Enric Sala isn’t a medical doctor, but he is regularly writing prescriptions (处方). His patient The ocean. The prescription Marine protected areas (MPAs) — a designated safe zone for ocean life where fishing, mining and other destructive human activities are banned. As news of coral bleaching, overfishing and ocean warming events dominate the headlines, the former university professor quit academia to become a full-time conservationist, advocating finding a cure for an ocean that, at times, can appear on its deathbed.
Since 2008, Sala has built a team of scientists, filmmakers, policy professionals and communicators to form Pristine Seas — an initiative that explores marine ecosystems to help protect the world’s most vital ocean areas. On their expeditions, scientists and filmmakers are invited by governments to spend weeks at a time at sea, collecting films and data to submit to local government leaders so they can determine which parts of their ocean are most important to protect.
Sala, a man who is equally at ease slipping on a wetsuit for a dive as he is donning a suit and tie for fundraising events or meetings with country leaders, understands that to truly inspire people to enact marine protections, you have to bring people close enough to care. “When we take government leaders down hundreds of meters underwater, we can open a window to their world that they’ve never seen before,” Sala says. “You can see the amazement and pride on their faces.”
Perhaps MPAs’ biggest opponents are industrial fishing lobbyists (说客) keen on keeping oceans open to large-scale fishing efforts. They argue that MPAs would hold back economic development and decrease fisheries’ productivity.
Sala and his colleague demonstrated that within MPAs, not only do target species bounce back, with an increase in fish biomass of more than 500%, but entire ecosystems are also restored. The populations then “spill over” into nearby unprotected fishing grounds. “Ocean protection and fishing have always had the same goal,” Sala says.

Search online and you will find countless DIYbio trends that promise healthier aging, from using hyperbaric oxygen therapy to sleeping under red lights. But research from Tufts University points to a much simpler lifestyle change that appears to work: eating slightly fewer calories.
The findings come from CALERIE, short for Comprehensive Assessment of Long-term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy. In the study, 143 participants tried to reduce their calorie intake by 25% for two years, while 75 others continued eating normally as the control group.
Researchers found notable improvements among the participants who reduced calories. Many shifted their diets away from fats and toward more protein and carbohydrates. Although the group achieved only about a 12% calorie reduction instead of the targeted 25%, they still experienced significant declines in blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, and insulin levels compared with the control group. A paper released earlier this year found that lowering calorie intake did not reduce the overall nutritional quality of participants’ diets.
“The most exciting part is that we saw these benefits with only a moderate level of restriction that’s feasible for most people. It doesn’t have to take extreme measures. For some people, just skipping a large daily sugary coffee drink can do the trick,” says Sai Krupa Das, one of the researchers.
Researchers are still unable to understand exactly why calorie restriction boosts health. One theory is that eating less helps the body generate energy more efficiently while producing fewer reactive oxygen species, unstable molecules (分子) that can damage cells and contribute to diseases ranging from cancer to Parkinson’s disease. One test confirmed that the participants in the calorie restriction group had lower levels of these molecules than the control group.
The CALERIE project is still ongoing. Researchers still do not know whether calorie restriction works best as a permanent lifestyle or as a shorter-term intervention. “I think the follow-up was necessary given such promising results in the primary study, and it is crucial to see how things play out over time,” Das says.

To the untrained eye, there is very little difference between the three known versions of the artwork The Lute Player. Almost identical in composition, the paintings all depict a young subject, in white clothes and with an instrument in hand, turning slightly away from the viewer. Each appears to carry Italian painter Caravaggio’s distinctive mastery of light and shadow.
To art historians, however, there has long been broad agreement: The versions held by Russia’s Hermitage Museum and France’s Wildenstein Collection were created by Caravaggio, while the one at Britain’s Badminton House is merely a copy.
A Swiss tech company begged to differ and it claimed there was an almost 86% chance that Badminton House’s version is authentic. The company’s AI model, which was trained to recognize markers of Caravaggio’s style, including shapes, color palettes and compositional structures, also declared (though with less statistical certainty) that Wildenstein’s version was likely a copy. Its analysis found “a significant difference” between the latter painting’s “visual characteristics” and those of Caravaggio’s other works.
The company’s declarations have not always contradicted the established scholarship. It claimed that a long-disputed (长期存在争议的) painting of Vincent van Gogh at the National Museum in Oslo had a 97% chance of being genuine. The Vincent van Gogh authorship was later matched by more conventional research, including technical analyses and studies of the artist’s letters.
The company’s authentication approach combines machine learning, deep neural networks and computer vision algorithms (算法). To date, the company has produced models for over 200 artists. In each, the AI is trained on two photographic datasets: A “positive” one, containing images of undisputed paintings by the artist mentioned, and a “negative” one comprising similar but inauthentic works. The company emphasized that having a “high degree of similarity” between the two datasets to learn the difference is crucial.
“I have reservations about it. Authentication is rarely just about surface style,” said art historian Sharon Hecker. “You have to know about the workshop, practices, materials, the condition of the work, the restoration history and how a particular artist’s work evolved over time.”

W: Growing up in a family of successful building designers, I always want to follow in my parents’ footsteps. My biggest dream is to see a building designed by me. Luckily, I was finally accepted into a university to major in that this year. Before starting my university life, my dad encouraged me to see some wonders of engineering in Beijing this summer vacation, like the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace. But besides all these ancient buildings, I’m looking forward to seeing one of the city’s greatest one — the CITIC Tower. Its unique design was inspired by the shape of a traditional Chinese bottle called “Zun”, leading many to call it “China Zun”. It has 108 floors above ground and 7 floors underground. With a height of 528 meters, it’s the tallest building in the whole city now. The building has many different uses.
