COMMUNITY READING PROGRAM
Help foster a love of reading among children in our neighborhood! The Community Reading Program brings together volunteers and young readers to create meaningful connections through books. We operate across three local libraries and two elementary schools, serving children aged 5 to 12 from diverse backgrounds.
WHAT WE DO
Volunteers serve as reading buddies, spending one-on-one time with children who need extra support. Each session lasts 45 minutes and includes shared reading, discussion, and fun literacy activities. We also organize monthly book clubs where children can explore stories together and develop critical thinking skills. During school holidays, we run special Reading Adventure events featuring storytelling, arts and crafts, and visits from local authors.
VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS
Volunteers aged 16 and over are welcome. Those under 18 must have the parent/guardian approval section signed. No teaching experience is required, but you should feel comfortable reading aloud and engaging with children. A required two-hour orientation (培训) session will be provided before your first visit. All volunteers must pass a standard background check.
TIME COMMITMENT
We ask volunteers to commit to at least one session per week for a minimum of eight weeks. Sessions are available on weekday afternoons (3:30 pm-5:00 pm) and Saturday mornings (9:00 am-12:00 pm).

Bertha Ngumbi, my mother, is one of the kindest women I know. However, when I was a child growing up in Kenya with my four siblings (兄弟姐妹), her kindness often annoyed us. Whenever visitors came to our home, whether relatives or strangers, expected or not, my mother would ask us to prepare and serve them black tea. If visitors arrived during lunch or dinner, she would invite them to eat with us, which meant less food for the family. As children, we felt unhappy and sometimes even complained about it.
My sister Faith especially disliked those moments when we had little firewood or when the wood was wet from rain, because making tea became difficult. My sisters and I even believed that some people took advantage of our mother’s generosity by appearing at mealtime.
Years later, after moving to the United States to live and teach, I began to see things differently. My mother’s kindness had deeply influenced me. Even when I struggled myself, I still tried to help relatives, friends, and even strangers. If unexpected visitors came to my house one day, I would warmly offer them tea and food, just as my mother always did.
Wanting to understand the source of her kindness, I asked my mother about it. She explained that she had learned it from her own mother, my grandmother. Growing up in a large family with eight siblings, my mother often returned home from school to discover that some of their lunch had been given away to hungry travelers. Although the children were upset at times, their mother continued helping others whenever she could.
When I asked my mother whether she would have changed if she had known we disliked her generosity, she answered firmly that she would never stop helping people. Today, I fully understand her actions and remain deeply grateful for the compassion (同情) she planted in me.

All but two of Austria’s 96 glaciers (冰川) have retreated (缩小) over the last two years, the monitors in the Alpine country reported on Friday, saying the “dramatic development” highlights the impact of climate change. The latest report from the Austrian Alpine Club shows the Alpeiner Ferner in the western Tyrol region and Stubacher Sonnblickkees in Salzburg to the east are facing the greatest loss, each with a retreat of more than 100 meters (about 328 feet) . The average retreat was more than 20 meters (about 65 feet) .
“The breakdown of the glacier tongue is also progressing at the Pasterze, Austria’s largest glacier, making the results of climate change visible,” the club said in the report covering 2024 and 2025. It added, “The report confirms once again the long-term trend: The glaciers in Austria continue to retreat significantly in length, area, and volume.” Neighboring Switzerland, which is home to the most glaciers in Europe, has noted a similar retreat in its glaciers in recent years, a trend that has been reported around the world.
The retreat of the glaciers in Europe has implications for drinking water, power generation, agriculture, infrastructure, recreational activities, the Alpine landscape and more. “The glaciers are melting, and with every new report, the urgency grows,” club vice president Nicole Slupetzky said. “It’s no longer a question of whether we can still save the glaciers in their old form; it’s about relieving the results for ourselves.”
Poor weather conditions such as low snowfall, warm temperatures including an exceptionally hot June last year — nearly 5 degrees Celsius above the average — have contributed to the retreat, the club said. These factors accelerated the melting of ice. Without a shift in weather patterns, the trend will likely worsen.
Such changes in the Alps should serve as a “wake-up call” for policymakers and the public in their behavior, the club said. It added the current figure was lower than the figure during the previous two years, but still ranked as the eighth-largest retreat in the 135 years of measurements.

For decades, NASA has advanced on board spacecraft computer processors that perform the functions needed to support mission success.
Space computing began in the 1960s during the Apollo missions. At that time, Apollo Guidance Computer played an important role in guidance, navigation, and control. Later, special processors that could work under strong radiation (辐射) became widely used in space exploration.
NASA has successfully used computers on Mars rovers, orbiters, and space telescopes. These processors have worked for years in extreme conditions. However, future space missions will become longer and more complex. As a result, scientists need computers with stronger computing power and greater independence.
In this case, NASA worked with a company to develop a new technology called High Performance Spaceflight Computing. This new system can provide more than 100 times the computing power of older processors. It also combines computing and networking in one device, which helps reduce energy use and system cost.
The new processors include different types for different mission needs. One version is designed for deep space missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. It can work safely in difficult environments and support real-time autonomous tasks. Another version provides fault tolerance (容错性) and cybersecurity for low Earth orbit satellites.
