Jake Morrison, a high school teacher in a small town in Oregon, US, once knew little about community gardening — save for seeing his grandma tending tomato plants in her backyard. It wasn’t until his niece Zara got addicted to electronic devices that he resolved to take action. He introduced kids like Zara to gardening, and that’s how they first got involved in the Springdale Kids’ Garden program, a local initiative launched in 2005.

Thanks to his backing, over 80 kids participate free of charge each summer for 4 weeks. To fund the project, he spent his after-school hours collecting used plastic bottles and old newspapers from the neighborhood, carefully cleaning and sorting them before selling the recyclables to a nearby firm. “At first, the residents questioned my motives, assuming I was doing this just to make a profit, but now even people I don’t know stop by to drop off their recyclables at my door,” he shared. This recycling effort generates about $15,000 each year, which covers all the garden’s needs.
Jake says that watching the kids’ excitement when picking their first carrots or tomatoes brings him great contentment. “Not only is less waste ending up in landfills, but we’ve got kids who prefer digging in soil over looking through phones,” he added.

In 2017, when making a video over Shitizhai, a village located on the eastern side of the Gaoligong Mountains, Wang Dayong saw the once-barren mountain is now abundant in rows of carefully planted coffee trees together with towering native species.
Yunnan’s high-altitude regions, along with its unique climate conditions, proved to be perfect for cultivating coffee. The mountains rise like a wall, blocking the moist air currents. This natural barrier gives rise to an extraordinary microclimate, which is marked by dramatic temperature differences between day and night, making it ideal for growing coffee.
Wang came to this mountainous area a few years ago for a business trip and engaged with the locals. That’s how he learned about the once-splendid coffee history of the area. Afterwards, he became motivated to make a documentary in 2017, tracing China’s coffee history and highlighting the unique Yunnan coffee and its reputation as “black gold” in the global market.
As he explored further, it pained him to see how the mountainside had suffered from excessive farming. In the race for profits, short-sighted farmers began tightly planting coffee plants together and increased the density from just 60 trees per tenth of a hectare to more than 330, resulting in poor quality of coffee beans. When the coffee market slumped, many locals cut down their decades-old coffee trees to make room for fruits and vegetables to survive.
Fortunately, Wang’s documentary caught the attention of local authorities. Moreover, he hosted a harvest festival, where he invited all the local growers to taste the coffee they’d planted. As a result, the sale of these beans quickly became a primary source of income for many in the village. Wu Hua, a cultural new economy professor at Shanghai University said, “A coffee industry that fell into decline is now regaining its strength.” Wu considered the work done by Wang as a new vision for rural revitalization.

Companies and institutes are currently working on biotechnological processes for the production of dairy (奶制的) products without the use of cows: In so-called precision fermentation (发酵), egg and milk proteins are produced with the help of bacteria or yeasts (酵母). This results in foods such as milk or cheese with a familiar flavour and texture.
Supporters hope that this will lead to more sustainable food production, as nutrient-rich proteins can be produced using fewer resources. But will consumers accept such products Researchers at the University of G ttingen have found that a large proportion of German consumers are willing to try and buy cheese produced in this way.
The study is based on a representative online survey with around 2,000 participants. The researchers analyzed how various aspects of information affect the acceptance of cheese produced in this way. They analyzed the potential opportunities and risks of the technology, including its relation to sustainability, impact on agriculture and product quality.
In general, information has only a minor influence on whether consumers would try or buy cheese from precision fermentation. Only the reference to the technological genetic modification (改变) of the materials required for the production process leads to a slightly significantly lower willingness to try the product.
Respondents were also confronted with the potential advantages and disadvantages of this technology. It was found that emphasising the consistently high quality of the products and advantages in terms of the environment and animal welfare in particular increased the willingness to try such cheese.
The situation is different when consumers are informed about possible risks, for example that farmers could lose their source of income due to the new technology or that large companies could exert too much power on the market. These aspects reduced the willingness to buy and pay for such cheese the most.
“Our study shows that consumers in Germany are open to cheese from precision fermentation if they are informed about the benefits and high quality of the product. However, it is important to design the communication carefully to address concerns about the impact on traditional agriculture,” explains first author Dr Sarah Kuhl, Chair for Marketing for Food and Agricultural Products at the University of G ttingen.
