What is the most difficult part of high school Making friends, taking tests, or growing up The answer could be any of these things. But for many students, the hardest thing is waking up early in the morning.
During their teenage (青少年时期的) years, young people’s bodies go through many changes. One important change is that they naturally (自然地) fall asleep later at night. This is not because they want to stay up late—it is part of their growth. Because of this, getting up early for school becomes very hard. When students do not get enough good sleep, their health can suffer (变糟). They may feel tired, find it hard to pay attention in class, or even feel sad more often.
A new study shows that having flexible (灵活的) school start times may help students get more sleep and do better in school. The study looked at a high school in Switzerland. In 2022, the school began letting students choose their own start time. Students could choose to start at 7: 30 am—just 10 minutes later than before—or at 8: 30 am.
Most students chose the later time. As a result (结果), they got about 45 more minutes of sleep on school days. They reported fewer sleep problems, better health, and improved grades in English and maths. Getting more sleep helped them feel more awake in class and more ready to learn.
According to the findings of the study, starting school later can really improve teenagers’ health. When students sleep better, they feel better—both in body and mind.

There are different kinds of sports. Some are non-contact (非接触) sports, such as tennis and swimming. Others are contact sports, such as football and basketball. Some believe kids should not play contact sports. Others think the benefits are greater than the risks (风险). We asked some kids for their thoughts.
Nancy, 13
Kids should be able to play contact sports. If we limit (限制) their choices, they might lose interest in playing sports. Almost all sports have a risk of injury (损伤). Football is a contact sport, but the risk of getting a serious injury is actually quite low.
Lincoln, 13
Kids should not play any type of contact sport. Contact sports are dangerous, even for adults. If adults can get hurt, children can get hurt more easily. Some kids may get badly hurt from contact sports. Also, some parents push kids too hard. This can take all the fun out of sports.
Julian, 14
Almost all sports have some contact. Contact sports might come with risks, but they teach us about teamwork. This helps build communication skills. Contact sports also help kids learn about competition and sportsmanship (竞争和体育精神).
Mary, 13
Kids should not play contact sports until they’re older. Their bones and muscles (肌肉) are still growing. Hard hits can cause serious injuries. These injuries may last their whole life. Children can still have fun by swimming, running, or playing tennis. When they grow bigger, they can try contact sports more safely.
24. Which of the following is a non-contact sport
A.Football. B.Basketball. C.Swimming. D.Boxing.

“Just look at what you’re eating for breakfast,” said his mum.
Ethan looked at the food in front of him and felt good. “I’m having juice, cereal (麦片), and a donut (甜甜圈),” he said. Then, he took a bite of his donut. He chewed (咀嚼), but suddenly stopped as a sharp pain (痛) shot through his teeth. “Ow!” he cried, and held the right side of his face.
“Ethan, you have to go to the dentist (看牙医).”
“No, I won’t! It’s the most terrifying thing,” Ethan said. He took another bite, but his teeth were really painful.
“Why do all the delicious foods have to be bad for me ” he asked.
“Your favourite foods are full of sugar and fat. You need good food for healthy teeth, eyes, and even your brain!” she explained. “If you don’t choose healthier food, I won’t buy any fast food or sweets.”
“That’s not fair!” Ethan said.
His mother grew more serious. “Tomorrow morning you’ll have eggs, toast without jam (不加果酱的吐司), bacon (培根), some fresh fruit, and a glass of milk.”
“No sweets at all ” Ethan asked in shock.
“No. And no sweets in your lunch either. You’ll have yogurt or fresh fruit for dessert.”
