Gwendolyn Brooks was the first African American to win a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Gwendolyn Brooks wrote hundreds of poems during her lifetime. She was known around the world for using poetry to increase understanding about black culture in America.
Her poems described conditions in the black community. She also wrote poems about the struggles of black women. But her skill was more than her ability to write about struggling black people. She was an expert at the language of poetry. She combined traditional European poetry styles with the African American experience.
In her early poetry, Gwendolyn Brooks wrote about the South Side of Chicago, where many black people live. In her poems, the South Side is called Bronzeville. It was A Street in Bronzeville that gained the attention of literary experts in 1945. Critics praised her poetic skill and her powerful descriptions of the black experience during the time. The Bronzeville poems were her first published collection.
In 1950, Gwendolyn Brooks won Pulitzer Prize for her second book of poems called Annie Allen. Annie Allen is `a collection of poetry about the life of a Bronzeville girl as a daughter, a wife and mother. She experiences loneliness, loss, death and being poor. Ms. Brooks said that winning the prize changed her life.
Her next work was a novel written in 1953 called Maud Martha, which received little notice when it was first published. But now it is considered an important work by some critics. Its main ideas about the difficult life of many women are popular among female writers today.
In some of her poems, Gwendolyn Brooks described how what people see in life is affected by who they are. One example is this poem, Corners on the Curing Sky.
By the end of the 1960s, Gwendolyn Brooks’s poetry expanded from the everyday experiences of people in Bronzeville. She wrote about a wider world and dealt with important political issues.

Every spring, about two billion birds fly through Texas. However, light pollution in urban areas can be deadly for many migratory (迁徙的) species.
The experts from the Texas Conservation Alliance, who ran the Lights Out program in 2020, convinced downtown businesses and residents to switch off unnecessary lighting from 11 p. m. to 6 a. m. during spring and autumn, reducing light pollution that is otherwise misleading to birds.
As of October 31 of 2024, the team recorded 42 bird deaths, down from the 110 deaths documented in the fall of 2023. This is partly due to the support of downtown building owners who have agreed to turn off lights overnight after joining the Lights Out program in 2021.
In addition to making the very simple switch, Lights Out teaches city officials and other involved parties how to decrease light pollution and save urban wildlife. The Alliance has also developed a way to forecast bird migration during specific times and in specific locations, helping residents and businesses predict when birds may pass so they can activate the Lights Out program more accurately.
And it’s not just a win for the birds, but for everyone who shares an ecosystem with them. Birds are good signs of ecosystem health. Plus, birds look and sound really cool and have interesting behaviors.
Bird lovers can do their part, too. The Lights Out program, for instance, has started using dBird, a website where residents can report cases of dead and injured birds, which helps experts target their efforts.
“We’re only one team. We can’t collect all the data on the building strikes. We know there is more happening,” director Mei Ling Liu told a reporter. “So spreading the word that anyone can report a bird strike and help us collect this data is what we’ re trying to do with this website.”
12. What does paragraph 3 tell us about the Lights Out program
A. It raised awareness of conservation. B. It aimed to reduce electricity waste.
C. It helped decrease the deaths of birds. D. It became popular among the country.
13. What is the purpose of paragraph 5
A. To explore ways of conservation. B. To recognize the importance of birds.
C. To confirm the function of ecosystem. D. To assess the effectiveness of the program
14. What is the significance of dBird
A. It tracks the reported birds. B. It brings bird enthusiasts together.
C. It increases the number of birds. D. It allows bird lovers to contribute.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Go Dark to Save Birds B. Lead the Birds Home
C. Rescue the Dying Birds D. Turn Off Lights for Future

That person was a young man in his twenties. After eating, he went to the restroom leaving his iPad on the table. Five minutes later, he came out talking on the cellphone with someone and hurriedly walked out of the cafe without looking back.
Ella saw the iPad on the table. She quickly told Mark, “Mark, the man left behind his iPad.” Mark looked at the iPad. It took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. Mark had always wanted an iPad. But his parents had told him, “You have a cellphone and you need to focus on your study. No need, to have an iPad.” He stared at it for some minutes. Then he said slowly, pausing on every word, “I want to take the iPad.” Ella could not believe her ears. She merely stared at her brother. “You can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it ”
Having made the decision, Mark quickly grabbed the iPad and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Ella’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly.
Once back home, Mark rushed to his bedroom. Inside his room, he couldn’t wait to take out the piece of beauty from the bag. Oh, he liked it so much. He had his dream iPad for free. Soon, he was polishing it happily. But Ella came in, telling him, “Mark, you cannot keep the iPad. What will you tell Father about this He will ask you how you got the iPad.” Mark said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.” Ella said, “Now you are lying. Oh dear! When have you turned so dishonest ”
Then Ella noticed a phone number on the back of the iPad. “This may be the man’s phone number. Why don’t we just call this number He must be worried and sad about losing his iPad. We will talk to him and ask him to come and take it back.” She was trying to talk some sense into him.

What’s more, that remember to keep the light off when we leave the room is also a must. It can not only save energy but also save our pockets. Above all, the awareness of saving energy is vital to everyone and the earth. So reminding people around us of saving energy and developing a good habit play a role in protecting our planet.

When he thought how worried and sad the young man would be at the loss of his iPad, he was full of guilt and shame. After a long and restless night, the next morning, he was determined to return the iPad to the owner. After school, he told Ella, “You’re right. I can’t keep it for my own. I am going to phone the owner.”
Ella was very happy to hear that. Back home, they immediately dialed the number on the back. A young man answered the phone. Mark asked, “Have you lost an iPad I’m Mark. I found your iPad. Can you come and get it ” “Yes!” the man replied excitedly. Then he expressed his gratitude repeatedly. Ten minutes later, he was at the same cafe to meet Mark and Ella. Handing back the iPad to him and seeing his smile, Mark felt relieved and happy about his final decision. Because he also found back something precious that he had almost lost and realized that honesty was indeed the best policy.
