For centuries sailors have told amazing stories of “milky seas”. Imagine sailing at night when suddenly the
entire ocean turns bright white. It produces a steady light and glows like a field of heavy snow. It is so large that it
can be seen even from space! Sailors also report that the ocean becomes strangely calm during these events.
For a long time, it was a mystery between myth and science. It is so rare that there is only one known
photograph of it, taken in 2019. Now, by creating a database from old sailor reports and modern satellite pictures,
scientists have become detectives and managed to study the situation.
Scientists believe the primary source of the light is billions of tiny bacteria in the water. This is different from
the quick and sudden bright light of plankton (浮游生物). According to their study, the glowing bacteria might live
with a type of algae (藻类) that creates calming slime (黏液) on the surface of water.
Their detective work also discovered other fascinating details. For example, milky seas are not just small
patches of light. They can be very huge, sometimes covering an area larger than a state. Besides, their appearance
may be connected to climate patterns like La Ni a, which bring nutrient-rich waters to the surface, feeding the
bacteria.
Yet, for all its beauty, this impressive scene might hold a darker meaning. The bacteria thought to cause milky
seas is also a known “killer” of some fish. As the scientists note, if these milky seas become more common, it could
be a very clear warning sign from the ocean itself.
11. What is the ocean like when there is a milky sea
A. The water suddenly becomes cooler. B. The water is unusually thick and still.
C. The water changes into ice overnight. D. The water becomes very clear quickly.
12. Why was it so difficult for scientists to study milky seas directly
A. The glowing area was dangerous to come close. B. Satellites couldn’t take clear pictures of the ocean.
C. They were believed to be myths made up by sailors. D. The events were very uncommon and unpredictable.
13. Where does the light in a milky sea come from
A. Calming slime. B. Glowing algae. C. Glowing bacteria. D. Shining plankton.

In the dry deserts in northwest China, something amazing is happening. Land that was once covered in sand
and almost lifeless now has rows of shiny black solar panels (太阳能板) stretching as far as the eye can see. These
are not just solar panels—they are part of China’s plan to turn deserts into energy factories.
In Inner Mongolia, a project called the Solar Great Wall covers a large area of desert. It aims to produce
enough electricity to light up several major cities in eastern China by 2030. But these panels turn out to do more
than producing power. The shadow they provide has slowed down water evaporation, allowing plants like grass to
grow in the desert. Over the past five years, the area that was 98% sand now has up to 80% plant coverage. This not
only stops sandstorms but also creates habitats for animals like goats and birds.
Meanwhile, in the high mountains of Qinghai, herders (牧民) also benefit from solar panels. Standing 1.2
metres high, they act like huge umbrellas. The shadow they provide protects the sheep from the burning heat in
summer, while the space under the panels grows fresh grass. This harmonious mixture of traditional herding and
modern technology allows herders to sell wool and electricity as well, with many nearly doubling their income.
This success is not just local. Chinese companies are sharing their ideas worldwide. In Argentina, a solar farm
built with China’s help now provides power for 100,000 homes and brings in money for local farmers. In Saudi
Arabia, plans are in progress to build solar farms in deserts using methods developed in China. Even African
nations like Namibia are practicing Chinese solar technology to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels like coal
and oil.
From deserts to farms, China’s solar revolution offers a possibility of sustainable (可持续的) development. As
the sun sets over the Gobi Desert, the panels continue their quiet work—a reminder that the future of energy might
just be written in sunlight and sand.
16. How does the author introduce the topic
A. By telling a story. B. By giving a definition. C. By listing numbers. D. By describing a scene.
17. What is the purpose of the Solar Great Wall
第 3 页/共 14 页

A. Herders there have earned more money than before.
B. Grass under the panels has grown to 1.2 metres high.
C. The sheep have got more sunshine in high mountains.
D. The production of wool has nearly doubled in the area.
19. Why does the author mention China’s help to other countries in paragraph 4
A. To criticize the use of fossil fuels worldwide. B. To doubt the effectiveness of the local success.

From a baby to an adult we go through a process of learning to behave in ways acceptable to the society—
often referred to as “socialization” or “social skills”. Without these skills, forming meaningful relationships can be
challenging. In recent years, Chinese social media has seen growing discussions about socialization. Many young
people express worry over what they see as their own “lack of socialization.” Using this term, they describe
feelings of embarrassment and uncertainty in social situations.
One major reason often mentioned is exam-focused education, which is believed to lead students to value
grades over everything else. As a result, many young adults feel unprepared for real-world social situations. Some
even feel like children “pretending to be adults,” struggling to deal with a complex social environment.
Yan Yunxiang, a social science expert, has introduced the concept of “extended youth”, suggesting that many
people today choose to delay taking on adult roles due to related burdens and risks. This “refusal to grow up”
deepens the feelings of social inadequacy, which makes young people feel less confident in fitting into the rea l
world.
Researchers also point to digital communication as another possible reason. Younger generations spend more
time interacting through screens rather than in person. While online interaction has its place, it cannot fully replace
face-to-face contact. A well-known study by Albert Mehrabian has found that 7% of communication is based o n
第 4 页/共 14 页
words, 38% through tone and voice, and 55% through body language. That means when we communicate through
calls or texts, we may not fully understand others.
The good news is that it’s never too late to improve your social skills. Make a conscious effort to join in more
real-world conversations and practice active listening. Through regular interaction, you can level up skills such as
reading nonverbal (非言语的) clues and guiding a conversation smoothly. These experiences can help you better
understand the unwritten rules of socializing.
21. According to paragraph 1, which situation shows a “lack of socialization”
A. Feeling proud when praised by others. B. Feeling excited when meeting friends.
C. Feeling afraid when talking to strangers. D. Feeling regretful when making mistakes.
22. What is one main reason for young people’s social anxiety
A. The burdens and risks of modern adult life. B. A negative attitude to forming relationships.
C. An education system that overvalues results. D. The difficulty in keeping in touch with others.
23. What does “inadequacy” probably mean in paragraph 3
A. Inability. B. Hesitation. C. Loneliness. D. Impatience.
24. What does Albert Mehrabian’s study show
A. Telephone calls can replace text- based messages. B. Much information is missing in online interaction.
C. Tone of voice is more effective than body language. D. The words we use are not so important for meaning.
25. What is the author’s attitude towards a “lack of socialization”
A. It is difficult to improve social skills after childhood.
B. It is important to reduce unwritten rules in social life.
C. It is common in society and will be changed naturally.
D. It is manageable and can be improved through practice.

Dear fellow students,
As we all know, safety is very important in our daily life. Firstly, eat a balanced diet and avoid junk food to
stay healthy. Always check expiration dates on food, which prevents food poisoning. Healthy eating provides a
solid foundation for our study and life. Secondly, when exercising, warm up first and wear protective gear like
helmets. This helps prevent injuries. After exercising, don’t take a cold shower immediately to avoid catching a
cold. Thirdly, follow traffic rules: never run across roads and pay full attention when walking. Using phones while
walking may cause accidents.
Let’s work together to make safety a habit! Remember: protecting ourselves is protecting our future.
