Using Your Eyes as if Tomorrow You Would Be Blind
(A summary of Helen Keller’s Three Days to See)
Recently, Helen Keller asked a seeing friend who had just walked in the woods what she had noticed. “Nothing special,” the friend replied.
“How was it possible to walk through the woods and see nothing special ” Helen Keller asked herself. Helen Keller, who could not see, found hundreds of things interesting only through touches. If she could get so much happiness from touches, how much more beauty must be found by sight And she had imagined what she should most like to see if she were given the use of her eyes for just three days.
On the first day, she should want to see the people who read books to her. In the afternoon, she should take a walk in the woods. That night, she should not be able to sleep.
On her second day, she should go to the museums to see man’s progress. She should try to explore the spirit of a man through his art. In the evening, she should spend at the theatre.
The following day, she should spend in the world of common people going about the business of life.
Helen Keller, who was blind, could give one suggestion to those who can see: “Use your eyes as if tomorrow you would be blind. The same is true of other senses. Hear the songs of birds, as if you would be deaf tomorrow. Smell the flowers, as if tomorrow you could never smell again ... But of all the senses, I’m sure that sight must be the most pleasant.”
