Walking through a forest after a big fire is a heartbreaking experience for anyone who loves nature. For Marta Bernardino and Sebasti o Mendon a, seeing Portugal’s burnt forests encouraged them to take action. Since 2000, large wildfires have destroyed nearly half of Portugal’s forests. Most of these forest areas lie on steep slopes (陡坡), making it almost impossible for people to climb up and plant new trees safely.
To solve this problem, the two 19-year-old high school students turned to technology. In 2023, they invented Trovador, a tree-planting robot. They made the first robot with recycled materials and it cost only $17. Although they had little money, the robot worked well. It could plant saplings (树苗) 28% faster than humans, and 90% of the trees it planted grew successfully.
Now Trovador is being upgraded (升级) into a high-tech dog-shaped robot. The two teenagers got $10,000 from National Geographic to perfect their design. The new robot is made of lightweight materials, so it will not destroy the soil that has been weakened by fires. Besides, it will be fitted with cameras and sensors (传感器) to help it climb steep hills safely.
The biggest advantage of the new robot is its artificial intelligence (AI), which is used to check soil conditions and find the best places to plant trees. With a GPS system, it can plant up to 200 trees in just one hour. What’s more, people will even use an app to regrow a forest—just choose an area on the map, and the robot does the rest. Trovador is expected to be put into use by the end of 2026, and Portugal’s green hills will come back little by little in the near future.
56. Why is it hard for humans to plant trees in Portugal’s burnt forests
A.The weather is too hot and wet. B.Most areas are on steep slopes.
C.There are not enough saplings. D.The soil is too hard to plant trees.
57. What can we know about the first Trovador robot
A.It cost as much as 10,000 dollars. B.It could plant 200 trees per hour.
C.It was made of new expensive materials. D.It worked better than humans in some ways.
58. The teenagers are using lightweight materials for the new robot dog to ________.
A.protect the weak soil B.make the robot move quickly
C.save the money they received D.leave more space for cameras and sensors
59. What can the new robot do with its AI system
A.It can repair weak soil quickly. B.It can find the best places to plant trees.
C.It can help people design mobile apps. D.It can stop wildfires from spreading.
60. What does the development of Trovador show us
A.AI is the best way to prevent all forest fire.
B.The success of a project depends on having a large team.
C.Technology becomes smarter when it gets more expensive.
D.A simple idea can grow into a high-tech solution for nature.
第二节 任务型阅读(每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
Cai Gao is a Chinese painter and illustrator (插画家). She doesn’t only work at her desk. She spends a lot of time in her rooftop garden in Hunan. There, many of her ideas come to life. She has grown roses, hydrangeas and many other plants for twenty years. Almost every morning, she walks through the colorful garden and greets the sunrise. She watches everything in her garden with childlike curiosity. When her daughter asks her to go on a trip, she often hesitates (犹豫). “Who will take care of my ‘friends’ if I am away for so long ”
But Cai’s garden lies not just on the rooftop. The camphor trees in her neighborhood also receive her love and care. She says that these trees and the wisteria on the rooftop tell stories in different ways. If you listen closely, they always have something to say.
And Cai’s garden is not made up of plants alone. It also holds her childhood memories: rainy days, the alley’s lively sounds, and the simple joys of everyday life she once knew. In Cai’s heart, wherever there was life, there was joy—and a little “garden”.
Year after year, she keeps her inner child alive. She turns what she sees into illustrations, short essays and children’s picture books. She has finished over 40 works. Recently, she won the 2026 Hans Christian Andersen Award for illustration. She thanked the land of China, its folk traditions and every living thing that has inspired her.
