Earlier in his advertising career, McCann global CEO Tyler Turnbull worked for Canadian telecom firm Rogers. “They were one of those clients that you love or hate,” he recalled. “I loved them because you got to do so much work — it was stressful and 24/7.”
The office is not the only place where Turnbull appreciates a challenge that pushes his skills to the limit. On weekends during the winter, you’ll find him on the mountains of Ontario. He skied two days a week and kept up the hobby all over the world, from France to Italy to Alberta’s Banff National Park.
Now a dad himself, Turnbull has continued the skiing tradition with his kids, 11 and 9, beginning when they were preschoolers. But sticking with the sport has helped the Turnbull family bond over not just the excitement of skiing down a mountain, but during the chairlift ride up. “It’s a one-to-one time, no digital devices. We have lots of good, uninterrupted time.”
On Saturday mornings from November to March, both of his kids attended competitive programs, which inspired Turnbull and the other parents to hire their own instructor for two-hour Dad Park Lessons. Going strong for five years now, the dads train in freestyle skiing, which essentially turns a mountain into a skate park: large-scale jumps, boxes and other obstacles.
While Turnbull believes in the value of being uncomfortable in the service of progress, whether in his career or on the slopes ( 滑雪坡), the challenge isn’t always about finding a mountain that’s higher or sharper. To him, there’s value in making the same journey again and again. “If you’re skiing the same run every day for 20 years, it’s different every time based on the conditions,” he said, a reminder to stay alert and adaptable.

History is written, read, told — but rarely ever is it smelled.
Historians and scientists across Europe have now gotten together with perfumers(调香师)and museums for a unique project: to reveal what Europe smelled like between the 16th and early 20th centuries. A European street today may smell like coffee, fresh-baked bread and cigarettes. But what did it smell like hundreds of years ago As part of this three-year-long project called “Odeuropa”, the researchers want to find all the old scents(气味)of Europe — and even recreate some of this ancient smellscape: from the dry tobacco scents to the smelly canals.
To do this, they will first build artificial intelligence (AI) that will be trained to go through historical texts, written in seven different languages, for any descriptions of scents. The AI will also be trained to detect images of objects in the texts that might be scented. The team will then use this information to create an online encyclopedia(百科全书)of smells from Europe’s past.
The encyclopedia will include the meaning of certain scents and will trace the stories behind scents, places and related practices, according to project leader Angela Lee. “This database will become a library for the smell heritage of Europe, enabling future generations to access and learn about the scented past.” The encyclopedia will also include descriptions of people for whom smell was important.
The researchers will then work with chemists and perfume makers to recreate past smells and figure out how to display the smells in museums and other historical sites. With current technology, almost every scent can be produced. “The more difficult part of the project will be to find descriptions of scents, because people haven’t always talked or written about them,” Lee said.
Scent plays a central role in our everyday life, even acting as a powerful time machine into our own past with its ability to activate long-forgotten memories. But it’s also a key tool in telling the stories of others. “Scent gives us access to the past in a much more direct and emotional way than language and images,” Lee said.

If you happen to be in Hollywood and see a car go by with no driver at the wheel, don’t be alarmed. After more than a year of testing, around 50 driverless robotaxis are debuting (首次亮相) to the public across Los Angeles on Thursday.
The autonomous vehicles are run by Waymo, which is owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet. Waymo started giving driverless rides to passengers in San Francisco last year and also operates them in Phoenix. In the coming weeks, Waymo will change to a paid service.
The Southern California debut comes as controversy and mistakes have troubled self-driving cars in San Francisco. Both Waymo and its competitor Cruise, which is owned by GM, have been blamed for running red lights, blocking public buses and getting in the way of emergency responders.
Cruise was involved in an incident that left a pedestrian (行人) severely injured in October — causing the company to stop operations and lose its operating permit in the state. It hasn’t necessarily been a smooth ride for Waymo in Los Angeles. In the run-up to its debut in the city, there have been complaints by Los Angeles’s mayor Karen Bass and protests by local residents. “Autonomous vehicles like the ones that Waymo wants to launch in our communities, have been causing chaos wherever they go.” Yvonne Wheeler, president of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor said. “It’s clear that this technology is not ready to be introduced into our roads and our cities.”
However, both Cruise and Waymo say their vehicles are safer than human drivers and that they’ve had relatively few incidents. “Once an unimaginable future, autonomous driving is now a real-world way of getting around for tens of thousands of people each week,” said Tekedra Mawakana, co-CEO of Waymo. He also mentioned that Waymo is already setting its sights on its next robotaxi debut. It says it plans to start offering rides in Austin, Texas, later this year.
