Following your passion (热爱) in life might not always be the popular choice but it is the best choice. This is a belief that David Marnah has instilled (逐渐灌输) in his three sons: Jesse, Francis, and Lord. Living in Ghana, most young boys their ages choose to play football if interested in sports. For these three teens, however, swimming is the best.
David, a football coach, often gets asked why he didn’t encourage his boys to follow his sport of choice. But for this loving father, this choice was an easy one to make — and it all originates from a sincere wish for his children to be themselves.
Having full support from their parents, these 14, 13-, and 11-year-old boys have become quite impressive swimmers. The three of them train as part of the swimming club called GH Dolphins.
While they each love the sport itself, they also have their own reasons for being as passionate as they are about it. Jesse, the oldest, is driven by the idea of making swimming a more popular choice for others in Ghana. Francis, the middle child, dreams of one day traveling to compete with athletes in other countries. For the youngest child, Lord, his love comes from watching his brothers fall in love with the sport.
“I train with the boys every time, and you should see how determined they are,” Bernard Morrison, their swim coach, said, “The boys are talented and have unique individual strengths. They have it in them to succeed, and I am excited to be part of their beginning.”
David is more than happy to cheer them on every step of the way. In fact, he doesn’t hesitate (犹豫) to change his plans in order to make sure he never misses any of their national competitions or training classes. David said, “If they see my presence and know I’m supporting them — I believe it helps them greatly to get over challenges and come out on top.”

“Dad, I’m hungry.”
“Hi, hungry. I’m Dad.”
If you haven’t been asleep for the past 20 years, you’ll probably recognize this exchange as a dad joke. The term “dad joke” is said to have begun with an editorial in the Gettysburg Times on June 20, 1987. Writer Jim Kalbaugh praised fathers’ telling of jokes to their children — or, importantly, to others in front of their children.
The term stayed inactive until the Internet age: The first entry in Urban Dictionary was in 2004 by a contributor named Bunny; it first appeared on Twitter in 2007; joke books were published under the theme starting in 2013 in the U. K. and 2016 in the U. S.; and the Oxford English Dictionary added it to its entry for “dad” in 2014.
As folklorists who study humor, we’re used to looking at what are called joke cycles (循环): jokes that share the same structure (结构) or subject. Elephant jokes and light bulb (电灯泡) jokes are examples of joke cycles. But dad jokes don’t have a unique structure. Nor do they center on a specific subject, like parenting. Besides, dad jokes are not too wild. For these reasons, they don’t involve any kind of risk of offending (冒犯) people.
It might be best to think of the dad joke not as a kind of joke but as a kind of show, one that involves a teller — the dad — and the audience: his kids, friends of his kids, or his wife. Say a family is out to dinner. Over breadsticks, a daughter might say, “Dad, you need a haircut.” Then a dad replies with unexpected words, “I usually get them all cut.” Suddenly, the dad has changed the feel from everyday conversation to joke.
Dad jokes are comfortable jokes for comfortable situations among friends and family. They might cause a little discomfort sometimes, but they finally bring people closer together. They show a dad at his most annoying, but also at his best: warm, silly and loving.
8. What can we learn about the term “dad joke”
A.It spread on social media after 2013.
B.It was less recognized before 2004.
C.It was first used in a book in 1987.
D.It was included in a dictionary in 2016.
9. How do dad jokes differ from elephant jokes and light bulb jokes
A.They hurt listeners sometimes.
B.They aren’t attractive to adults.
C.They deal with special subjects.
D.They don’t follow certain rules.
10. Why did the dad reply with the unexpected words in paragraph 6
A.To cheer his daughter up.
B.To add humor to the dinner.
C.To describe ways to eat breadsticks.
D.To draw his daughter toward funny things.
11. What is the best title for the text
A.Dad jokes: their past and future
B.Dad jokes: their influence on culture
C.Dad jokes: their rise and attraction
D.Dad jokes: their guide to modern humor

The town of Bacoli outside Naples, Italy, was trying to build a children’s playground, but the kids will have to make do with their backyards because surveys uncovered a Roman villa (别墅) in the same place.
About 2,000 years ago, the villa sat high on a cliffside (悬崖边) and had a full view of the Gulf of Naples, with the islands of Ischia and Procida being easy to see in the distance. In fact, the archaeologists digging up the old house think it could have been where Pliny the Elder often stayed.
An author and naturalist, Pliny the Elder wrote the Naturalis Historia which became a publishing model for the encyclopedia (百科全书) in our time. He was also a naval (海军的) officer of the early Roman Empire. Bacoli sits today where the city of Misenum was located, the place where the Roman navy kept their ships in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Pliny the Elder passed away after breathing in the harmful smoke of Mount Vesuvius’ volcanic eruption, which he saw from his villa across the Gulf. He organized several ships to save people who were stuck in the town of Stabiae. Overweight and sick, he couldn’t escape the smoke clouds after arriving at Stabiae with a team to save the people there.
“It’s likely that the big, beautiful villa had a 360-degree view of the Gulf of Naples for important reasons to do with the army,” said Simona Formula, lead archaeologist at Naples’ art heritage. “We believe that digging deeper might show us more rooms, and even paintings on the walls.”
The archaeologists found that the walls were made of stone blocks and put together in a way that looked like a fisherman’s net.
Nowadays, the parts of the villa that were once higher up the cliff are only a few meters above the sea. The whole area is slowly going down into the sea because of earthquakes and volcanic activity over the years, and the place where boats for servicing the villa had parked is now underwater.
The villa is going to open in a few months as an open-air museum.
12. When was the Roman villa found
A.When a naturalist visited a cliffside.
B.When archaeologists surveyed Bacoli.
C.When a kid was digging in his backyard.
D.When Bacoli was about to build a playground.
13. Which of the following can best describe Pliny the Elder
A.Generous and confident.
B.Honest and hard-working.
C.Knowledgeable and brave.
D.Selfless and open-minded.
14. In ancient times, the villa might have been used as a place ________.
A.to hold meetings on wars
B.to watch the Gulf of Naples
C.for naval officers to live
D.for its owner to give parties
15. What can we learn about the villa from paragraph 7
A.It is too ancient to recover.
B.It is of great cultural value.
C.It is in a dangerous situation.
D.It has its environment polluted.

Eight-year-old Lily was a curious little girl who loved exploring the world around her. One day, Lily’s mother asked her to go to the store to buy some groceries (食品杂货). Excited by the thought of being responsible, Lily happily walked along the streets.
As Lily walked into the store, she noticed a beautiful container of pink candies on the cashier’s desk (收银台). She really wanted to buy them. However, there was one problem—Lily didn’t have enough money to pay for the candies and the groceries her mother had asked her to buy. Then, Lily came up with an idea. She told herself it was just a little white lie and that no one would ever know. She quickly put the candies into her shopping bag and paid for the groceries, hoping that her secret would be safe.
That evening, Lily couldn’t help but feel regretful in her heart. She knew that what she had done wasn’t right, even though it seemed like a harmless little lie at the time. Lily’s conscience (良心)was eating away at her, causing her to lose sleep and feel restless. The next morning, Lily’s mother noticed her daughter’s troubled expression and asked her what was wrong. Lily hesitated for a moment, but then the truth poured out of her mouth like a waterfall.
“Mom, I have something to tell you,” Lily said, tears (眼泪) welling up in her eyes. “I took some candies from the store without paying for them. I’m really sorry.”
Her mother’s face softened, and she pulled Lily into a warm hug (拥抱). “Lily, I am proud of you for telling me the truth,”her mother said gently. ”But it’s important to understand that lying, even about something small, can hurt others and ourselves. Let’s go back to the store and make things right.”

A Green World Starts With us
National Ecology Day reminds us of the importance of green low-carbon economy. It helps cut pollution, protect natural resources and achieve sustainable development for our planet.
To realize this goal, factories should adopt clean production methods. As students, we can live a low-carbon life: choose walking or cycling instead of private cars, save water and electricity, and recycle waste. Small efforts from everyone will create a greener world.
五、读后续写范文
Together, Lily and her mother walked back to the store. Lily held her mother’s hand tightly, feeling nervous and ashamed. They found the cashier, and Lily apologized sincerely for taking candies without payment. Her mom gave the cashier money for the candies and explained Lily’s mistake. The cashier praised Lily for being honest and said it took courage to admit faults. Lily nodded and promised never to hide mistakes again.
From that day forward, Lily understood the importance of telling the truth. She realized hiding wrongdoings would only bring inner guilt and trouble, while honesty could earn respect and fix mistakes. Whenever she faced small temptations later, she would remember this lesson. She always chose to be honest, and this good quality won her trust from family, teachers and friends.
