Every fall, billions of birds set off on their long southward journey to overwintering regions. Their journey is extraordinarily dangerous and exhausting. They can be blown off course in bad weather or crash into tall buildings.
The incredible phenomenon of birds’ mass migration tends to escape our attention, as most migrating birds travel at night while we are sound asleep. This nighttime journey offers distinct advantages. They can rely on the stars as they find their way and use the cover of night to hide from natural enemies.
Increasingly, however, urban light pollution poses a threat to migrating birds, misleading their flying direction and causing crashes into buildings. As global light pollution worsens by about 10 percent each year, birds are facing a severe survival crisis. The 2025 American Birds report identified one-third of all native bird species as high or moderate concern.
Unlike other challenging conservation issues, light pollution is one we can all address easily in our own yards — simply by flipping a switch. Cities such as Flagstaff, Arizona, offer a model for communities looking to adopt policies that dramatically reduce artificial light pollution and preserve the night sky. By turning off unnecessary lights, directing light downward and using “warmer” colored lights, we can significantly reduce negative impacts on these migrating birds.
Thanks to weather radar and recent technological advancements, scientists can now track bird migrations in real time and forecast their routes in advance. Drawing on the released migration schedules and routes, each of us can do our part: switch off outdoor lights, gather to observe the night sky, document sightings in detail and upload them to eBird, a free citizen-science platform where your participatory information can aid global bird protection and scientific research.

Through evolution, animals have developed numerous ways to protect themselves from predators (捕食者). Turtles hide in their shells, and skunks (臭鼬) use smelly liquid. But these defenses don’t work against cars. Environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb explains, “When facing a car, these defenses are useless — or even harmful. Staying still is the worst choice. Roadkill is a serious threat to wildlife.”
Roads also act as barriers, preventing animals from moving freely. The constant traffic on highways creates what scientists call a “moving fence”— a wall of vehicles that animals avoid crossing. While we often see dead animals like deer or squirrels on roads, we don’t see the ones that never try to cross. This isolation can harm animal populations more than roadkill itself.
Chemicals from roads also damage the environment. Every year, the U. S. uses 20 million tons of road salt to melt ice, which pollutes nearby soil and plants. Cars release metals like zinc and copper, and tires leave behind microplastics. These pollutants make roadsides dangerous for creatures like monarch butterflies, even though these areas could otherwise be good habitats.
Roadsides sometimes attract animals with food like flowers or berries, but this becomes an “ecological trap”. Animals are drawn to these resources, only to face the danger of traffic.
Interestingly, when traffic decreases, animals quickly adapt. Researchers in the Bay Area found that when cars disappeared for months, white-crowned sparrows — small songbirds — started singing more complex and varied songs. Without traffic noise, they no longer needed to “shout” and could return to their natural behaviors. This shows how much roads affect wildlife — but also how adaptable animals can be.
Despite these challenges, Goldfarb says, certain species have made remarkable adaptations. He notes that Chicago’s urban foxes are said to look both ways before crossing the street. “We think about roads as these forces that are universally or exclusively harmful to animals, and certainly they’re incredibly destructive,” he says. “But wildlife is also impressively adaptive and clever and animals are finding ways to make a living in our midst.”

Each year an estimated one billion birds die from crashing into windows, and countless more exhaust themselves trying to make their way through artificially lit spaces. It’s a crisis for migratory species that are already facing sharp population declines because of climate change, habitat loss and pesticide (杀虫剂) exposure.
Migratory birds often move at night, when they find their way using specialized cells that can sense Earth’s magnetic field (磁场) and take visual clues from the faint light of the moon and stars. Artificial lights disturb this carefully tuned internal compass, throwing birds off their path and even trapping them in bright light.
“Unlike a lot of these huge sources of deaths — like changing climates — that individuals can’t influence as much as we’d like to, we can truly help with the overnight lighting problem,” says S. K. Winnicki, an evolutionary ecologist.
The number of migratory birds overhead varies according to weather conditions and the location along the flyway. But generally, the number of migratory birds reaches its peak between two and four hours after sunset in the spring and fall. During these times, the easiest way to help birds is to turn off unneeded lights at night and to close curtains or blinds. For birds that don’t make it out of cities before the end of the night, one of the biggest dangers is crashing into glass while looking for a green space to rest.
To help migratory birds in the daytime, experts suggest adding markers that will make the glass more visible to fast-moving birds. These markers could be as simple as a pattern of dots on the outside of the window or as complex as UV coatings (紫外涂层) that birds can see but humans can’t.
“It’s tough to be a bird,” says Dustin Partridge, senior director at the nonprofit NYC Bird Alliance. “We’ve built up cities in their path, and this presents risks, but those issues are things that can be easily fixed.”
