For as long as I can remember, I want to be a performer. But when it was time to go to college and decide what I wanted to be for the rest of my life, it didn’t occur to me to choose drama as my major. Making a living as a performer seemed impractical to me. So instead of starting drama, I started pre-law, and then went to law school like my two sisters did before me. They seemed happy enough, I thought; they worked about 80 hours a week, but they made good money and could afford expensive cars and fancy apartments in the city.
After law school, I got a new job and worked as a lawyer for a big company. I had great benefits, including four weeks of vacation a year, but I never got to use any of my vacation time because there was always too much work to do. I worked from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week, and when I was finished, all I could do was collapse into my bed until I woke up to do it all over again the next day.
After five years of this lifestyle, I thought I was going to go crazy. I was unhappy and exhausted, I never saw my friends or my family, and I realized I hadn’t been in a play or musical since I started law school. I thought that acting in a small community play might make me feel better, but rehearsals and performances all took place during my work hours. So I made an extreme decision and quit my job.
I got a small part in a local play and then the lead role. Now I make my living from acting, and once in a while, I do some legal consulting for a little extra money. I don’t get paid a lot for my acting jobs, but it’s enough. I had to give up my big apartment and expensive car, but I’m so much happier now. I see my friends and family, I have free time, and I get to do something I love every day.

In some areas of India, only about 30% of the women can read and write. Most girls have to leave school to help support the family. Women are not permitted to interact with men lawyers, be taught by men teachers or get treated by men doctors.
An organization called Selfie with Daughter Foundation is leading the campaign to educate women in these areas. Its aim is to bring change by publicizing the success stories of some young women who made it to college and now serve as role models for other families. The young women go from house to house to share their own experiences to persuade parents to keep their daughters at school.
Rizwana Khan is training to be a nurse. As a teenager, she became terribly sick, but her treatment was a problem. Medical centers in the area were of very poor quality and there were no women doctors. It made her decide to get her own education. She wants to bring medical aid to women in her area. “Some families don’t want to educate their daughters, but if women are ill, they want a lady doctor. How will that happen ” Rizwana said.
Anjum Islam is studying law. She wants to provide free legal aid for women. But her bigger goal is to change minds. “Men think that women are only meant to do housework and give birth to children,” Islam said. “We have to change this thinking. If we have equality under the law, how can society look down on women ”
The campaign is having success in influencing some women. Aslima Khan is 30 years old. All day long she works with the animals, finds firewood, cleans, cooks and washes dishes. She is determined to educate her three daughters. She wants to make sure they can escape her life story of hard, backbreaking work. “Had I studied, I would have been saved from this,” she said.

NASA’s Curiosity vehicle recently recorded the largest level of methane (甲烷) ever measured during its seven-year Mars mission. The discovery is exciting because the existence of methane gas could support the case for life on Mars.
Methane has no color or smell. A special instrument on Curiosity’s Mars Science Laboratory recorded the increased gas level. The device, called a laser spectrometer, measures levels of chemical elements and gases in the Martian atmosphere. In addition to methane, the instrument can record levels of water and CO2. Nearly all the methane gas found in Earth’s atmosphere is produced by biological activity. It usually comes from animal and plant life. But it can also be formed by geological (地质的) processes, such as interactions between rocks and water. NASA said the increased methane was measured to be about 21 parts per billion by volume (ppbv). One ppbv means that if you take a volume of air on Mars, one billionth of the volume of air is methane.
It was not the first time Curiosity had found methane gas in the Martian atmosphere. About a year ago, NASA announced that Curiosity had discovered sharp seasonal increases in the gas. This time, NASA said the measured methane gas level was clearly larger than any others observed in the past. NASA officials even temporarily stopped Curiosity’s other activities to investigate further.
Curiosity does not have instruments that can exactly identify whether the source of the methane is biological or geological. One leading theory is that methane is being released from underground areas created by possible life forms that disappeared long ago. Even though Mars has no active volcanoes, scientists believe it is also possible that methane is being produced by reactions involving carbon materials and water.
A clearer understanding of methane levels over time could help scientists determine where they’re located on Mars. Scientists hope this understanding will come as Curiosity continues to collect methane data in its search for possible life.
