When I was cleaning out my late grandma’s closet last week, I found a small wooden box. It was locked, but I remembered she once told me the key was under her pillow. I found the key and opened the box carefully. Inside, there were old photos, a silver necklace, and a letter.
The letter was written by my grandma to her younger sister in 1955. It talked about her life in the countryside. She wrote about helping her parents on the farm, playing with her sister by the river, and dreaming of going to the city one day. The photos showed a young girl with a bright smile, standing in front of a small house with a big tree behind it.
I also found a photo of my grandma and me when I was five years old. We were sitting on a bench in the park, eating ice cream. I remembered that day clearly—she bought me my first strawberry ice cream, and I spilled it all over her dress. She just laughed and wiped it off with her handkerchief.
This box was full of memories, not just for my grandma, but for me too. I decided to keep it on my desk, so I could look at it whenever I miss her.

My hometown is a small village in the south of China. When I was a child, there were only a few small houses and dirt roads. There was no supermarket, and we had to walk 5 kilometers to the nearest town to buy things.
Now, great changes have taken place. The dirt roads have been replaced with wide asphalt roads. Many new buildings have been built, including a supermarket, a school, and a hospital. We don’t have to go to the town to buy things anymore—we can get everything we need in the village.
The river near our village used to be dirty and full of rubbish. Now, it has been cleaned up, and people often go fishing or boating there. The trees around the village are greener, and the air is fresher.
Although the village has changed a lot, some things remain the same. The old people still sit under the big tree in the center of the village, chatting and playing chess. The children still run around and play traditional games like hide-and-seek.
I love my hometown. It’s a place where I can find both the old and the new, and it will always be my favorite place in the world.
1. What were the roads like in the writer’s hometown when he was a child
A. Wide asphalt roads. B. Narrow concrete roads. C. Dirt roads. D. Stone roads.
2. What new building is NOT mentioned in the passage
A. A supermarket. B. A school. C. A library. D. A hospital.
3. What happened to the river near the village
A. It became wider. B. It was cleaned up. C. It was filled with rubbish. D. It dried up.
4. What do the old people still do in the village
A. Go fishing by the river. B. Play hide-and-seek with children. C. Sit under the big tree and chat. D. Shop in the supermarket.
5. Which of the following is TRUE about the village now
A. People have to walk to the town to buy things. B. The air is not as fresh as before. C. Some traditional things remain. D. There are no trees around the village.
(C)
When I was a child in the 1990s, we didn’t have smartphones or computers. Instead, we played traditional games with our friends outside. These games were simple but fun, and they gave us many happy memories.
One of my favorite games was “hopscotch”. We drew squares on the ground with chalk, and then we threw a small stone into one of the squares. We had to hop on one foot to the square, pick up the stone, and hop back without stepping on the lines. It was easy to learn but hard to master.
Another popular game was “hide-and-seek”. One person would close their eyes and count to 10, while the others hid. The person who was “it” had to find everyone. We often hid in the bushes, behind trees, or even in old houses. It was exciting when we found a good hiding place and didn’t get caught.
We also played “skipping rope”. We would take turns skipping alone or in groups. Sometimes we sang songs while we skipped. It was a great way to exercise and have fun at the same time.
Now, children spend more time looking at screens than playing outside. I hope these traditional games don’t disappear. They are an important part of our childhood and our culture.
1. What did children in the 1990s play instead of smartphones
A. Traditional outdoor games. B. Computer games. C. Indoor board games. D. Video games.
2. Which game involved drawing squares on the ground
A. Hide-and-seek. B. Hopscotch. C. Skipping rope. D. None of the above.
3. What did the children do in hide-and-seek
A. Hop on one foot. B. Skip rope and sing songs. C. Hide while someone counted. D. Throw a stone into squares.
4. Why does the writer hope traditional games don’t disappear
A. Because they are easy to learn. B. Because they are part of childhood and culture. C. Because they are more exciting than screen games. D. Because they help children exercise.
5. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The writer’s favorite childhood games. B. How to play traditional games. C. The difference between past and present games. D. The importance of traditional games.

A Special Old Object
My special old object is a blue pencil box. My dad gave it to me on my first day of primary school. It has a picture of a little rabbit on the cover.
I used this pencil box every day for six years. It held all my pencils, erasers, and rulers. When I felt nervous before exams, looking at the rabbit made me calm down. Now, I’m in junior high school, but I still keep it on my desk.
It’s not just a pencil box. It reminds me of my dad’s love and my happy primary school days. I will never throw it away.
