Dam Ojo, a master of macrophotography, specializes in extreme close-up shots that show the odd beauty of tiny creatures. Surprisingly, he used to be scared of spiders and other small creatures. But now Ojo is willing to approach these tiny beings, and he also actively protects them through his work.
Ojo’s first encounter with photography began in childhood, when he started shooting animals with his father’s Nikon camera. This experience planted the seed for his career. Later, while teaching in China, he began photographing insects to fight boredom. But there was a more important reason: he noticed there were hardly any attractive shots of small creatures among animal photos on the Internet. He determined to fill this gap.
After professional training, Ojo created his first macro image of a dragonfly in 2020. Two years later, his photo of a special beetle, whose tiny details were on full display, received over a million views. He has photographed over 210 species of small creatures. Among them the state of bees worries him the most. “Bees are rare and really endangered even though they are essential to us,” Ojo says. His work Insect Apocalypse focuses on the decline of insects and its threats to the ecosystem and human existence.
Ojo’s works have also caught the attention of the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina and she has shared some of Ojo’s works to mark the 2023 World Biodiversity Day, highlighting their role in protection awareness.
But the approval also offers certain pressures. “Now that eyes of the entire world are on me, I have to keep the bar higher than the last, each time I shoot,” he says.
“I use my images to reveal the beauty of insects and other small creatures,” he says. “This way I can draw people in and share a conservation message. When people are blown away by the pictures, they will become curious, develop empathy and then take action.”

My child’s experience is not unique. Developmental psychologist Susan Engel notes that curiosity defined as “spontaneous (自发的)” investigation and eagerness for new information-drops dramatically in children by the fourth grade.
In Wonder: Childhood and the Lifelong Love of Science, Yale psychologist Frank C. Keil details the development of wonder — a spontaneous passion to explore, discover, and understand. He takes us on a journey from its early development, when wonder drives common sense and scientific reasoning, through the drop-off in wonder that often occurs, to the trap of life in a society that devalues wonder.
As Keil notes, children are particularly rich in wonder while they are rapidly developing causal mechanisms (因果机制) in the preschool and early elementary school years. They are sensitive to the others’ knowledge and goals, and they expertly use their desire for questioning. Children’s questions, particularly those about “why” and “how” support the development of causal mechanisms which can be used to help their day-to-day reasoning.
Unfortunately, as Keil notes, “adults greatly underestimate young children’s causal mechanisms.” In the book, Wonder, Keil shows that we can support children’s ongoing wonder by playing games with them as partners, encouraging question-asking, and focusing on their abilities to reason and conclude.
A decline in wonder is not unavoidable. Keil reminds us that we can accept wonder as a desirable positive quality that exists in everyone. I value wonder deeply, and Wonder has given me hope by proposing a future for my children that will remain wonder-full.

For parents, dealing with school schedules can be a nightmare: half-days, days off, and vacation. It imposes (强加) a burden so great that they simply cannot be the caretakers or workers they want to be. It’s hard to imagine any working parent who would be able to handle regular 3 p.m. school dismissals, along with frequent half-days and full days off. After all, how many parents get more than 10 weeks of vacation each year How many struggle to afford camps
However, even if we should be moving in the direction of more time spent at schools, don’t hold your breath. Increasingly, public school systems are embracing four-day weeks. Of course, many of the cuts are born of financial necessity. But we’ve failed to recognize how something as basic as school schedules dramatically disadvantages working parents, along with those who can’t afford the mountain of out-of-school costs these schedules impose. It has always been surprising to Ulrich Boser, an expert on learning, that politicians don’t even raise the topic of school schedules. Working 9 to 5 really resonates with individuals, he says. And yet, “It’s not like we’ve seen any presidential candidates run on school being nine to five.”
The change we want is difficult to carry out. Some parents — particularly, affluent parents — strongly resist changes to school calendars, especially if they want to sign their children up for certain after-school activities or camps, or if they’ve got vacation plans. And then there’s the business community. Restaurants, ice cream parlors, and hotels all depend on high school students as employees. All of this makes it more challenging to increase the amount of time students spend in schools.
Though few politicians care about it, there are enormous advantages to adopting a school schedule that looks a little more like a work schedule. Change could come gradually. In a city,you could imagine creating just one year-round elementary school. Being a student there would be purely voluntary. Teachers who opt in would get paid more for their additional work. We would start small, and see if children and adults embraced the advantages.
