Less Crowds, More Beauty
The Grand Canyon welcomed 4.9 million visitors in 2024. But there is somewhere equally breathtaking with far fewer crowds. It’s called Coconino National Forest, stretching across nearly 2 million acres between Phoenix and Flagstaff.
How to Get There
Getting there is easy. Fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and drive 1.5 hours north via Interstate 17. Or fly to Flagstaff Pulliam Airport, served by American Airlines with daily flights from Phoenix, Dallas, and Los Angeles. From there, the forest is just a 20-minute drive.
About the Forest
Named after the Cohonina people, the forest was designated a national forest by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908. Today, its three districts protect 10 wilderness areas home to elk, mule deer, mountain lions, and bobcats.
Hiking Information
Trails: 482 trails extending hundreds of miles
Pass Required:
1. Red Rock Pass: $5 per day (for individuals only)
2. All-Inclusive Annual Pass: $80 (for individuals and families)
Top Trails:
Devil’s Bridge Trail: 3.9-mile out-and-back hike to a huge sandstone arch.
Kachina Peaks Trail: 9.6-mile hike to Humphreys Peak (12,633 feet), Arizona’s highest point. Grand Canyon view available on clear days from Humphreys Peak.

Jim Fullan is often mistaken as a player’s dad. Sometimes people even think he’s a coach. But the 57-year-old man is actually just part of the team. His return to the baseball field has been a lifelong dream. Fullan retired last year to reach his goal of playing college baseball. “I never took the opportunity to play in college or continue to try,” he says. “It was always on my mind.”
Fullan applied to several Pennsylvania community colleges to get his degree and spoke to a couple of baseball coaches to learn about the programs. But they refused him. It wasn’t until he went to a few of the Montgomery County Community College Mustangs’ games last spring that he felt he found support. He introduced himself to the coaches and they accepted the idea of him becoming a special student and an athlete.
Fullan showed up for the tryout last fall. The tryout made him anxious, particularly because he didn’t know how he was going to be received by his much younger teammates. There is truly a big age gap, but he immediately caught the attention of the young who admired his determination. With 25 players trying out, only 18 made the team. That total included Fullan.
When not attending class, Fullan is putting in work on the field. He’s not using age as an excuse. He attends all of the daily three-hour practices from Monday to Friday. Fullan says it is a daily challenge to keep up with his younger teammates so he has to get to practice early before they arrive. Actually, Fullan is able to share his wealth of knowledge from his life experience with his teammates. This enables him to develop good relationships with the team.
His story has been an inspiration to many away from the baseball field, including Kelly Dunbar, director of athletics at Montgomery County Community College. “I admire his courage to keep his dream alive,” she says, “because many people don’t do that these days.”
4. What can be learned about Fullan from the first two paragraphs
A.He hoped to re-experience college life.
B.He taught young players after retirement.

A.The difficulty of keeping focused.
B.Serious competition among players.
C.Uncertainty about teammates’ attitudes.
D.The thought of making simple mistakes.
6. How does Fullan benefit his teammates with his participation
A.By providing job opportunities.
B.By sharing his life wisdom.
C.By driving training plans.
D.By offering baseball skills.
7. What’s the best title of the text
A.An Old Coach Returns to the Field
B.A Team’s New Member
C.A Student Athlete in College
D.A Lifelong Baseball Dream Comes True

Some birds have developed a curious habit: they put cigarette butts (烟头) in their nests. A new study adds evidence for why urban birds have picked up this preference, at least in one species: the poisons in cigarette butts may keep pests (害虫) at bay in the nests of blue tits, colorful birds that are found across Europe.
Cigarette butts contain about 4,000 chemical compounds, including nicotine, arsenic and heavy metals, which could keep away pests like ticks, fleas and blowflies that harm birds and their babies. So the researchers wanted to know whether blue tits could benefit from cigarette butts.
A team at the University of Lodz in Poland studied blue tits in urban parkland and forest. They tracked the health of 99 birds born in three types of nests: untreated nests, nests with sterilized (无菌的) man-made cotton wool, and those with two used cigarette butts. Thirteen days after birth, the blood test showed that babies in both the sterilized and butt nests were healthier than those in the untreated nests. After the birds could fly, the researchers analyzed the pest populations. They were most numerous in untreated nests and nearly absent from sterilized nests. In the butt nests, the pests were slightly fewer than in the untreated nests. The modest effect found in the new study might be a result of using only two butts.
In contrast, a team in Mexico City found that house finches, another bird species, put an average of 8 to 10 cigarette butts into their nests. A follow-up experiment showed that when researchers added more pests to nests, these birds responded by adding more cigarette butts.
Sarah Bush, an ecologist at the University of Utah (the USA), called the new study’s effort “monumental” despite its small sample. “It’s very hard to get large sample sizes with birds in the field,” she said.
8. What does the underlined word “evidence” refer to in paragraph 1
A.The poisons that cigarette butts contain.
B.The pest-fighting effect of cigarette butts.
C.The possible damage of pests on urban birds.
D.The fact that urban birds prefer cigarette butts.
9. What did the Polish study find about butt nests
A.They had the opposite result.
B.They attracted baby and adult birds.
C.They were equal to sterilized nests.
D.They were better than untreated nests.
10. What did the follow-up experiment in Mexico City indicate
A.Finches were hard-working.
B.Birds escaped pest-filled nests.
C.Eight butts worked ineffectively.
D.Finches adjusted accordingly.
11. What is Sarah Bush’s attitude toward the new study
A.Doubtful but polite.
B.Critical and demanding.
C.Favorable but realistic.
D.Approving and enthusiastic.

Birds do it. Bees do it. Even animals without central nervous systems do it. And of course babies do it — yet less than their exhausted parents would like.
But, despite its universality, sleep remains a mysterious process. Indeed, although sleep seems to be crucial for physical and mental well-being, scientists are still trying to work out its biological logic. Research points to a theory, which suggests that the brain needs to “reset” periodically to keep the mind in good operating order — with exciting hints that sleep’s effect on the gut (肠道) might also come into play.
Not only is getting enough sleep satisfying in its own right, but it also has a broader effect on health. Evidence indicates that people who sleep less than six hours per night are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than people who sleep longer. A theory first proposed more than ten years ago holds that sleep helps the brain to clear out tau protein, which contributes to this neurodegenerative (神经退行) condition. But in the past years, a fierce scientific debate has arisen about the physiological (生理的) details of this connection. The resulting uncertainty has made it more difficult to take advantage of the correlation between sleep and Alzheimer’s to develop strategies to prevent the happening of this disastrous condition.
Sleep can also help to address a less-severe and more-common health issue than dementia (痴呆): the desire to lose weight. A leading sleep specialist explains how longer sleep leads to people consuming fewer calories and losing kilograms. And weight loss lowers the risk of sleep apnoea, in which a person’s breathing during sleep is interrupted, and, in turn, lessens the chances of developing type 2 diabetes.
Sleep scientists have no shortage of questions to explore. These include the link between night-time illumination (照明) and mood disorders, the disappointing finding that napping might increase the risk of heart disease and the confirmation that early morning university classes discourage attendance and reduce learning.
12. What is the primary purpose of paragraph 1
A.To highlight the widespread nature of sleep.
B.To explain why babies sleep less than adults.
C.To introduce the biological definition of sleep.
D.To compare the sleep habits of different species.
13. Why is it hard to develop Alzheimer’s prevention strategies based on sleep research
A.Proteins harm sleep indirectly.
B.Short sleep prevents Alzheimer’s.
C.No debate is over their connection.
D.The sleep-Alzheimer’s link is unclear.
14. What can be inferred according to the last paragraph
A.Mood disorders directly lead to heart disease.
B.Early morning classes are effective for weight loss.
C.Some common habits carry unexpected health risks.
D.Night-time illumination is beneficial for mental health.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Why Babies Need More Sleep
B.Where Napping Benefits Our Body
C.What Scientists Learn about Sleep
D.How to Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease

Lena had always been confident in her studies — until she entered high school. In her first math class, Mr. Carter wrote a series of expressions on the blackboard. While most of her classmates nodded and took notes, the symbols “x” and “y” seemed to swim before her eyes. She felt as if she were listening to a “foreign language”.
The confusion only grew when she sat down to do her homework. For two hours she remained at her desk, staring at the textbook and the blank pages of her notebook. She reread the first question ten times, but the numbers refused to make sense. Upset and ashamed, she never felt so defeated by a subject.
Her anxiety deepened over the following days. She stopped raising her hand. She was worried that her questions would sound stupid. One day, Mr. Carter called on her to answer a question. Lena stood up, her face burning with embarrassment because she was totally clueless about the answer. But a boy named Jax said in a low voice, “Even a middle schooler knows that!”
Lena bit her lip and sank back into her seat with her head hanging very low. Seeing this, Mr. Carter asked Lena to stay after class. Instead of criticizing her, he said gently, “I notice you’ve been struggling, Lena. Math can be tough at first. Like learning to play a musical instrument, it requires the right method and a lot of practice. I have talked to Zoe and she has agreed to help you. You know, she is a kind girl and is always ready to help.”
The next day, Mr. Carter rearranged the seats, and Zoe became Lena’s new deskmate.

Every afternoon, the two girls studied together. Zoe patiently analyzed every difficult math point for Lena and taught her practical learning methods. Whenever Lena made mistakes or felt confused, Zoe always encouraged her patiently instead of laughing at her. Inspired by Zoe’s kindness, Lena practiced math problems diligently every day and gradually built up her confidence. She no longer feared math and dared to raise questions actively in class.
One month later, the result of the first math exam came out. To everyone’s surprise, Lena made great progress and got a satisfying score. Mr. Carter praised her for her diligence and perseverance in front of the whole class. Jax also felt ashamed of his rude words before. Lena smiled happily, knowing that progress came from constant practice and sincere help. She was grateful to Mr. Carter and Zoe, and became more confident about her future study.
