Anyone who has used AI programs like ChatGPT knows they are great at summarizing textbooks and writing standard cover letters, but can they also produce the kind of writing that moves us and speaks to our souls
Journalist Vauhini Vara thinks the answer is yes. Defining creative writing mainly as “waiting for the right word,” she suspected that generative AI, with its instant access to every noun and adjective in the English dictionary, could be a helpful tool.
Although ChatGPT has been programmed to write in a plain, explanatory way, it can learn to mimic (模仿) other voices provided it has enough training data. “I think there is a misconception that large language models like ChatGPT are not very good at writing in a poetic, literary style,” author Sean Michaels says. “In fact, they can do it easily and quite well.”
For his novel Do You Remember Being Born , in which a poet is approached by a tech company to co-author a collection of poems with their AI, Michaels created a custom version of ChatGPT he called “Moorerebot,” which through training learned to write in the style of real-world poet Marianne Moore, further lessening the distinction between human and machine.
However, the Oscar-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman has been outspoken about his distaste for machine learning. Even if AI were capable of writing something emotional or profound, Kaufman would refuse to recognize this as art because it cannot establish a link between the reader and the author. “If I read a poem,” he said, “and that poem moves me, I am in love with the person who wrote it. I can’t be in love with a computer program.”
Since programs like ChatGPT allow anyone to produce competent prose (散文), the novels of tomorrow may be intentionally less polished, filled with grammatical errors and language styles that point to the limits of the human brain and the uniqueness of individuals. Far from a threat to the survival of creative writing or human creativity in general, AI, like the innovative technologies that came before it, may become a force of change and a source of inspiration.

Researchers from the University of Florida studied what may cause people to choose unknown options over known ones, and they found that where the information comes from is important: when what you know comes from other people’s experiences, you’re more likely to explore new options.
They conducted a series of experiments. In one experiment, participants were asked to choose one of four squares on a computer screen. Each square, or button, hid an amount of money from 1 cent to 40 cents, and participants were told how much money was behind one of the squares in order to help them determine whether to explore and try another square in hopes of turning up more. Some participants were told the information came from another person taking part in the experiment; others were told it came from the computer.
Participants were almost twice as likely to explore an unknown button when the information about the known amount appeared to come from a player rather than the computer. As social beings, we consider other people’s experiences as part of our own, so we’re less likely to want to repeat them, even if the experiences are positive, the researchers find. It doesn’t seem to work the same way with computers.
Not surprisingly, the amount revealed also had an effect: participants were more willing to choose a different square — to explore, so to speak — when the known amount was low and less willing when it was high, no matter the source of the information. But when the revealed amount was in the middle, the human versus (与……相对) computer effect became particularly evident.
The idea that the individual decision about whether to venture out has a social component could have practical implications, the researchers write. “For those seeking to encourage exploration in others, our findings offer a simple intervention: highlight the fact that existing information is available because of previous explorers.”

What we call “numerical competence” is important in life, including in the animal kingdom. Animals benefit from numerical competence in many aspects of their lives.
Honeybees count landmarks to estimate travel distances. You can train them using a feeder with sugar water. On the way to the feeder, you present a certain number of landmarks. For example, the feeder is located at one of five yellow lines on the wall of a flying path. The distance to the food reward varies, but the number of landmarks remains constant. In later trials of new paths, the bees search the area around the landmark they learned, even when the spatial layout or type of landmarks changes. Researchers have found that bees can count up to four objects.
Numbers are also important for hunting. When animals hunt together, the number of hunters is crucial, especially when the prey (猎物) is large, defensive, and capable of kicking hunters to death. This was investigated in wolves that hunt deer and bison (野牛). The probability of catching deer or bison depends on the size of the hunting party. In this case more is not necessarily better, probably because sometimes the wolves get in each other’s way. It seems that wolves know this: If their hunting party is small, they will go for a deer. If their hunting party is larger, they will try to catch a bison.
However, my favorite study about counting animals comes from another pack-living animal: the lion. In a study conducted in Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, female lions were exposed to recordings of unknown female lions roaring (吼叫). The roars could be from one or three unknown female lions. The researchers then observed how the lionesses responded. The lionesses approached the loudspeaker with unknown female lions more often when they heard the roar of one lioness than when they heard the roar of three lionesses. This is not too surprising. However, there was more to it than that. The lionesses also took into account how many members of the pack were present. When they heard three strangers, they called for absent members of their own group.
