Appian Way
If all roads lead to Rome, this ancient highway built 2,300 years ago is the mother of them all. Stretching for 360 miles from the heart of Italy’s capital to the seaport of Brindisi on the Adriatic, the ancient road, which symbolizes the ups and downs of the Roman Empire, has been rebuilt for modern travelers, with stops at scenic villages and historical sites.

Starting to be built in the second century, Hadrian’s Wall once marked the rule of the Roman Empire in the UK. Things have changed over the past two thousand years. Gustavo Dudamel comes back for another show. It’s the first night for the Los Angeles Philharmonic in California. When people see the conductor, the noise inside the Walt Disney Concert Hall gets louder. Dudamel walks to the stage and raises his head and arms. The group starts playing the Star Wars theme. At the end, people all jump up. It’s the kind of response you’d see at a concert by Taylor Swift, a very popular pop singer.
Dudamel says later that music is not just for fun. It brings us together even if we come in feeling very different. Under Dudamel’s leadership, the Los Angeles Philharmonic has spread the uniting power of music across differences in money, class, color and age. And its Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) has worked with more than 1,500 kids, giving them instruments and lessons so they can perform.
Dudamel grew up in a working- class family in Venezuela. His mom was a singing teacher. His dad played in a band. But what was more important for Dudamel’s musical growth was El Sistema, Venezuela’s national classical music education and performance program for poor kids. Dudamel joined when he was 5. It was El Sistema that gave him a violin three years later.
The YOLA program started in 2007, after Dudamel showed El Sistema’s work in Venezuela to members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic organization. The roots (根) Dudamel put down in Los Angeles have spread far beyond Disney Hall. In October 2021, the Beckmen YOLA Center opened its doors in Inglewood, California. The former bank building had been turned into a place for lessons, recording and performance.
Dudamel remembers someone once said: The young musicians shouldn’t be satisfied with a program that is just “good enough”. They should be given the best instruments, the best teachers, and the most inspiring places to grow and do well.

Coolness is not a widely studied subject. Past research has found that coolness is usually considered something positive: Cool people enjoy taking risks and doing extreme things and they are usually fashionable and attractive.
But Dr. Warren and his team want to know what makes a person “good” rather than just “cool”. So they asked the participants in an experiment to think about the people they considered good or cool. Then they were asked to match each person with 15 different qualities.
“We found that the good and cool people do share some qualities. For example, those who appear agreeable are equally considered cool and good,” Dr. Warren said. “But, across the board, the qualities that are usually related to kindness or helpfulness are more often associated with good people instead of cool pared with cool ones, good people seem to be warmer, more helpful and traditional. They usually work harder and see everyone and everything as being equal or equally worthy of care and respect.”
Their finding further suggests that the drive to be cool is particularly strong during teenage, and it influences not only what people buy or whom they admire but also how they talk and what they do for fun.

“I have serious doubts,” Dr. Warren said. “Sure, cool kids get more attention in school, but many of them who continue behaving in this way in adulthood would struggle. For example, they are very likely to develop problems with drugs and relationships. Though coolness may offer popularity during youth, it is how good you are that contributes to long-term success. Even the most uncool kid will probably do well if they have at least some close friends.”

The value of heritage lies in its two-sided nature. Historical sites remind people of shared memories, while traditions carry a group’s values. The Great Wall is a typical example. Over 20, 000 kilometers long, less than one-tenth of its Ming Dynasty part remains due to weather and human damage. Yet it is more than an old wall — it stands for the strong will and teamwork of ancient Chinese people. Another example is the Forbidden City, home to plenty of treasures. Though crowded with visitors, it is better protected with new approaches like digital records and careful repairs. Its creative products mix old patterns with modern designs, showing how traditions fit into today’s life.
However, threats exist. Rapid development often puts economic gains first, leading to the neglect(忽视) or destruction of some heritages. Natural disasters also bring risks.
