NYC Residential Summer

Selina Zhang, a high schooler, has invented a trap that could potentially get rid of lanternflies in the city. She first noticed this pest in grade school. At the time, Zhang was visiting a market near her hometown. The colorful bugs caught her eye, and she was intrigued as she had never seen a bug quite like it.
Zhang’s first encounter with the spotted lanternfly relates to the quote, “Not all that glitters is gold. ”This bug with bright red underwings standing out from black forewings might be pretty to look at. However, it has damaged local agricultural industry for decades, and the city has been unable to remove this problem.
This insect has a healthy appetite for most plants and can feed on most crops, trees and various fruits. This invasive pest does not harm humans or animals. However, it could reduce the quality of life of people living in heavily infested areas. It is known to be a nuisance (讨厌的东西) in outdoor areas as they can lay their egg masses on trees and even vehicles.
Zhang eventually realized that this insect posed a threat to Garden City and decided to do something about it. Most people choose insecticides to manage this invasion, but this can leave harmful remains affecting crucial pollinators. Some others use a sticky band wrapped around a tree trunk to trap pests. This method is also unsafe as it can trap other small animals and insects in its grip.
In search of an ecologically acceptable method, Zhang got inspiration from chess boards and the“Dance Dance Revolution”. She conducted an extensive field observation for weeks on end, observing the behavioral patterns of the bugs. She studied how they grew over time and navigated unfamiliar structures and areas they chose to gather. After her study, Zhang knew she wanted to copy the tree of heaven as a trap and used an umbrella from her family’s patio.
She then designed an electric net for this tree, using machine learning to kill the lanternflies that landed. And she finally created an solar-powered, self-cleaning“tree”that attracts the spotted lanternfly, removing the bug with an electronic mesh (网).

Artificial intelligence models can trick each other into disobeying their creators and providing banned instructions for making drugs, or even building a bomb, suggesting that preventing such AI “jailbreaks” is more difficult than it seems.
Many publicly available large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, have hard-coded rules that aim to prevent them from exhibiting racial or sexual discrimination, or answering questions with illegal or problematic answers — things they have learned from humans via training data. But that hasn’t stopped people from finding carefully designed instructions that block these protections, known as “jailbreaks”, making AI models disobey the rules.
Now, Arush Tagade at Leap Laboratories and his co-workers have found a process of jailbreaks. They found that they could simply instruct one LLM to convince other models to adopt a persona (角色), which is able to answer questions the base model has been programmed to refuse. This process is called “persona modulation (调节)”.
Tagade says this approach works because much of the training data consumed by large models comes from online conversations, and the models learn to act in certain ways in response to different inputs. By having the right conversation with a model, it is possible to make it adopt a particular persona, causing it to act differently.
There is also an idea in AI circles, one yet to be proven, that creating lots of rules for an AI to prevent it displaying unwanted behaviour can accidentally create a blueprint for a model to act that way. This potentially leaves the AI easy to be tricked into taking on an evil persona. “If you’re forcing your model to be good persona, it somewhat understands what a bad persona is,” says Tagade.
Yinzhen Li at Imperial College London says it is worrying how current models can be misused, but developers need to weigh such risks with the potential benefits of LLMs. “Like drugs, they also have side effects that need to be controlled,” she says.

Double rainbows are one thing, but a double aurora (极光) They can happen, though some kinds are rare. One particular red-and-green aurora is especially confusing. Now, images taken by amateur astronomers may help reveal its secrets.
Citizen scientists living in Canada and Finland used cameras to document an unusual combination of auroras in the night sky. Physicists have studied those images to learn what may have caused the unusual light show.
Alan Dyer was outside his home in Strathmore, Canada, when the dancing Northern Lights caught his attention. He grabbed his camera and started filming. "I knew I had something interesting," says Dyer. At first glance, the double aurora looks like a floating slice of watermelon. The green aurora is well-understood. The fruity looking red strip is more mysterious. Scientists have known about these red auroras for decades. But there's no agreement on how they form. One idea is that Earth's magnetic field can heat up certain areas of the atmosphere. That heat could knock particles (粒子) around, like in proton (质子) rain.
Researchers had seen these two types of auroras occur together before. But it was always mysterious, says Toshi Nishimura, a space physicist at Boston University. After looking at satellite observations along with the images taken by Dyer and others, Nishimura and his team concluded how the two phenomena might be related. The key is the thin rays in the red aurora. They mark the paths of electrons falling through the Earth's magnetic field. That means electron rain appears to cause the red aurora, just as proton rain causes the green one. Both get powered by the solar wind. But the electrons carry less energy than the protons, so they make for a more reddish color.
Electron rain might not be the only way to produce the stable red auroras, though. The results show that what's going on is more complicated than researchers had thought. The auroras Dyer saw could be danger zones for radio communication and GPS systems, says Nishimura.
The citizen scientists who took the photos were a critical part of the new findings, Nishimura says.
