Kung Fu Robots at the Spring Festival Gala
On February 16, 2026, the CCTV Spring Festival Gala (春晚) amazed the world. Dozens of humanoid robots from Unitree Robotics performed kung fu with young martial arts students. The robots did backflips, jumped on trampolines, and used swords and nunchucks. They moved perfectly together with the human performers. The show, called “Cyber Real Kung Fu,” (赛博武术) became a big hit online.
Many people watched videos of the performance. Some felt excited, but others felt a little nervous. One person joked on social media, “Maybe we can ask ChatGPT to stop them if they attack!”
This year’s show was a huge leap from 2025. Last year, the same company’s robots danced a traditional Yangge dance with handkerchiefs. Their movements were stiff and careful. In just one year, they learned to do fast and powerful martial arts moves. “The progress is magical. That’s what we call China speed,” said a professor.
How did the robots get so good The team used AI software to train them. The robots first learned in virtual environments, then practiced in the real world. They also have better sensors and controls now. They can keep balance even after doing backflips.
China is becoming a world leader in robotics (机器人学). Last year, China made 90% of the 13,000 humanoid robots shipped around the world. The kung fu robots at the gala are not just for fun—they show us what the future will look like.
