No matter where you go around the world, everybody loves to celebrate. And when it comes to celebration, festivals offer something for everyone. Here’s a look at our list picks for the biggest and best festivals in the world.
LA TOMATINA (VALENCIA, SPAIN)
Started in 1945, La Tomatina is one of the oldest festivals on our list. It’s also easily the messiest, coming off like the world’s biggest food fight. If you go, please follow some simple rules: Don’t throw hard objects; squash (压扁) the tomato before throwing it; stay a safe distance away from tomato trucks. In other words, have fun, but don’t hurt anybody.
DIA DE LOS MUERTOS (MEXICO)
Although Cinco de Mayo may be more well-known in the US, this is arguably Mexico’s most important and widely celebrated holiday. More commonly known in English-speaking countries as the Day of the Dead, the festivities begin on October 31 and last through November 2. The holiday is all about getting together with friends and family to remember and celebrate ancestors (祖先) who have died in order to help them on their spiritual journey.
KING’S DAY (NETHERLANDS)
Queen’s Day was a national holiday (celebrated on April 30 until 2013) commemorating (纪念) Queen Beatrix’s birth. By having the festivities in pleasant April, the proud Dutch could dress up in bright orange and have a few drinks without worrying about the weather. With the crowning (加冕) of her son, the holiday became known as King’s Day. It is now officially celebrated on April 27 (the King’s birthday).
WOMAD (WILTSHIRE, ENGLAND)
One of my favourite music festivals I’ve attended, WOMAD (World Of Music, Arts & Dance) was founded in 1980. More than any other music festival, WOMAD has always been a celebration of global culture first and foremost. They offer workshops for both children and adults. They also feature lots of international dishes, including traditional dishes cooked by the musicians themselves.

I remember that it was a fall morning when the orchestra (管弦乐队) teachers came into Miss Newell’s third-grade classroom. “You have hands for the viola (中提琴),” Miss Ciano told me. I was confused but excited because my hands were finally good for something. I told my parents I wanted to play, and naturally, they agreed.
Since I first touched the viola, I haven’t been able to put it down. Ignoring the difficulty, I am pulled closer to it each day.
Classical music is truly my best friend. It is the trusted friend of every man, woman and child. Various feelings are expressed in classical music. I discovered that when I was eleven and played a cello concerto (大提琴协奏曲) of Bach in a competition, the first movement was joyful, but the second movement was mysterious and full of pain. From the piece, I learned that music expresses not only feelings, but also sudden mood changes. By listening to classical music, I know that someone else shares these feelings. Since I am lucky enough to be able to play classical music, I am comforted by it when I am upset. It gives me a way to escape from my problems for a short period. Classical music can express my joy, sadness and anger.
Now look back at that fall day in the third grade and think how gullible I was for believing that anyone, even music teachers, could tell whether hands were perfect for a certain instrument. I’m certain they told me I had “viola hands” not because they were fortune-tellers, but because there was a lack of violists in our district. Classical music is one of the best things that ever happened to mankind. If you get introduced to it in the right way, it will become your friend for life.

Discoveries at the famous Sanxingdui ruins in Southwest China show that the region’s ancient Shu Kingdom Civilization shared similarities with the Maya.
The Sanxingdui ruins, located in the city of Guanghan, about 60 kilometers from Chengdu, belonged to the Shu Kingdom that existed at least 4,800 years ago and lasted more than 2,000 years, while the Mayan civilization built its city states around 200 AD.
The bronze-made remains of trees unearthed at the ruins of the Shu Kingdom resemble the sacred ceiba tree, which symbolied the union of heaven, earth and the underworld In the Mayan civilization. “They are very important similarities,” says Santos, a Mexican archaeologist, stressing that “the representations of tees in both cultures provide a symbolism that is very similar”.
One notable feature of the recent discoveries at Sanxingdui was the cross-subject work and technology applied by teams of Chinese archaeologists, which allowed the unearthing of artifacts as fragile as silk remains, which other types of less careful digging methods would not have been able to manage.
Cooperation between Chinese and Mexican archaeologists could benefit projects in the Maya world, where the rainy climate and humidity are problematic for the conservation of ruins.
“Every time our cultural knowledge increases, regardless of whether we speak one language or another, what it shows us is that we continue to be sister cultures and, therefore, the exchange of such knowledge is fundamental,” says Santos.

“If you don’t behave，I’ll call the police” is a lie that parents generally use to get their young children to behave. Parents’ lies work in the short terns，but a new study led by NTU Singapore suggests that they’re associated with harmful effects when the child becomes an adult.
The research team asked 379 Singaporean young adults whether their parents lied to them when they were children，how much they lie to their parents now，and how well they adjust to adulthood challenges. Adults who reported being lied to more as children were more likely to report deceiving their parents in their adulthood. They also said they faced greater difficulty in meeting psychological and social challenges.
Lead author Assistant Professor Setoh Peipei from NTU Singapore’s School of Social Sciences said，“Parenting by lying can seem to save time especially when the real reasons behind why parents want children to do something is complicated to explain. When parents tell children that ‘honesty is the best policy’, but display dishonesty by lying, such behaviour can send conflicting messages to their children. Parents’ dishonesty may eventually break trust and promote dishonesty in children. Our research suggests that parenting by lying is a practice that has bad consequences for children when they grow up. Parents should be aware of this and consider alternatives to lying, such as acknowledging children’s feelings, giving information so children know what to expect, offering choices and problem-solving together, to help children develop good behaviour.”
The analysis found that parenting by lying could place children at a greater risk of developing problems that the society disapproves, such as aggression and rule-breaking behaviour. Some limitations of the study include relying on what young adults report about their past experience of parents’ lying. “Future research can explore using more information providers, such as parents, to report on the same topic,” suggested Asst Prof Setoh.
