Plunk!I dropped another pecan (山核桃) into my basket. Then a gentle autumn wind blew some more off the tree.I ran to pick them up.Whew!Pecan picking was hard.My basket was only half full.
I was visiting my grandpa's farm in Kansas, and Grandpa sent me into the woods to pick up pecans for us to enjoy later.I wasn't about to let him down.
Then something caught my eye:a squirrel picked up a pecan, climbed up a tree and disappeared into a large hole.A moment later, the squirrel climbed down to the ground to pick another pecan.Once again,he took the pecan back to his secret hiding place inside the hollow (洞) of the tree.
Not so secret anymore,I thought.I ran over to the tree and found the hollow was filled with sweet pecans. They were right there for the taking. This was my chance.Handful by handful,I took all the pecans from the hollow. Now the basket was full!
I was so proud of myself.I couldn't wait to show Grandpa all of the pecans I'd collected.
"Look,Grandpa," I shouted, "look at all of the pecans I found!"
Grandpa took a look at my basket. "Well, well, how did you find so many,Jimmy?" I told him how I'd followed the squirrel and taken the pecans from his hiding place.Grandpa congratulated me on finding out something about the squirrel's habits. Then he did something that surprised me.He handed the basket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders.
"That squirrel worked very hard to collect his winter food," he said. "Now that all of his pecans are gone, don't you think that little squirrel will be very hungry when it gets cold?"
"I didn't think about that," I said.
"I know," Grandpa said. "But a good man should never take advantage of someone else's hard work, even the squirrel's."
Suddenly I felt as hollow as that old tree. The image (形象) of that hungry squirrel wouldn't leave my mind. There was only one thing I could do.

If you argue with your friend, will you forgive (原谅) him or her? Most people are more likely to forgive others.Scientists from famous universities like Yale and Oxford studied this. They discovered that most people usually believe others are good deep down, even after they do something wrong. And when these "bad people" do something nice later, people will probably let go of their past mistakes and have a positive opinion of them.
To test this idea, scientists did an experiment. They asked over 1,500 people to watch two strangers. These strangers could get money if they shocked (电击) another person with electricity. The "good" stranger refused the deal and the "bad" one accepted it.
The watchers were then asked to judge (评价) the strangers based on their decisions. They reported having a positive feeling of the "good"stranger. But they were not confident that the "bad" stranger was truly bad.If they then saw the bad person do something good, they were more likely to have a better opinion of him or her.
The researchers believe that it is human nature to see the best in others. Most people are more likely to believe someone is innocent (无辜的),rather than guilty. For example,if a classroom window is broken and your friend was the only one nearby, you might say "Maybe it was an accident." rather than blaming him, "You broke it!"
It's important to forgive and believe in people, because it helps us build and keep healthy social relationships.Think about it:sometimes people make mistakes or act badly by accident. If we immediately judge them unkindly and end the relationship,we might be wrong. What if we later find out they are actually a kind person who just had a bad day?We could lose a valuable friend or partner.Being open to forgiveness gives people a second chance and helps us keep important relationships.
24.How did the watchers feel about the "bad" stranger after the experiment? ______
A. They had no idea why the stranger did the bad thing.
B. They weren't sure if the stranger was bad deep down.
C. They had a strong feeling that the stranger was bad.
D. They disliked the bad stranger but liked the good one.
25.What can we learn from the passage? ______
A. People's trust may change because of other's new actions.
B. Being open to forgiveness helps us to accept mistakes.
C. People should forgive if others didn't mean to harm.
D. People naturally choose to believe in others' goodness.
26.Which of the following best matches the study results? ______
A. If a friend lies to you,you will never speak to him again.
B. If a friend breaks your toy but later fixes it,you can forgive him.
C. If a friend refuses to help you,you won't help him the next time.
D. If a friend breaks your trust, you will never believe their words.
D
Are you a good receiver? It might sound like a funny question but it is an important one that each of us should ask ourselves.
Strangely, most of us are better givers than receivers. We give to our family, our friends and even charities, and opposite to what we might think, most of us are actually very good at giving. But receiving is another matter. We often feel a little uneasy when receiving, although it is not very noticeable.Even praise gets deflected(转向) when it comes our way. When someone praises us for helping him move or clean up the house,we will possibly say, "Ah,it was nothing." When someone praises the coat we are wearing,we may mention how we bought it at a discount instead of simply enjoying the praise.Actually, the praise is a gift to us,and when we don't receive it properly,we are dishonoring the giver.
Giving is easy,as there is much pleasure in giving, but receiving is an art that takes practice. To be a good receiver requires a sense of close relationship with the giver. It is always a pleasure for a giver to see the gift received in a pleasant way.And this is also the best way for a receiver to honor the giver and give him something back.
Many relationships are not so good not because people are not giving to each other, but because they are not receiving from each other well.We should receive the love, respect the praise, and give thanks every time giving happens. We should practice receiving all the pleasures that happen to us every day, instead of taking them for granted.Think of how many simple everyday gifts we are being given all the time:the beauty of nature, art and inspiring(激励人的)conversations. But are we truly receiving them when they happen to us,or are we busy with other matters, not noticing? We should master the art of receiving:accept the gifts life offers us and show our appreciation for them.
We are taught that it is better to give than to receive. But this suggests that there is something wrong with receiving. There is nothing wrong with receiving. It is better to give and receive.Let life shower us with gifts, pleasures, joys, surprises, both large and small, and let us take notice of all these things and accept them happily and thankfully. The more we can receive, the more we can give back, but giving more does not necessarily mean receiving more.We must remember it is harder to receive than to give, and try to practice receiving. This practice will benefit us greatly, making us become good receivers as well as good givers.
27.According to Paragraph 2,what do we possibly do when we are praised?______
A. Honor the giver publicly.
B. Show our pleasure clearly.
C. Receive the praise uncomfortably.
D. Express our disagreement properly.
28.The expression "taking them for granted" probably means "______ ".
A. looking for them with expectation
B. depending on them with satisfaction
C. getting away from them without regret
D. benefiting from them without appreciation
29.What can we learn from the passage?______
A. People usually can receive more by giving more.
B. People usually try to receive as much as possible.
C. People should give a gift back when receiving one.
D. People can improve relationships by receiving well.
30.What is the best title for the passage?______
A. Be a Good Receiver and Giver
B. Better to Give Than to Receive
C. Better to Give,Better to Receive
D. Be a Receiver Rather Than a Giver

31.Shanghai has just opened its first"forest library"to the public. It has caught much attention from book lovers and people who like nature.Unlike traditional indoor libraries, the"forest library"is special because it is built to keep the forest as it is—every tree, bush(灌木) and green area stays natural.
The library is called Read & Joy Forest. It locates(位于) in a green space next to Shanghai Library East.It covers 20,546 square meters and is fully open-air.There are rows of strong wooden benches (长凳) for readers to sit comfortably.A small information desk with volunteers is there to help visitors.Green areas are connected by winding(蜿蜒的) wooden walkways that fit well with nature. The forest has many kinds of trees, like tall pine(松树) trees and leafy maple (枫树) trees .This way, visitors can walk slowly through the quiet, green forest and also get a rare(难得的) chance to relax with a book while hearing birds sing and leaves move.
People love reading here.Wang Xiaohua, said,"I love the fresh air and the way sunlight comes through the trees.Being around nature calms me down.So I'll come back every weekend for sure."Another reader added,"I worked indoors all morning, looking at a screen. So I came here to breathe fresh air.The smell of pine and soil is so relaxing. It's the perfect place to slow down and enjoy a good book."
Young adults visit the"forest library"most because they want a quiet place away from city life. When they are not reading, many walk slowly along the wooden paths. They sometimes stop to enjoy the trees or listen to the forest sound. So the"forest library"is not just for reading—it's also a peaceful place to relax both mind and body.
