Workshop requirements
Our sessions that involve teaching with PowerPoint require an audio-visual-equipped teaching room. If you are booking calligraphy sessions, which is considered quite difficult to learn, we ask that one single space is provided for the day, as the setup can take quite a lot of time.
Our dance workshops are best held in a large indoor space with audio equipment available to play the accompanying music or outdoors if the weather permits.
Fees
The length of our workshop sessions ranges from 30 to 50 minutes with one teacher for up to 30 participants. We charge ?40 for each individual workshop session. If you’d like to have more than two workshop sessions, we would offer a 30 percent discount.

Every day as the sun rises, Ma Hongyi, a 66-year-old farmer, can be seen patrolling (巡逻) Yuncheng Salt Lake with his dog in Yuncheng city, North China’s Shanxi province.
Ma still remembers the day when he first saw two big pink birds wandering through the water. “I had never seen such pretty birds. They were even taller than me, with long wings,” Ma recalls. He was later told that the birds were flamingos, a rare sight in China, which were listed on the International Union for Protection of Nature’s red list of endangered species in 2013. From that day on, Ma started his second career as a volunteer to prevent human beings from interfering with the wildlife. “The birds are attracted by the good environment,” Ma says. “I will do my best to protect the lake so that birds can come here every year.”
Yuncheng Salt Lake covers an area of 132 square kilometers and used to serve as a salt production base. As the country began attaching greater importance to environmental protection, an ecological (生态的) protection and development center was set up in 2012 to carry out regular ecological protection and restoration (修复) of the lake. “The greatest value of the Salt Lake lies in its ecology, which should be properly restored and protected,” says Chu Xianghao, mayor of the city. The lake area hosts 292 types of wild animals, along with 782 plant varieties, some of which are newly recorded species in the country.
After patrolling the lake as volunteer for over four years, Ma was employed by the local government to help with wildlife protection in 2019. “The lake’s ecology is getting better,” Ma says, adding that he looks forward to the arrival of the flamingos every year. “Some of them are my old friends”, he says.

The Arctic trip with Quark Expeditions is an amazing experience, and I am thankful for it. However, it also makes me realize our presence here sounds pointless in this great setting, like we are visitors from another world.
Our 10-day journey explored the Svalbard islands in northern Norway. At our farthest point, the North Pole was still 600 miles away, but I had never been so far north. It felt like we were at the top of the world.
The story of humans in the Norwegian Arctic is all about looting (掠夺) the natural world for fur, coal and other resources (资源). The first recorded visit was by Dutch sailor Willem Barentsz in June l596, searching for a northeast path to China. History presenter Federico Gargiulo explained that this discovery put the Arctic on the map. That attracted people to come and try to take those resources.
Today, there are environmental controls on visiting this area. On our first day, we watched videos that laid down the law: Do not touch or take anything, and stay with your armed guide for protection from polar bears. We also washed our shoes and feet before boarding or leaving the ship to make the land free of pollution.
Tourists pay a lot and travel far to see Arctic wildlife. On our last night, we finally got a close-up of a polar bear. Everyone rushed to the decks (甲板) with cameras. We saw the bear swimming towards us, and as it got closer, we could make out its black eyes and rounded ears.
Quark Expeditions’ guides are experienced in different fields. I learned a lot from them The guide Austin Hart’s word’s impressed me: “It’s not much of a human planet. Dinosaurs were around for 180 million years. I don’t know if humans have that long.” As I stood among ice and snowy mountains, this made me feel unbelievably small.

Comfort food makes a person feel good. Food high in sugar or fat tends to improve moods by stimulating (刺激) the brain’s reward system. So it makes sense that many of us may turn to food for comfort in times of stress. There’s some fascinating research that examines food as a source of comfort. However, the most interesting thing about this research may be that foods are far less comforting than we tend to believe they are.
Traci Mann, a professor of psychology, and colleagues conducted a series of study with college students. The researchers examined how much comfort foods actually improve moods. They provided students with one of the three foods that they had indicated were their top personal comfort foods. After producing a negative mood by having them watch movie clips designed to increase their sadness, anger and anxiety, the researchers offered the students their comfort food.
They had to assess (评估) how they felt before and after they were supposedly comforted by ice cream, pizza or whatever they had indicated they typically ate to feel better. All of the students completed the study on two separate occasions: once when they were able to eat their comfort food and once when they were able to eat another food they liked, but they wouldn’t call it a comfort food. The researchers found that comfort food did improve students’ moods — but only by a little bit and not more than the other food they liked.
In another study, comfort food was compared to no food at all, and students’ moods seemed to improve even when they didn’t eat anything — most likely just due to the passage of time.
The take-home message from the studies While the comfort food may make the person feel better for the time being, it does little to deal with emotional problems. Of course, everyone can indulge (纵情) in a comfort food from time to time, but overall, aim for these instances (例子) to be the exception rather than the rule.

Getting to Know the Cultural Heritage Around Us
On January 13, 2025, an activity themed Getting to Know the Cultural Heritage Around Us was held at Haikou People’s Square.
Many local craftsmen showed traditional handicrafts and introduced their history. Visitors also watched folk performances and tried making heritage works by themselves.
