Liu Cixin, 57, is China’s most famous science fiction writer. His great work has earned the praise of Barack Obama and Mark Zuckerberg. He says that he writes science fiction because he enjoys imagining a world beyond the “narrow” one we live in. “For me, the essence of science fiction is using my imagination to fill in the gaps of my dreams,” says Liu.
Liu’s strong interest in outer space began in childhood. At first, he hoped to explore it as an astronaut or astronomer, but he settled for reading and writing about it instead. Early exposure to books by Jules Verne, H.G. Wells and Arthur C. Clarke fired Liu’s imagination and motivated him to write.
In 2015, he became the first Asian writer to win the Hugo Award, the most prestigious (有声望的) international science fiction prize. A 2019 adaptation of his short story The Wandering Earth became China’s third highest-grossing film of all time, and a TV version of his bestselling novel The Three-Body Problem has also been released. His latest book, To Hold Up the Sky, a collection of stories, was published in the U.S. in October 2020.
Liu hopes his books give readers a sense of perspective. “Our reality is narrow, confined, and brief,” he says. “Whatever we think is important right now, in our ordinary lives, will no longer be important against a grander sense of time and space.” His goal is to inspire more people to take a moment to look up at the sky and cast their eyes at what’s beyond. The idea that someone might gaze at the stars because of his work is, he says, “the definition of success.”
4. What inspired Liu to create science fiction
A. The works of famous writers.
B. The failure to be an astronaut.
C. The discoveries of astronomers.
D. The contact with great scientists.
5. What does the third paragraph mainly talk about
A. The origin of the Hugo Award.
B. People’s views on Liu’s books.
C. Liu’s outstanding achievements.
D. The brief history of science fiction.
6. What does Liu consider as success
A. He can receive some literary awards
B. He can be widely known to the public.
C. His work makes a difference to readers.
D. His books gain international recognition.
7. Which of the following can best describe Liu
A. A creative genius. B. A literary pioneer.
C. An all-round artist. D. An active innovator.

If you’re offered a-free cookie, you might say yes. But if you’re paid to eat a free cookie, would your response be the same You might politely refuse and walk away thinking, “Something smells fishy.” In a new study, researchers found that people tend to turn down offers of “free money” because they seem “too good to be true”.
In the initial experiment, nearly 40 percent of participants ate a cookie offered freely — compared with about 20 percent of those offered an additional $2. “People typically infer hidden costs from overly generous offers. In this case, the participants may think the cookies were poisoned,” says study lead author Andrew J. Vonasch. Further experiments, involving more than 4,000 participants, used online questionnaires to present common everyday scenes. In each case, past a certain threshold value (阈值), higher potential monetary gain at no cost reduced participants’ likelihood of accepting the offer.
Vonasch says the study illustrates that, against the “standard economic model”, which supposes humans always seek to maximize gains, deals need to be understood as social interactions between people trying to read each other’s minds. If someone seems to go against accepted norms without a solid reason, we assume they have hidden purposes and infer there will be “phantom costs (幻影成本)”.
The researchers also showed how to weaken phantom costs’ effect. In one experiment, participants were given three plane tickets for the same flight, respectively costing $235, $275, and $205. Most people chose the $205 ticket. However, if the third option was $15, hardly anyone chose the cheapest one. They rejected it because they imagined horrible phantom costs. However, when the researchers accounted for the incredibly cheap offer — very uncomfortable seats — most participants preferred the $15 flight.
The scientists are also about to experiment with human and artificial intelligence interactions. “Will people act the same way when AI is overly generous to them ” Vonasch says. “AI is always programmed to appear more human-like and people tend to treat AI agents as if they have a mind, when obviously they don’t.”
8. What does the underlined part “smells fishy” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Is worth studying. B. Is hard to realize.
C. Seems untrustworthy. D. Sounds very appealing.
9. Which of the following options will participants most possibly refuse
A. A travel package with a 50% discount. B. Being offered cash for taking a lift home.
C. A $100 reward for returning one’s lost phone. D. Being given a prize for accepting an interview.
10. What insight can businesses gain from the “cheap flight” experiment
A. Keep prices as low as possible. B. Offer customers a variety of options.
C. Give explanations for overgenerous offers. D. Adjust pricing following competitors.
11. What will the researchers investigate in further studies
A. How AI’s responses impact humans’ expectations.
B. How AI can be programmed to be more human-like.
C. Whether AI can give humans overly generous offers.
D. Whether we assume phantom costs in human-AI interactions.

For many years, pain assessment in medical settings has relied heavily on patients’ self-report or caregivers’ observation. Yet this approach is often unreliable, especially for individuals who cannot communicate clearly, such as people with dementia (痴呆). As a result, pain is frequently mistaken for behavioral problems, leading to inappropriate treatment while the real cause remains unaddressed.
In response, researchers have turned to new technologies to improve how pain is recognized. One example is PainChek, a smartphone-based application that analyzes facial expressions. It identifies small muscle movements associated with pain and combines them with observable signs such as sleep disturbance, providing a more consistent way to evaluate patients who cannot speak for themselves.
The effectiveness has been demonstrated in practice. At Orchard Care Homes in the United Kingdom, the introduction of PainChek led to noticeable changes. Staff reported fewer unnecessary medications and a calmer environment among residents. Some individuals who had kept to themselves due to untreated pain began to eat normally and engage with others again. “We immediately saw the benefits,” recalls Cheryl Baird, the facility’s former quality director, noting that the system revealed pain that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.
Even so, this approach is not without limits. Systems that rely on facial analysis may work less accurately across different groups or confuse pain with other emotions. There is also concern that overreliance on such tools could weaken clinical judgment rather than support it.
For this reason, technology is best seen not as a replacement, but as a support to human care. It can make hidden suffering more visible, but it cannot fully interpret it on its own. As Baird reflects from her own experience with long-lasting pain, having one’s pain acknowledged is often the first step toward healing. If tools like this can help give a clearer voice to those who cannot speak, their value may lie not in perfection, but in making care more attentive, more responsive, and ultimately more humane.
12. What is the problem with traditional pain assessment
A. It takes too much time to complete.
B. It often fails to identify pain accurately.
C. It overlooks patients with clear communication.
D. It depends too much on patients’ medical history.
13. Which of the following changes did PainChek bring to the care home
① Unnoticed pain was identified. ② Staff worked longer hours each day.
③ Unnecessary medication use dropped. ④ Residents became more socially active.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
14. Why does Baird mention her personal pain experience
A. To call for better staff training. B. To praise advanced technology.
C. To highlight accurate record-keeping. D. To stress the need for pain recognition.
15. What is the author’s view on new assessment tools
A. Effective but overused. B. Accurate but impersonal.
C. Useful despite its limitations. D. Reliable despite its high cost.
