In a quiet hillside village on the outskirts of Qingdao, Shandong province, an unlikely group of actors has turned everyday rural life into a hot topic online.

Titled Hua Kai Shi Shang — literally Blooming on the Rocks — the series centers on a young woman who marries into a struggling household that includes three unmarried brothers. Through resilience and ingenuity, she gradually helps the family overcome hardship to build a happier life.
The micro-drama series was initially aimed at helping the village sell local produce, such as chestnuts and sweet potatoes. Ding Zhaoting, a local who has experience developing social media accounts and livestream sales for farmers, realized that a typical promotional account might struggle to gain traction (关注) in a village with mostly older residents. Instead, he proposed telling rural stories with the villagers playing themselves.
The sudden popularity also put Beiliangjia on the map. Viewers flooded online comment sections, asking where they could buy the chestnuts, wild mushrooms and other produce featured in the series.

Several years ago, standing outside a cabin in Michigan, I looked up at the night sky. Thousands of stars filled the sky, and the Milky Way unfurled (展开) across it. The sight almost made me, a nonbeliever, offer a word of gratitude — perhaps to Johan Ekl f, author of The Darkness Manifesto.
Ekl f, a bat scientist in Sweden, requires absolute darkness for his work. But this darkness is threatened. In the 1980s, two-thirds of churches in southwest Sweden housed bat colonies. Today, that number has declined by a third due to light pollution. “We are blasting ourselves with light,” he writes.
We have all noticed empty places floodlit at night. Inhabitants of Hong Kong live beneath a night sky 1,200 times brighter than an unlit sky. Citizens of some large cities have never allowed their eyes to adapt to true night vision, which takes half an hour of complete darkness.
The effects on wildlife are equally alarming. A third of vertebrates (脊椎动物) and two-thirds of invertebrates are active at night. Excess light scares away bats, stuns light-sensitive moths, and makes them easy targets for predators. Newly hatched turtles crawl away from shorelines toward distant city lights. Corals no longer mate on schedule, reef fish eggs go unhatched, and birds forget to sing or migrate on time.
Ekl f’s excellent book shaped my thinking. I found myself sharing its insights with my children at the dinner table, repeatedly asking, “Yes, but did you know ” I can think of no better praise than that. However, the author acknowledges that darkness is not safe for everyone. We must address the social issues that make lighted places appealing in the first place.
Some solutions to light pollution are within our grasp: motion-detecting lights, shielded lights that do not reflect upward, and artificial light that mimics natural wavelengths. “We could just turn it all off, but I guess we don’t want to,” Ekl f said. “So it’s vital we find a middle way.”
In 50 years, every city might be lit by environmentally low-impact LED lights — or we might have completely forgotten what darkness is, the sky filled with little moons.

The United States contribution to coastal plastic pollution worldwide is significantly larger than previously thought, possibly by as much as five times, according to a study published Friday.
According to the research, published in Science Advances, two factors contributed to the sharp increase: Americans are using more plastic than ever and the current study included pollution produced by United States exports of plastic waste, while the earlier one did not.
The United States, which does not have sufficient infrastructure (基础建设) to handle its recycling demands at home, exports about half of its recyclable waste. Of the total exported, about 88 percent ends up in countries considered to have inadequate waste management.
“When you consider how much of our plastic waste isn’t actually recyclable because it is low-value, polluted or difficult to process, it’s not surprising that a lot of it ends up polluting the environment,” said the study’s lead author, Kara Lavender Law, research professor of oceanography at Sea Education Association, in a statement.
The study estimates that in 2024, the United States contributed between 2.1 and 3.6 million tons of plastic waste to the oceans through a combination of littering, dumping and mismanaged exports.
At a minimum, that’s almost double the total estimated waste in the team’s previous study. At the high end, it would be a fivefold increase over the earlier estimate.
The ranges are wide partly because “there’s no real standard for being able to provide good quality data on collection and disposal of waste in general,” said Ted Siegler, a resource economist at DSM Environmental Solutions, a consulting firm, and an author of the study.
Mr. Siegler said the researchers had evaluated waste-disposal practices in countries around the world and used their “best professional judgment” to determine the lowest and highest amounts of plastic waste likely to escape into the environment. They settled on a range of 25 percent to 75 percent.
Tony Walker, an associate professor at the Dalhousie University School for Resource and Environmental Studies in Halifax, Nova Scotia, said that analyzing waste data can amount to a “data minefield (危机四伏的局面)” because there are no data standards across municipalities. Moreover, once plastic waste is shipped overseas, he said, data is often not recorded at all.
Nonetheless, Dr. Walker, who was not involved in the study, said it could offer a more accurate accounting of plastic pollution than the previous study, which likely underestimated the United States’ contribution. “They’ve put their best estimate, as accurate as they can be with this data,” he said, and used ranges, which underscores that the figures are estimates.
