For most of my childhood, I had only one dream — to leave my small town and see the world. I grew up in a quiet village in southern China, where everyone knew each other and life moved at a slow, steady pace. By the time I was eighteen, I had a chance to be an exchange student in a small town in the United States, and I jumped at it.
My first month in the U.S. was a blur of new experiences. I stayed with a kind host family, attended a local high school, and tried to make sense of a culture that was very different from my own. I remember the first time my American host mother asked me, “How was your day ” and I had no idea what to say. In my family, we rarely shared our daily feelings in such a direct way. For thousands of years, people have looked at nature for inspiration. From bird wings inspiring airplanes to lotus leaves inspiring self-cleaning glass, the science of learning from nature is called biomimicry. Today, one of the most exciting examples of biomimicry is the development of bio-inspired spider silk.
Spider silk is one of the strongest natural materials known to science. It is five times stronger than steel of the same weight, and it can stretch up to five times its original length without breaking. Yet it is completely natural and breaks down safely in the environment. Scientists have long dreamed of using spider silk to make bulletproof vests, airplane parts, and even surgical thread.
The problem is that spiders are hard to farm. Unlike silkworms, which live peacefully together, spiders are territorial and often eat each other when kept in groups. So scientists cannot simply raise millions of spiders and collect their silk. For a long time, this made large-scale production of spider silk impossible.
Recently, however, scientists have found a clever way around this problem. They have studied the genes that spiders use to make silk and have placed these genes into other organisms, such as bacteria, yeast, and even goats. These modified organisms can then produce spider-silk proteins in large amounts. The proteins are collected and spun into fibers in the lab.
In 2024, a team of scientists in the United States created a new type of bio-inspired silk that is not only strong and stretchy, but also conducts electricity. This means it could be used in wearable electronics, such as smart watches and health sensors. “We are entering a new era of materials science,” said Dr. Emily Harper, who led the study. “Nature has already solved many problems; we just need to learn from it.”

Dolphins are often called the second-smartest animals on Earth, after humans. They live in the sea, but their behavior is surprisingly similar to ours in many ways. They play, they communicate, and they even seem to have names for each other.
In a recent study, scientists at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland recorded the calls of a group of bottlenose dolphins off the east coast of Scotland. They found that each dolphin had its own special whistle — a unique sound pattern that other dolphins used to call it. When a mother dolphin was separated from her calf, she would whistle the calf’s special sound, and the calf would answer with its own whistle. The scientists believe this is the first time that animals have been shown to use sounds like names.
Dolphins are also great problem-solvers. In laboratory tests, they have learned to understand symbol-based language. When a trainer shows them a picture of an object, such as a ball or a hoop, the dolphin can point its nose at the real object. This shows that dolphins can understand the idea of “symbols” — something that represents something else. Only a few animals, including great apes, have shown this ability.
