To achieve “net zero” by 2045, countries need to cut their emissions (排放) by 85%, compared to 1990. Sweden has achieved an 80% reduction since 1990, securing its place as the second most sustainable country in the world after Finland. And yet, Sweden’s economy has been growing steadily since 1970 and ranked sixth in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking Report.
Sweden has adopted an aggressive carbon tax as part of tax reform. A carbon tax is a charge on carbon to inspire businesses to reduce their emissions and find renewable alternatives. The tax rate has increased steadily since the 1990s and currently covers 40% of Sweden’s carbon emissions. Instead of the public’s backlash, the carbon tax was accepted by the Swedish public. Meanwhile, the nation maintained stable growth and may have even seen economic improvement as it had reduced other taxes to account for the new carbon tax. Sweden also established a Climate Policy Council that evaluates whether government policies are in line with its climate goals.
Though Sweden is a heavily industrialized country with energy-intensive industries such as steel, it has managed to massively decarbonize its economy. Naturally, Sweden has a great supply of wind and water, and forests that cover 70% of its land that absorb carbon dioxide. Sweden took advantage of these natural opportunities. It began cutting fossil (化石) fuels in the 1970s during a global oil crisis, choosing that time to build on nuclear energy and further establish hydropower and wind energy.
Sweden also helped reduce emissions from heating and energy-intensive industries by investing in district heating systems powered by biofuel and waste incineration (焚烧). District heating systems, though expensive, are more efficient since they distribute heat to multiple houses and industrial areas instead of requiring separate heating units in each building.
Swedish citizens have been engaged in making sustainable choices, such as buying ecolabeled products and sorting waste. Data shows 40% of Swedes purchased eco-labeled products in July, more than the European average, according to the European Commission. Also, 88%of all metal cans and PET bottles were recycled.

Point Nemo, located between Chile and New Zealand, is 2,688 kilometres away from the closest land point. It was named by Croatian survey engineer Hrvoje Lukatela, who was studying ocean currents at the time. He named the point after Captain Nemo from Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
There is no set way to get there, given its inaccessibility. But that didn’t stop British explorer Chris Brown, who completed his feat (壮举) earlier this month. “Having considered several different ways of getting to Point Nemo, we hit on the idea of using an expedition (探险) boat called the Hanse Explore.”
Brown set sail “in the early hours” of March 12, and expected it to take 10 days to reach Point Nemo. He said the crew was “immediately thrust into our first South Pacific storm” and reported fast winds and “six-metre waves”.
Brown said that going through the storm was inevitable (不可避免的). “One of the reasons for setting off when we did, instead of waiting out the storm, was the forecast for conditions at Point Nemo. Captain Andriy Bratash spotted that there was a weather window at the Pole which would allow us to use the Zodiac RIBs (a smaller boat) and to possibly get into the water. If we were late arriving, Nemo would be in the center of a hurricane force storm.”
After 10 days, and 4,200 km, Brown and the crew arrived. At that stage, waves had “only” started to reach 3 metres in height, Brown said. This meant the crew were able to launch the Zodiacs and be in the water—the first person in recorded history able to do so.
“At all the other Poles of Inaccessibility I’ve visited, I’ve taken a photo standing at the exact spot. That wasn’t going to be possible this time. So, I came up with the idea of ‘floating’ at the Pole and holding the maritime flags spelling out the word N. E. M. O,” Brown said.

The thick-trunk, tiny-branch baobab tree, which dots Madagascar’s landscape, should not, by rights, have survived to the present day, as its former seed-distributing animals went extinct 1000 years ago. However, it did. Seheno Andriantsaralaza at the University of Antananarivo in Madagascar and Onja Razafindratsima at the University of California, Berkeley, now think they may know the reason.
Together with their colleagues, the scientists monitored 15 trees to specify new baobab seed-distributing animals in the region. They also set up camera traps around seed-containing fruits, and searched any feces (粪便) along the way for the presence of seeds.
They report in the journal Biotropica that a native rat was caught on camera handing whole fruits on four occasions. Although there was no record of the rat breaking the fruits open, the team found 13 fruits that had been chewed into and had the seeds removed. Though the bite marks were not clear enough to identify the animal, this was clear evidence that a seed-distributing one was out there. They then found convincing evidence: baobab seeds in seven different piles of bush-pig feces.
The discovery is not without irony. Scientists believe bush pigs were brought to Madagascar by humans somewhere between 1,000 and 5,000 years ago, just as the former seed-distributing animals were going extinct. Their arrival was a lucky break for the baobabs, especially as scientists have determined a seed’s journey through the digestive system doesn’t harm its ability to grow.
While the finding is important in its own right, it also provides valuable evidence that introduced species may not be entirely harmful. Madagascar’s pigs, for example, though not native, have made themselves necessary to the survival of truly native species. Similar relationships are suspected to hold in South America between rabbits native to Europe and plants with no seed distributors. For Dr. Andriantsaralaza, that suggests the full ecological role of introduced species should be considered before the talk of eradication (根除) begins.
