At 76 years old, Zhang Guohui is not a man who spends his days in quiet retirement. Instead, his hands, rough and work-worn from sixty years of labor, continue to shape wood into floating history. He is one of the last living masters of the ancient art of building traditional Chinese sailing ships using “watertight-bulkhead” technology. This method was so important that it was once a carefully kept secret of Chinese shipbuilders. Today, it is recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
Zhang’s journey began at the young age of 16, when he first started learning at a shipyard in Quanzhou. Long ago, Quanzhou was the starting point of the Maritime (adj. 海的) Silk Road. In those days, building a wooden ship was a huge task that required the whole community’s help and the master’s deep knowledge of the sea. “You don’t just follow a drawing,” Zhang explains in his local way of speaking. “You have to feel the wood, understand its lines, and know how it will bend to the power of the waves.” The watertight-bulkhead method divides the ship’s body into several separate parts. This was a wonderful invention of ancient engineering. If one part of the ship was broken, it would not sink.
Today, the loud noise of motor boats has long replaced the rhythmic sound of hammers in Quanzhou Bay. People no longer need large wooden sailing ships. However, Zhang’s love for his craft has not faded; it has only found a new direction. He now spends his time creating beautiful, small-scale models of the very ships he once helped build. His workshop has become a place full of maritime history, filled with careful copies of Fujian trading ships. Each model has working doors and perfectly fitted wooden pieces. “The size has changed,” he says, carefully painting a tiny rudder (n. 舵) , “but the heart, the skill, the spirit. It’s all the same.” For Zhang Guohui, these models are not just objects, they are carriers of an old tradition moving into the future. They show a lifetime of hard work dedicated to making sure that the wisdom of the past is not lost to the passing of time.

Everyone knows walking is good for you, and many of us count our daily steps. But is it better to take a longer walk than a comparable number of steps spread across the day A recent multinational study reveals that walking in longer continuous sessions provides greater health benefits than accumulating the same number of steps through short bursts throughout the day.
Researchers analyzed data from 33,560 British adults aged 40-79 who averaged less than 8,000 daily steps. Participants were asked to wear an accelerometer for about seven days to establish how much they typically walk. Participants were sorted into four categories according to whether they accumulated most of their steps: under 5 minutes, 5-10 minutes, 10-15 minutes, or over 15 minutes. Scientists found that those who mainly walked in more than 15 minute sessions showed an 83% lower mortality (死亡)risk and 68% lower cardiovascular (心血管的)disease risk compared to those taking less than 5 minutes’ walks.
“We tend to place all the emphasis on the number of steps or the total amount of walking but neglect the crucial role of patterns,” said Emmanuel Stamatakis, one of the researchers, who is director of the University of Sydney’s Mackenzie Wearables Research Hub in Sydney, Australia. “The study shows that even people who are very physically inactive can maximize their heart health benefit by tweaking their walking patterns to walk for longer at a time, ideally for at least 10-15 minutes.”
But the researchers took steps to determine whether better health caused the longer walks rather than vice versa. For instance, they analyzed their findings without including volunteers who were reported fair or poor health, yet results were still “in line with those of our main analyses.”
Aiden Doherty, a professor at the University of Oxford said the study was conducted “by some of the world’s leading physical activity researchers” and introduced a brand new concept, but “the results need to be reproduced in other studies in other countries to see if this might be due to a direct causal relationship rather than a simple connection between factors.”

Considered nature’s engineers, beavers (河狸) build dams across streams to create ponds. They are a key species due to their significant impact on streams, the movement of water, water quality, and the other animals that live there. Beavers can change their environments mainly through dam construction. The effects of these dams can be different in geographical regions, but scientists do not have a clear understanding of how they affect water quality, habitat, and sedimentation (沉积).
“Due to limited study, some research scientists must make decisions on how the conservation, expansion, and reintroduction of beavers can make a difference to their local streams based on findings from ecosystems that are more frequently studied and better understood,” said EPA researcher Ken Fritz.
Ken Fritz, Johnson, Heather Golden, and Brent Johnson, in collaboration with other researchers from Miami University, Ohio, conducted a scientific literature review to better understand how beaver dams influence stream systems across different biogeographical regions. Their paper used 267 peer-reviewed studies to quantify the effects of beaver dams. The literature review found that beaver dams had profound environmental effects. The impacts on stream morphology (形态学) and water movement were similar across geographical regions. Stream health also appeared to improve with beaver conservation.
Specifically, results show that while nitrate and suspended sediments decreased downstream from beaver dams, pollutants like methyl mercury, dissolved organic carbon, and ammonium concentrations increased. Total nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations tended to not be affected by beaver dams. The effects beaver dams have on pollutants vary depending on environmental conditions — like temperature, sunlight, water velocity and depth — that aid in changing and transporting certain pollutants.
On a larger scale, beaver dams slow water flow and increase sedimentation, and most pollutants likely settle out of the water into sediments upstream of the beaver dam. These areas could become zones of high concentration of some harmful pollutants for exposed wildlife.
These findings can be useful for stream conservation and restoration efforts that introduce or protect beavers. Additional studies are needed in dry or cold biomes historically occupied by beavers and in new environments where beaver populations are currently expanding.
