With two Olympic medals and two world skateboarding titles, 16-year-old Rayssa Leal has achieved what most people dream of. Turning 18 is a big deal when you are a teenager. It means you are responsible for yourself and don’t need your parents’ permission any more. However, there are lots of opinions about when one becomes an adult. Some are based on science, while others are personal opinions. While at present the age is 18, science supports 25 as a more reasonable age for adulthood, and I agree.
While studying the brain of teenagers, scientists have learned that when kids are around 18, their prefrontal cortex (前额皮层) is only halfway developed. The prefrontal cortex helps people set and achieve goals by receiving signals from different regions of the brain to process information and changing accordingly. That halfway development means that you still have things to learn and your brains still have time to develop until the age of 25.
Some people think going off to college and living on your own qualify (使……具有资格) you as an adult, while others may believe having a secure income and being able to afford to live on your own are what make you an adult. Not everyone has a fortunate life where they have family that can provide support; there are situations where you are forced to become an “adult” whether you like it or not.
In the foster care (寄养) system, once a child turns 18, he or she is considered an adult and can no longer receive state-funded support. These children are forced into a life where they have no family or anyone to support them other than those who were there for them in the system.
Having a quality job will allow you to supply yourself with necessary things to live and help you become a more grown-up and responsible person. Also, going through difficult times and realizing life isn’t as easy as it seems should qualify someone as an adult.

American consumers are projected to spend roughly $960 billion this holiday season. But retailers (零售商) expect returns to make up almost 20 percent of those sales. “That return wave appears mainly because people tend to make a lot of mistakes when giving presents,” says Julian Givi, a marketing expert and psychologist who has been studying gifting practices.
Giving good gifts may not seem like a research-worthy topic. But positive gift exchanges can help businesses struggling to deal with a flood of returns as well as improve social relationships. Most importantly, giving better gifts could take pressure off the environment. According to one report, in 2020, some 2.6 million tons of returned products in the United States ended up in a landfill (垃圾填埋场).
Most of these studies were also done in the U.S. and U.K. The studies centered on the cultural factor. For example, we often give the gifts around the holidays. But what we find is that recipients (接受者) actually prefer meaningful gifts more than what givers expect. But if in a culture where you are going to get laughed at for giving a meaningful gift, then I would say you won’t give a similar gift. However, the limitation on this body of research work is that it’s focused on adults. It’s a lot easier to get permission to do research on people who are 18 and older.
Gift givers tend to focus on that “aha” moment, the moment when the outer packaging of the gift is opened. Recipients focus more on long-term functions. Research shows that people are misguided on how much surprise is important. However, recipients actually like things that they request better.
It had been thought that gift givers simply had a thirst to please recipients. Actually, people often give gifts that satisfy their own demands rather than the demands of recipients. In other words, people would be a whole lot better at giving gifts if they could just get their sense of their own worth out of the way. Therefore, a better gift giver should take what recipients really want into consideration.
