The United Arab Emirates, 80% desert with only 0.7% farming land, struggles with food supply. Unsurprisingly, the oil-rich nation has offered opportunities to companies aiming to change those statistics, as it attempts to find its way toward food supply.
HyveGeo, launching a project with Cambridge, is the latest startup that has found a way to turn the desert green while turning a profit too. Using agricultural waste and algae (藻类), the company is creating a mixture designed to boost tree planting projects and food production. And through growing algae, it says it can remove climate-warming carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in the process.
The main substance for HyveGeo’s mixture is biochar, a carbon-rich material made by burning organic materials in a low-oxygen environment. HyveGeo is sourcing its organic material from local farms and agricultural waste, and processing it at a pilot site in Abu Dhabi. To date, the site has produced 200 tons of biochar, preventing 800 tons of waste from going to landfill. Biochar itself is fantastic, but if you stick it in desert sand, it doesn’t do that much. HyveGeo has applied algae to their solution. It puts algae through a “bio-processing concept” to get bioactive extracts (提取物), which can be added to biochar to promote plant growth. The company claims to speed up soil creation from years to less than a month.
Trials with tomatoes show promising results: plants are larger and can withstand higher temperatures, indicating the growing medium helps resist climate stress. Partnering with UAE agricultural authorities, HyveGeo aims to grow crops such as wheat, rice, and vegetables locally. Expert Dr. Marcella acknowledges their comprehensive soil-improvement strategy but warns of soil regeneration’s complexity and unknown irrigation (灌溉) needs.
Producing enough algae to meet demand and making HyveGeo’s model commercially practicable are just two challenges it faces. HyveGeo will announce its next round of venture capital funding. “Climate is a long-term thing,” added Welch, HyveGeo chief operations officer. “If we can do our bit to solve the challenge, that’s a wonderful thing.”

Researchers say new evidence suggests Mimas, the icy moon of Saturn (土星), likely has a large underground ocean. Researchers based their finding on data collected by the American space agency NASA’s Cassini spacecraft. Cassini observed Saturn and its more than 140 moons for more than 10 years before ending operations in 2017.
Researchers reported the data provided the best evidence yet of a hidden ocean about 20 to 30 kilometers beneath the frozen surface.
Mimas is a relatively small moon, about 400 kilometers wide. Researchers say Mimas doesn’t have formations (构造) on its surface found on other moons, which suggests the presence of underground water. These can include a broken surface as well as spring activity.
The amount of water thought to exist below the surface of Mimas would represent just 1.2 to 1.4 percent of Earth’s oceans. That is because the moon is very small.
However, Mimas does have a very large crater caused by a crash with a space object. The edges of it are raised very high. For this reason, the appearance of the moon has been compared to the fictional “Death Star” space station in the popular movie series Star Wars.
The researchers said the underground ocean appears to have formed recently in space terms, possibly between 5 and 15 million years ago. The ocean would likely have an overall temperature of around zero degrees Celsius. But the temperature at the seafloor might be much higher.
The water is in contact with the moon’s rocky center, which may create the right complex (复杂的) chemical conditions to support life. But the researchers noted that because the ocean is believed to be young, it might be a challenge for life’s development.
However, nobody knows how long life needs to appear from a suitable environment. The ocean on Mimas may offer a unique opportunity to explore the first stage of life’s development.

We love these plots in the novels we read but the principles of a good story offer much more than entertainment. Recent research shows that the narratives we tell ourselves about our lives can powerfully help us recover from stress. People who generate tales of struggling and turning over a new leaf from their own lives appear to have much better mental health. Professor Dan McAdams put forward this idea and discovered that whether someone can describe having had some control over events in their past is an important predictor of mental health. Another key theme involved is finding some kind of positive meaning after stressful events.
McAdams invited 14 and 15-year-olds to join in an experiment to write about their experiences of failure and success. Half of them were then given extra instructions to describe the ways they had made their success a reality and how the failure had changed them for the better. Eight weeks later, members of this group reported greater persistence and better grades in their schoolwork.
Exciting as these results are, some experts sound a few notes of caution. They worry that, hearing about the power of self-narratives, many people may feel they have to find a positive turning point in life. If they can’t, they could end up feeling guilty about having somehow “failed”.
Clearly, self-narratives aren’t the panacea. Nevertheless, if you hope for self-improvement, you can use the findings to good effect. By recognizing ourselves as the hero at the center of our own struggles, we can all become the author of our own destiny and change ourselves for the better.
