5. In the summer of 1905, this outspoken young man was rocking his one-year-old baby __________ he was suddenly inspired.

had been destroyed
7. This blue mould was in fact the natural form of penicillin, __________ Fleming perceived could be used to kill bacteria.
which
连接主句和定语从句(指代先行词 penicillin);
在宾语从句中充当主语(即宾语从句的主语是 which = penicillin)
动词 perceived 后本应接一个完整宾语从句:that penicillin could be used...
(1)宾语从句嵌套在定语从句中;
8. With computers __________ (talk) to one another, it would enable government leaders to communicate with each other.

11. There is no doubt about it. Without the breakthroughs of these pioneers in science and technology, whether lucky __________ planned, the world as we know it today would be a completely different place.
or
There is/was no doubt about/ that…

Without the breakthroughs of these pioneers in science and technology,whether lucky or planned,the world as we know it today would be a completely different place.(P53,Para.7)
Without the breakthroughs of these pioneers in science and technology,whether lucky or planned,the world as we know it today would be a completely different place.(P53,Para.7)
without引导含蓄虚拟条件句,表示对过去、现在或将来的虚拟;
whether lucky or planned是状语从句的省略结构,
省略了the breakthroughs are;
as we know it today是定语从句,修饰先行词the world。
(1) without...“如果没有……”;
(2) but for...“要不是……”;
