A South Florida scientist is challenging traditional views of what a scientist should look like and gaining wide online attention. Jordon King, a microbiologist and science communicator, has drawn growing interest in his research in Everglades National Park, where he studies one of the ecosystem’s most vital yet least understood components: floc.
Floc, a loose, organic material found in wetland soils, can reveal environmental changes over time, particularly those caused by human activities like freshwater restoration. Floc may not sound exciting, but it is critical to the ecosystem. Unlike compact soil, floc helps form soil deposits, which supports steady plant growth. Over the past year, King has collected more than 200 soil samples for his research. His dedication earned him a master’s degree from Florida International University — though the journey was far from easy. He reached out to about 40 professors before getting a positive response to move his work forward.
King later began sharing his work on social media, posting videos from the Everglades and breaking down complex science in an engaging, accessible way. What started as a casual idea quickly caught on, with viewers drawn to both his passion and his genuineness.

Recent research suggests that actors may be able to hide their everyday self when they take on a new character.
Researchers worked with Flute Theatre, which creates and provides interactive productions of Shakespeare for autistic (患自闭症的) individuals and their families. The team used wearable brain imaging technologies, alongside measurement devices, to evaluate the brain activity of actors as they played scenes from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Lead author Dwaynica Greaves said, “The shout of a person’s own name is a powerful sound that normally makes the person turn his or her head. However, our findings suggest that actors may learn to suppress their sense of self as they train in the theatre and take on a different character.” The findings showed that when the actors heard their own names during the performance, their response was prevented in the left anterior prefrontal cortex of the brain, which is usually associated with self-awareness.
The researchers also found that during the play, there were similar activity patterns in the brains of paired actors who were working together. These areas are associated with social interaction. The effects were specific to the brain data and were not seen in the heartbeat or breathing data, showing that there are specific brain systems functioning together effectively during complex social interactions.
Greaves said, “Our findings indicate that working together with the theatre industry could be helpful in producing theories about social interaction that could also be investigated in the real world. Our lab will continue to investigate the effects of theatrical training on an actor’s sense of self in the hope that young people, including those with autism, can learn new social skills by taking part in theatre activities.”
Artistic Director of Flute Theatre, Kelly Hunter, said, “The scientific recognition that our physiological selves respond when we hear our names deepened my understanding of the drama games I play with autistic individuals. And I have further developed the way I use the names of the autistic participants within our performances. When people talk about AI today, they’re usually referring to generative AI, a type of AI system that can generate writing, images, videos and computer code.
AI systems essentially operate as gigantic (巨大的) pattern-analyzing prediction machines. To create AI chatbots’ impressive language capabilities, scientists and engineers have fed practically all the text on the Internet into a type of computer system designed to identify predictable patterns in human language.
When you ask a chatbot to do something (also called giving it a prompt), it draws on the original data and patterns within its datasets to predict what words could come next to deliver a logical answer in sentence form. It doesn’t know, but it’s really good at guessing and mimicking how humans talk.
There has been increasing debate within the scientific community about whether we should categorize what AI does as “thinking”. Research has shown that some AI chatbots behave in ways that resemble thinking or judgment. But while we know how AI models work overall, we can’t currently trace the internal decisions they make to arrive at each specific response.
“The questions about consciousness are infamously hard,” said Vincent Conitzer, a professor of computer science and philosophy at Oxford and Carnegie Mellon universities. “We really need to make progress on them if we truly want to understand in what ways we can say AI thinks.” But it’s safe to say that right now, AI is not like the sentient superintelligence you’ve seen in movies.

W: Good morning, everyone. Thank you for joining me today. I want to update you on some important changes at our school that will impact your children. Firstly, our school campus has buildings from different eras.
Oakwood House, the oldest, was originally built a hundred years ago as a private home, but it became part of the school when we opened 60 years ago. As our community has grown, so has our school. I’m excited to announce that we have received approval to expand our facilities. The lower school, currently across the street, will be moved to new buildings on our main campus. The old lower school site will be developed into housing. Construction for the new school buildings is expected to start in the coming months. Another immediate change is our lunch facilities. Our current canteen is too crowded with only one food line. Starting next Monday, we’ll open a new Food Hall with three separate food stations: hot meals, sandwiches, and Asian dishes. To save time, please discuss lunch choices with your kids each morning so they know which station to visit quickly. Thank you for your support as we make these exciting changes!
