America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon. They don’t feel hurt. If the same two people meet again, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand. Friendships between us develop more slowly but may become deep feelings between both families.
There is another difficult point for us to understand. Although Americans treat friends warmly in their personal everyday lives, they are not so polite to others if it needs lots of time. But in China, we are usually generous (慷慨的) with our time. We, as hosts, will appear at a train station even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off from our work to act as guides for our friends. It is different in America. Americans cannot manage the time to be with a friend outside their daily plans. They will probably expect the friends to get themselves from the train stations to the hotels. And they expect the friends will phone them from there. Once the friends arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real.
Americans often think it is friendlier to invite a friend to their homes than to restaurants, except for work. Americans are ready to receive friends at their homes, share their holidays and their home lives. So accept their hospitality (好客) at home and enjoy your visit in America!

Have you ever wondered what makes people happy What’s the secret Is it money, good health, loving relationships, owning the latest mobile phones or simply chocolate
The latest World Happiness Report says that money is not the key to happiness. Happiness depends more on the things you have rather than getting more things. Money can buy things like mobile phones, but the happiness it brings is often short-lasting.
The report also says real happiness comes from intangible (无形的) things. One important thing is human relationships. People who get along well with family and friends often feel happier. Performing acts of kindness also makes you happy. For example, helping a friend in need or carrying a neighbor’s shopping bag will make you feel on top of the world.
It’s not surprising that health is another key to happiness. A healthy diet (日常饮食) is important, and so is regular exercise. Exercising for twenty to thirty minutes a day helps you reduce stress and makes you feel more positive.
Sleep also affects happiness. If you don’t get enough sleep, you will be tired and in a bad mood (心情). Besides, tiredness affects your ability to focus on studies and may slow your growth. So if you want to be happy and do well at school, try to sleep at least eight hours a night.
Now you know the theory (理论). It’s time to put it all into practice.

Water is one of the most useful things on Earth. It gives us life. We think water is something soft and gentle, but sometimes water is so powerful that it can even be destructive (破坏性的). Here we talk about floods.
There are two main kinds of floods: flash floods and slow floods. Flash floods are sudden floods of great volumes (大量) of water. They overflow (溢出) the banks of the rivers and wash away everything they touch into pieces. Flash floods are destructive. The other type is slow floods. They rise over a long period of time. Usually as more and more rain falls, the water in rivers rises and floods the land. These slow floods happen in every country in the world.
Floods are one of the world’s biggest natural killers. When floods happen, crops are damaged, houses are washed away, roads are destroyed, and people are killed. Every year in America water kills over 100 people, most in flash floods. Floods also cause huge economic (经济的) losses.
Floods are a serious problem. Worse still, they may become more powerful and happen more often as global warming becomes more and more serious. Around the world, sea levels will rise, and more lives will be taken by the flood waters of our planet.
Floods are a serious natural disaster and we must try to stop them from happening often to save our lives and homes.

When you practise reading, you are not only repeating the words on the page, but also improving your reading abilities, learning and using background knowledge and learning new vocabulary, etc. While reading, you will learn around one new word for every 1,000 words you read.
We did a survey about reading times among 300 students. The diagram (图表) shows the results of the survey.
According to the survey, there is a huge difference between the number of words learned by students who read for less than 15 minutes daily and those who read for 30+ minutes every day. Unfortunately, the study also shows that the students who read for half an hour or more daily take up less than 20% of the total—about 50% of students read less than 15 minutes.
Reading is important. We’d better read more books in our free time. The more time we spend on it, the more we will get.
49. What do students do when they are reading
①Practise reading abilities. ②Remember the article. ③Repeat the words.
④Use background knowledge. ⑤Learn new words.
A.①②③④ B.①③④⑤ C.①②④⑤ D.②③④⑤

Is the summer vacation long enough to turn life for the better Every person has his own talents and interests. Find something you care about, and you will see the difference.
Organise a clean-up programme. You could pick up the rubbish with your friends once a week in your neighbourhood. You could also help take care of the plants every few days. The environment will become better if someone volunteers to help. Surely, a clean and tidy neighbourhood will be worth the work.
Show your love to the old. Our city has some old people’s homes. Without children around them, the old people there might feel lonely once in a while. Maybe they need your help. In fact, you can do a lot for them. For example, you can talk with them or play games with them. Listening to them carefully is also a good idea. Some old people can’t see clearly and they would like you to read to them. No matter what small things you do, you can make them feel loved.
