As we all know, water is the source of life. Water is used in homes, in farming, and in manufacturing. However, water pollution has become extremely serious nowadays. One major reason is that some factories pour waste water directly into rivers, which contains harmful substances. Another cause is that people throw a lot of rubbish into water bodies, making the water dirty.
To protect the environment and deal with this pollution, the government should make strict rules. Factories that discharge pollutants into rivers must be stopped. What’s more, everyone should save water in daily life, as saving water is what we can do to protect water resources.
In my view, water is crucial for all living things. We should take immediate action to prevent further water pollution so that we can have enough clean water for the future.甘肃古浪县第三中学等校2025-2026学年下学期期末联考高一英语试卷

High school was a hard time for me in the beginning because I had just moved to a small town and knew basically no one. I loved to play basketball but was afraid to go to tryout (选拔) for the school’s team because I didn’t know anyone. One day all that changed when I missed the bus home and decided to shoot baskets on the school playground to kill time. The coach Mr. Colbath had been watching me make various baskets and was pretty impressed with my moves.
He came up to me and asked me who had taught me to play like that. I told him that my dad had taught me how to play basketball. He asked me if he would see me at the tryout on Friday, but I said no and told him why. He told me to have a try because I played very well and would maybe make some friends on the court (球场). After thinking for a few minutes. I finally decided to have a try.
On the day of the tryout, the coach came, found me and helped me practise before the tryout. He helped me a lot and I did very well at the tryout and many members of the team were quite impressed. I did make the team and over the next few years the coach helped me both on and off the court. He helped me do my maths which I had such a difficult time with and he even taught me how to live independently.

Twenty-five years ago, most young Britons wanted a career (职业) in law, to be a doctor, or, if they were creative enough, to take up singing. But today, things stand differently.
According to a survey by Tesco Mobile, a UK company, the “dream job” of young people aged between 16 and 25 in the UK is a video blogger, or “vlogger”. The survey, carried out among 1,002 people, found that as much as 40 percent of them put the vlogger as their number one choice on a list of ideal careers.
This change is undoubtedly the result of the growing digital space, as the Internet has made it much easier to reach audiences around the world without people having to enter a career in show business in the traditional way.
In the past, the biggest stars were trained by the Hollywood studios. Now, anyone with a camera can become a star. Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are normal people communicating with their fans about everyday lives.
However, what people see is only the bright side of being a vlogger and they fail to notice the fact that only those who are successful earn fame (声誉) and money. For every success there are hundreds of others who never get off the starting line. There are the dreams that come true and the dreams that remain dreams forever.
Although being vloggers is popular, some young people choose to follow careers that don’t necessarily earn them fame, but allow them to make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the Finishers Club. It’s an online platform for runners to keep a record of their races. His job allows him to express his enthusiasm (热情), and is always a learning experience. And that’s enough for him.
28. Why do more and more young Britons choose to be vloggers
A. Vloggers are much richer than others.
B. Anyone with a camera will surely become a star.
C. The Internet makes it convenient to become vloggers.
D. There is too much competition in the traditional business.
29. What can we infer from the Paragraph 5
A. A vlogger cannot earn fame or money.
B. Only a few vloggers can be successful.
C. Dreams will always remain as dreams.
D. People seldom see the bright side of being a vlogger.
30. What do young people like David do on the Internet
A. Mix jobs with hobbies. B. Become an online hit.
C. Hold running races. D. Learn from others.
31. What does the text mainly talk about
A. Steps to be a famous vlogger. B. The dangers of online careers.
C. Different ways to use the Internet. D. Young Britons’ changing dream jobs.
D
A new scientific study suggests that global warming is changing the rotation (旋转) of the Earth and is also increasing the length of day at an unusual rate. The speed of change is higher than at any point in the 20th century, they found.
Here’s what’s happening: As the planet heats up, ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are melting, and this water from the polar regions is flowing into the world’s oceans at the equator (赤道), which is changing the Earth’s shape and slowing its speed of rotation. Thus, as the Earth is turning more slowly, the days are getting longer, although only minimally, on the order of a few milliseconds a day. But it’s possibly enough to affect GPS, communications and even space travel.
This isn’t the first study to make such a statement: A 2021 study found that masses of melting ice around the world — a result of rising temperatures from the burning of fossil fuels (化石燃料) — caused the location of the North and South Poles to move eastward since the mid-1990s.
Climate scientist Vincent Humphrey of the University of Zurich, who was not part of the 2021 study nor the new research, previously explained how more water at the equator affects how fast the Earth spins (旋转). He compared it to a ‘skater spinning on the ice’. “If they hold their arms out, their spinning is slower, but if they bring them into their body, then they speed up.” The same thing happens to the Earth.
Another cause of the Earth’s rotational slowdown is tidal friction (潮汐摩擦), which is caused by the moon, according to a statement from ETH Zurich. However, the new research comes to a surprising conclusion: “If humans continue to produce more greenhouse gases and the Earth warms up accordingly, this would finally have a greater influence on the Earth’s rotational speed than the effect of the Moon, which has determined the increase in the length of the day for billions of years.”
32. What does the underlined word “melting” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Turning into water. B. Falling down quickly.
C. Growing larger in size. D. Moving around fast.
33. Why is Vincent Humphrey mentioned
A. To show Earth’s rotation is similar to skating.
B. To make the findings more understandable.
C. To tell people how fast the Earth spins.
D. To prove his previous finding.
34. What are people expected to do according to the last paragraph
A. Find out more causes of the Earth’s rotational slowdown.
B. Adapt themselves to the longer days in the future.
C. Try to decrease the effect of the Moon on the Earth.
D. Take measures to reduce greenhouse gases.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Ice Sheets Change the Earth’s Shape.
B. The Moon Speeds up the Earth’s Rotation.
C. Global Warming Makes Days Longer.
D. Tidal Friction Affects the Location of Poles.
