Summer is a time for having fun in the sun! Children should have fun but they should also be safe. Here are some helpful safety tips all parents should tell their children.
Never Talk to Strangers
Tell your children not to talk to anyone they don’t know. If someone they don’t know comes up to them, they should either run away if they are alone or go somewhere where there are other people.
Keep Cool in the Heat (高温)
If your children must be outdoors in the heat, make sure that activities should be limited (限制) to 15 minutes. Of course, water is necessary for them. Remember to ask them to drink some every 20 minutes even though they do not feel thirsty.
Water Safety
For children who cannot swim, they should not go into the deep area of the water. And they should also play at places where there are lifeguards (救生员). In this way if something were to happen, they would have someone there help them. Children should never be in a pool alone, anyway.
Bike Safety
Riding can be fun but also dangerous. Remember to ask your children to be careful in the street, sidewalk and even the driveway to your home. They need to be taught never to ride a bike out into the street without first watching out for cars, and never into the street from behind a parked car, or from in between two parked cars. Stay away from them.

From the top of the world’s highest mountain, Mark called his wife to say he made it. His wife, Anne, answered the phone when she was sleeping. She couldn’t hear him clearly on the phone. She was unable to say when he reached the top but thought it was around midday. She also said his “legs” didn’t work well sometimes, so her husband was carrying a spare leg and repair tools. Mark used to be a mountain guide before his accident. He said it was not important that no one like him had ever reached the top of the 8,848.86-metre mountain.

What Causes the Earth to Shake
Why do earthquakes happen Before science was able to explain them, cultural legends tried to account for their origins. Let’s look at some famous earthquake myths (神话).
China
Some ancient Chinese believed that earthquakes were caused by the “imbalance (失衡) of yin and yang”. They were directly related to the bad acts of human beings. Earthquakes were considered as a warning from Heaven to human beings. It was thought that the energy of yin and yang, or that between Heaven and Earth, required balance. It was believed that earthquakes arose when the balance between yin and yang was lost.
Greece
In Greek mythology (神话), earthquakes occurred when Poseidon was very angry. His anger caused not only earthquakes but also tsunamis (海啸). Poseidon was also the ancient Greek god of horses, the sea, rivers, floods and droughts. He held a trident (三叉戟) and was described in mythology as a powerfully built (体格健壮的) man. In ancient Greek texts, Poseidon was said to hit the ground with his powerful weapon and then earthquakes were created.
India
The ancient Indians thought that the Earth was carried by several elephants standing on the back of a great turtle. The elephants were Guozeng, Qingjing, Zengzhang and Erming, and it would cause earthquakes whenever the four elephants shook.

Hi Tina,
I’m glad you asked for advice! Don’t worry. Chinese hosts are very welcoming, and if you follow these tips, you’ll make a great impression! Let me explain step by step.
Firstly, bringing a small gift is a lovely idea. For example, fruit like apples or oranges or a box of tea would be perfect. You don’t need to bring something that is expensive.
Next, table manners are very important here. When eating, remember to wait for the elders to start first. This shows respect. Additionally (此外), never point your chopsticks at others or stick them into rice. It’s considered unlucky.
As for conversations, you can talk about daily topics like food, weather, or your school life. If you’re unsure, just smile and listen politely.
Finally, here are a few other tips. When you enter their house, you’d better ask whether you should take off your shoes. Also, offering to help with small tasks, like setting the table, will show your kindness.
In summary, be yourself and stay polite! They will surely have a good impression of you. If you have more questions, just ask me anytime.
Best wishes,
Yaming

Jordyn was about to turn eight years old when her mom suggested a new way to celebrate her birthday—giving away her gifts to a children’s hospital. At first, Jordyn wasn’t sure. But quickly she made the decision because she thought that she had already had everything she needed, but these kids were having a difficult time in the hospital—they needed more. Years passed. Now Jordyn is a freshman in high school. She continues doing this to help children with serious illnesses. In April this year, she made her eighth annual (年度的) birthday-gift donation to Baptist Children’s Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Jordyn’s efforts have also encouraged her friends.
