Many people love travelling to different countries, but if you plan to go abroad (到国外), you should know how to behave in different situations around the world.
①________
Most travelers enjoy meeting new people, but sometimes you can be rude without knowing the customs when people first meet. In Russia, you should never shake hands in the doorway. When the Japanese (日本人) meet new people, they like giving business cards (名片), but you should read the card carefully, not just put it in your pocket.
②________
In most countries in Europe (欧洲), people expect a lot of eye contact when you talk to them, but in many Asian countries a lot of eye contact seems unfriendly. And in China, people usually stand quite close to each other when they talk, but in countries like the USA you need to give people more personal space.
③________
In restaurants in China, you can leave a bit of food on your plate. It’s OK to start smoking before other people finish eating, which you mustn’t do in the UK. When in India, remember to eat with your right hand. Also avoid leaving empty bottles on the dinner table in Russia — that’s too important.
④________
When you are travelling in Asia, if someone invites you to his or her home, don’t forget to take off your shoes when you arrive. And if you visit an Arab family’s home, don’t admire (夸赞) anything valuable because your host will feel he should give it to you as a present.
With so much to think about, it’s not surprising that many people prefer going on holiday in their own countries, or they might just decide to stay at home! But anyway, wherever you go, please remember, you should respect the customs there and try to get used to the life there.

The United Nations (UN) has decided that 2025 is the year of glacier preservation (冰川保护). It has also set March 21, 2025 as the first yearly World Day for Glaciers. The goal is to encourage everyone to help save glaciers.
Glaciers are made of ice and snow that slowly move over land. A glacier starts with a snowflake (雪花). Over time, the snow adds up and turns into glacier ice. Glaciers have shaped (塑造) mountains and valleys over Earth’s history. They are still moving and changing land in many places today.
★ When glaciers melt (融化), they provide nutrients (养料)for lakes, rivers and oceans. These nutrients support the lives along the way and form a perfect food chain (食物链). In some places, glaciers even help create homes for plants and animals. The UN says there are about 200,000 glaciers in the world, covering 10 percent (百分之)of the land. They also hold 70 percent of Earth’s fresh water. In areas like the Himalayas, millions of people depend on glaciers for water. These glaciers also feed big rivers, such as the Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra.
Climate (气候)changes are leading to serious problems for glaciers. Many glaciers have disappeared. For example, Colombia has lost 90 percent of its glaciers since the mid-19th century (世纪). If temperatures rise by 1.5 to 4 degrees, glaciers could lose a lot of their weight by the year 2100.
This would mean there will be less water for us to drink and farm, while floods may happen more often because of melting ice. It would also be bad for animals and humans.
Also, when glaciers melt, it also changes how the sunlight is reflected (反射). This can make a big difference to the whole (整个的) climate. So people from all over the world are trying out smart ways to help cool them down.
12. In which picture can we see glaciers
13. Which of the following can be put in ★
A.Glaciers are very important to life on Earth
B.Glaciers are disappearing little by little
C.Glaciers will become smaller soon
14. According to the text, glaciers are NOT able to ________.
A.give people fresh water to drink B.make a difference to the climate
C.make snowflakes by themselves
15. What would the writer write about after the last paragraph
A.The benefits of getting cool. B.The dangers of melting glaciers.
C.The ways of protecting glaciers.
