MIT scientists have created a kind of high-tech “wrap” capable of collecting safe drinking water directly from the air even in extreme environments.
The water harvester is made from hydrogel (水凝胶) that is wrapped between two layers of glass. At night, the device absorbs water vapor (蒸气) from the atmosphere. During the day, the vapor becomes water on the glass thanks to a coating that keeps the glass cool. The liquid water then flows down the glass and is collected in a system of tubes.The hydrogel comes in a special shape — a series of round roofs with a circular base, which are like a sheet of wrap that expands when absorbing water vapor. The shape increases the material’s surface area, which increases the amount of vapor it can hold. This process requires no electricity, enhancing its sustainability and suitability.
Scientists tested the new device for a week in Death Valley, the hottest and driest place in North America. It could even generate about 1/4 to 2/3 of a cup of water(57 ml-161.5ml) every day. In other areas, the device should generate more. One challenge with the hydrogel had been the leakage of harmful salts into the collected water, but the team overcame this by using a salt stabilizer, reducing harmful salt leakage to concentrations well below safety limits for ground water.
While one panel might not produce enough water to sustain an entire household, it doesn’t take up much space, which means multiple panels could be set up for a single household. The scientists estimate that eight panels could be enough to supply a household in places where there isn’t easy access to safe drinking pared to the costs of bottled water, the device could pay for itself in less than a month and last at least one year.
The new water harvester is a major step towards providing safe, accessible drinking water for people across the globe, and works wherever you may find water vapor in the air. The team plans to test the panels in more resource-limited environments to learn more about the device’s performance under different conditions.

Osteoarthritis, a chronic joint disorder affecting more than 500 million people globally, is the leading cause of disability among older adults. For millions, monitoring disease progression has long relied on periodic X-rays and subjective symptom assessments, which provide limited visibility into future worsening. This unmet medical need has created an urgent demand for tools that can accurately predict future joint damage.
Given this pressing need, David Butler, the study’ lead author, explained: “Our system not only predicts the likelihood of your knee getting worse, it also shows you a realistic image of what the knee could look like in a year. Seeing the past and future X-rays side by side is a powerful motivator. It helps doctors act sooner and gives patients a clearer picture of why sticking to their treatment plan or lifestyle changes matters.”
The new system uses an advanced diffusion model to create a “future” X-ray, identifying 16 key joint points to highlight potential changes. This enhances transparency by showing clinicians exactly which parts of the knee are being monitored, boosting confidence in its predictions.
