In a world filled with constant noise, the concept of silence holds remarkable benefits for both our mental and physical well-being.
Silence can have a calming effect on our minds. The absence of noise gives the brain more time to process information and therefore provides much-needed mental clearness. There have been a variety of studies proving that silence can reduce stress levels. Silence achieves this by lowering cortisol (皮质醇) and adrenaline (肾上腺素), which encourages mindfulness, promotes self-awareness, and allows the brain to “reset” and gives a peaceful break from busy lives.
Physically, silence also plays a positive role. A 2013 study found that silence can increase the number of cells in the hippocampus (海马体) of the brain. Researchers studied mice and found that just two hours of silence a day contributed to cell development. Another study into the effects of music and silence conducted by the National Institutes of Health, which interspersed different musical styles with a period of two-minute silence, discovered that when this silence was introduced, the participants’ breathing frequency, heart rate, and blood pressure all decreased to below initial levels.
While silence has proven mental and physical benefits, it can also make a difference in conversation. Silence in conversation enables us to listen more attentively, giving others the opportunity to share what they need to. This not only makes us better conversational partners but also helps nurture relationships. It helps us to listen and respond in a calm and confident manner.

My mother always told me, “You should explore your own country before stepping out into the world.” However, it seems like a tough mission to travel all across its expansive surfaces. But luckily for me, Via Rail Canada offered youths between the ages of 18 and 25 the chance to ride the train across Canada for the month of July. The ticket was a bargain $150. My best friends Trevor, Joel and Jeremy and I immediately jumped at the opportunity and secured four tickets on the great Canadian railroad.
For a group of 20-year-olds, this was like the first flight of young birds from the nest. When we approached the train station in the morning, our 22-day adventure from Sudbury to Vancouver was to begin. Eyes baggy from lack of sleep, we jumped on board as if it was the train to Hogwarts in Harry Potter. Although the thought of three full days on those tracks covering close to 3, 000 kilometres crushed our spirits a little, what happened next caught us by surprise.
The three days on board turned into a summer camp on rails. At night, we would climb up the glass-domed train car, which gave us a scenic view of the starry night sky, untouched by the harmful light pollution. Before we knew it, the warm sun rays beating down on our faces woke us up for another day on the rails. To my surprise, a sea of golden grain fields dominated the landscape we were in the Canadian Prairies.
Another day slipped away and we set up for another night in the dome (圆顶状物). And this time we were greeted by night sky painted by a fantastic thunderstorm. Lightning was striking at an incredible rate. The spectacular and memorable light show left everyone in the glass bubble in complete disbelief.
Arriving in the Rocky Mountains was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. Before the train adventure, if I could have skipped the travel and arrived at the destination, I would have. That is no longer true. I’ve learned that the journey can be more enjoyable than the destination.

Honey from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees’ nest and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper — a little bird called a honey guide.
The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax in the beehives (蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees’ nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.
Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit.

I promise, I’ll go straight home.” They shook hands and Dave turned around and started walking back towards his truck.
