Last summer, a terrible flood hit our village. It started raining heavily on Friday night, and the rain didn’t stop for two days. By Sunday morning, the water had covered most of the houses. My family and I had to climb to the roof of our house to stay safe.
We could see people in trouble everywhere. Some were stuck in their cars, and others were crying for help. Just then, we heard the sound of a boat. It was a group of volunteers from the nearby town. They came to rescue us. They took us to a safe place, a school on high ground.
At the school, there were many other people. The volunteers gave us food, blankets and hot drinks. We stayed there for three days until the water went down. During those days, I learned how important it is to help each other in a disaster. The volunteers were so brave, and they didn’t stop working even when they were tired.
Now, when it rains heavily, we always get ready quickly. We keep an emergency kit at home with food, water and a flashlight. We also know where to go if there’s a flood again.

Earthquakes are one of the most dangerous natural disasters. They can happen suddenly and cause a lot of damage. So it’s important to know what to do when an earthquake hits.
If you are indoors, stay there. Don’t run outside, because falling glass or bricks can hurt you. Hide under a strong desk or table. If there’s no desk around, stand in a corner of the room. Stay away from windows, mirrors and tall furniture.
If you are outdoors, move to an open area like a playground. Stay away from buildings, trees and power lines. Don’t stand under a bridge or overpass.
After the earthquake stops, be careful. There may be aftershocks, which are smaller earthquakes. Don’t go back into your house right away. Check if there’s any damage first. If you smell gas, turn off the gas line immediately.
If you are trapped under something, don’t panic. Shout or tap on a pipe so that people can find you. Don’t light a match, because there may be gas leaks.
1. What should you do if you are indoors during an earthquake
A. Run outside quickly. B. Hide under a strong desk.
C. Stand near a window. D. Climb onto tall furniture.

B. What causes earthquakes.
C. How to stay safe during and after an earthquake.
D. The history of earthquakes.

Last month, a strong typhoon hit our city. My parents told me that it was going to come, so we prepared a lot of things. We bought enough food and water, and we fixed all the windows with tape. We also moved our plants inside the house.
When the typhoon arrived, the wind was so strong that it made a loud noise. The rain was pouring down, and we could see trees falling outside. We stayed inside the house and watched TV. But suddenly, the power went out. We had to use candles to see.
The typhoon lasted for about 12 hours. When it was over, we went outside. The street was full of fallen trees and broken signs. Our garden was in a mess, but our house was okay. My neighbors’ roof was damaged, so we helped them fix it.
I learned that typhoons are very powerful, but if we prepare well, we can stay safe. Now, I know what to do when a typhoon comes.
