The risk of children and young people (CYP) being exposed to and experiencing fraud (诈骗) is considerably growing compared to elderly people as the internet increasingly becomes part of their daily lives. Here’s a report revealing fraud against CYP in 2025 in England and Wales.
Scale of fraud
70% of CYP aged 13-21 were targeted by fraud in the last year. Nearly a third of CYP have been a victim of fraud. Only 1% of CYP have never encountered fraud. Some CYP are more likely to experience fraud victimization, including older CYP (aged 18-21) and CYP with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
Methods used by fraudsters
* A message from a stranger asking for your personal details: 30%
* A spam email or other online message with a suspicious link: 24%
* Pop-up window asking you to click on a suspicious link: 24%
* Someone pretending to be your friend or family member: 20%
* A message from a stranger asking for your bank account details or for money: 18%
Action plan
The findings of this report have been used to inform an action plan which sets out how key authorities can help prevent fraud experienced by CYP, minimize its impact and improve their understanding of what fraud is and how it may present.
Actors
Actions
Government, Home Office, DfE
The Home Office/ Department for Education (DfE) should produce a separate strategy meant for CYP.
DfE, child protection experts
Existing networks such as the Joint Fraud Taskforce should include child protection experts and a DfE representative.
Social media companies, banks
Private sector actors are encouraged to tackle fraud against CYP, for example the Online Safety Act should be updated to require social media companies to protect children from fraudulent content.
21. What can we learn about CYP fraud from the scale data
A.Disabled CYP are free from fraud attacks.
B.Most CYP have never met fraud-related tricks.
C.Almost all CYP have come across fraud matters.
D.Young teens face higher fraud risk than 18-21-year-olds.
22. What do the fraud methods have in common
A.They involve identity theft.
B.They are conducted remotely.
C.They are carried out by friends.
D.They lead to investment losses.
23. What are private sectors expected to do to protect CYP
A.Add experts into existing working groups.
B.Draw up independent national safety rules.
C.Update related laws to block fraudulent content.
D.Stop young people from using online platforms.

One quiet summer afternoon, Max and his sister Morvenna lay beside a sandy pit (坑) where an ant-lion hid. A small ant was struggling to climb the slippery slope and escape. Morvenna tried to save it with a twig (细枝). However, out of childish curiosity, Max blew hard into the pit, sending it sliding back. The ant-lion immediately caught the ant and disappeared into the sand. He sent two more down. The scene repeated itself.
The children fell into awkward silence.
“They’re too little.” Max said. “I’ll get a meat-ant and see what he does.”
“Oh no! If you do, I’ll kill the lion,” Morvenna begged and threatened anxiously, yet unconsciously searching for the meat-ant’s nearby track.
Max fetched a fierce red meat-ant and sent him down, eager to witness a thrilling hunt. Filled with fear, Morvenna covered her eyes but soon peeked (偷看) out of uncontrollable curiosity. The strong ant fought fiercely and nearly escaped, time and again, but Max pushed it back repeatedly. “Let’s see some sport,” he murmured softly.
The battle swung.
A pigeon hopped nearby, other ants ran quietly about their business, the stream ran peacefully over the rocks, and the creatures inside the pit struggled silently.
Finally, the ant-lion seized its prey by one leg. The ant struggle desperately, his free legs kicking wildly. It grew weaker and slower, and the ant-lion bit hard into its belly, swiftly and fiercely. Now the ant fell. All was over, his waist nearly split in two. He lay there, helpless and motionless. How quickly, how cruelly, the ant-lion pulled him down, avoiding the last kicks of those thin useless legs and hiding him in the sand, where the other ants lay. The creature seemed like a little machine. He sent a shudder (寒战) through Morvenna.
Max sat up slowly. His eyes reddened, hands trembling.
“Are you going to put in another ” Morvenna asked. She half-hoped, half-feared it.
“No,” Max said. He stood up, not looking at the pit or at Morvenna. “Enough’s enough.” Then he broke into a run and stopped, far from the pit.

Plants can detect potential dangers by means of smell. However, their ability to recognize threats varies. New research indicates that young leaves of corn plants are far more sensitive to danger signals than mature ones.
Lei Wang, a plant biologist at the University of Bern in Switzerland, explains that plants can sense approaching risks and activate their defense systems in advance. He and his colleagues published the new findings in Current Biology.
Many plants strengthen their chemical defenses when facing insect attacks. One important way for plants to perceive threats is through scent (气味). They are capable of detecting scent molecules (分子) in the air, which may come from insects’ saliva (口水) or nearby damaged plants.
Nevertheless, scientists have not yet clarified which parts of plants are responsible for detecting dangers, as plants have no noses. They also know little about the internal mechanism by which plants process danger signals. Wang’s team intended to explore this warning system in corn. However, they ran into an unexpected obstacle early on: when exposed to threat-related scents, fully grown corn leaves showed almost no detectable response.
The researchers then focused on young leaves instead. Lab experiments showed that young corn leaves performed much better in sensing dangers than older ones, with a stronger reaction to a typical danger-signaling scent, which smells like freshly cut grass. The reason is still unclear. Being in the early growth stage, young leaves need extra defense, so it may be a natural protection for these more susceptible young leaves. Besides, young leaves, usually growing at the top of plants, might be more exposed to scents carried over long distances. These assumptions require further study.
Wang hopes his research will contribute to the breeding of insect-resistant crops, which will gradually reduce the use of poisonous pesticides in agriculture. “My parents are farmers,” Wang says. “This research is not just to satisfy curiosity. I truly expect to solve some practical agricultural problems.”
28. What is special about young corn leaves according to the new research
A.They give off warning scents.
B.They grow faster than mature leaves.
C.They react better to danger signals.
D.They attract insects from long distances.
29. What problem did Wang’s team meet at first
A.Corn plants failed to grow well.
B.Insects’ saliva damaged the young leaves.
C.Danger-related scents were hard to detect.
D.Mature leaves reacted little to warning smells.
30. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “susceptible” in paragraph 5
A.Slow to grow.
B.Hard to reach.
C.Easily harmed.
D.Quickly recovered.
31. What does Wang expect from this research
A.It may explain corn’s faster growth.
B.It may reveal how plants process signals.
C.It may lead to greener crop protection.
D.It may make pesticide use more efficient.

Many popular programs promise to increase happiness, but they often require more time and effort than busy people can manage. As a result, most of us find it hard to stick to such demanding routines. This raises an important question: what if becoming happier did not call for a complete change in lifestyle What if it could start with simple, brief actions that are easy to carry out
To explore the possibility, researchers launched a global online study known as the Big Joy Project, where a large number of participants were asked to complete a daily “micro-act” — a short, easy activity designed to build joy. These acts included listing things they felt grateful for, performing an act of kindness, or watching an inspiring video. Each day, people reported how they felt both before and after the activity, which allowed researchers to track changes in their emotions.
The results, based on data from participants from more than 200 countries and regions, showed encouraging changes. After only one week, most people reported noticeable improvements: they experienced more positive feelings, less stress, and even better sleep and physical health. Moreover, the study showed a direct connection between effort and outcome — the more micro-acts a person completed, the greater their increase in happiness turned out to be.
Interestingly, these benefits reached everyone, including those facing adversities in life. People with fewer resources or lower social status often reported an even stronger sense of well-being. The project also succeeded in promoting “prosocial” behavior (亲社会行为) — the natural desire to help others and connect with the community. In particular, groups that initially showed less prosocial tendency, such as those in less wealthy regions, demonstrated the most significant growth in this respect.
The study suggests that happiness does not necessarily depend on major achievements or external events. Instead, small but intentional acts — such as giving thanks, offering kindness, or taking a moment to appreciate the world — can help individuals actively shape their own emotional well-being. In today’s fast-paced world, these micro-moments of joy provide a practical and powerful way to help people feel lighter, more connected and more satisfied with life.
32. Why was the Big Joy Project launched
A.To compare different acts of kindness.
B.To seek an easier way to enhance happiness.
C.To test popular long-term happiness programs.
D.To promote major changes in people’s lifestyles.
33. What can we learn about the study results
A.Small acts made a difference.
B.Happier people did more micro-acts.
C.Prosocial growth centered on rich regions.
D.Higher status contributed to stronger gains.
34. What is the main function of paragraph 4
A.To present further findings.
B.To detail the research process.
C.To draw the core conclusion.
D.To offer practical suggestions.
35. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage
A.Prosocial Behavior: A Path to Happiness
B.Micro-Acts: Small Steps to Greater Happiness
C.Big Joy Project: A Strategy for Lifelong Happiness
D.Happiness: From Major Achievements to Daily Life

六、书面表达
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My father works as a taxi driver. Every single day, he drives along the busy urban streets, picking up and dropping off various passengers. The job is tiring and barely well-paid, yet he never utters a single complaint. Instead, he always returns home with a weary smile and small jokes to brighten up the whole family. “A passenger tipped me with a half-eaten apple today!” he would joke, bringing laughter to my mother and me.
Back in fifth grade, I handmade a sunflower keychain for him. It looked rough with faded paint. Nevertheless, Father cherished it deeply. He fastened it to his waist belt and took it wherever he went. As years rolled by, the keychain grew worn and nearly lost all its color, yet it still hung on his belt, swaying gently with every step he took.
Currently a high schooler, I am constantly buried in piles of homework and exams. Last week, I suffered a terrible failure in my math exam, leaving me feeling extremely defeated. Upon arriving home, I threw my schoolbag aside and sank into silence. Father instantly spotted my low spirits and asked softly what had happened. Refusing to reply, I felt annoyed at his repeated comfort offers. The accumulated frustration and embarrassment finally exploded. “Leave me alone!” I shouted rudely at him.
My harsh words hung awkwardly in the room. Father froze on the spot, his smile fading away completely. For a brief moment, he stared at me in shock and hurt, confused by my sudden outburst. Without any explanation, he turned around and walked slowly to his bedroom. The soft click of the closing door stung my heart far more fiercely than a loud slam.
That night, I tossed and turned in bed, consumed by great guilt. I quietly stepped out of my room and walked to the living room. There lay his belt on the sofa, with the faded sunflower keychain resting on it, silently reminding me of my foolishness.

Paragraph 1 I was shocked at my own rudeness. Staring at the shabby sunflower keychain, memories flooded back. I recalled how delighted Father was when receiving my gift and how he carried it everywhere. Realizing how deeply I had hurt him, tears blurred my eyes. I decided to apologize sincerely for my bad temper.
Paragraph 2 I knocked at the door and it opened. Father looked tired, yet there was no anger on his face. I apologized repeatedly and admitted that I shouldn’t have vented my negative feelings on him. Father smiled softly and patted my shoulder. He told me he understood my pressure. From then on, I learned to control my emotions and treasure every warm moment with my father.
