I’m Kay. I was the kind of child who couldn’t just accept that something worked. I would take apart everyday stuff, not to destroy it, but to understand why it worked the way it did. This desire to question, reimagine, and improve became the foundation of everything I’ve done since.
That same curiosity followed me into academia. During my PhD journey, I desired to strengthen medication adherence (遵循) among people living with serious infectious diseases (传染病) in developing countries. However, the challenge was contextual, cultural, psychological, and systemic. Contrary to the traditional approach of trying to fix the patient to improve adherence, I turned my attention to the communications that the patients were having with their healthcare providers.
That idea led me to motivational interviewing (MI), a person-centred technique based on open dialogue, understanding, and cooperation to drive behavioral change. On the surface, it seemed promising. But I quickly realized it wasn’t a plug-and-play solution. As I was working in a developing country with entirely different cultural dynamics, it became clear that ideas like personal choices and open emotional expression didn’t quite translate in the same way. Thus, I had to adapt the approach to fit the context and employ the adapted version to train doctors.
Essentially, I spent time understanding the local values, how people communicate, what trust looks like, and how authority was understood. I reworked the method — not to water it down, but to make it fit. The results were powerful. Patients became more involved, more confident, and surprisingly, the trained doctors started employing the approach in other clinical contexts such as patients with diabetes (糖尿病) and high blood pressure.
This was a defining moment. It showed me that true innovation isn’t just about invention — it’s about translation, adaptation, and understanding. It’s about meeting people where they are and helping them get to where they need to be.

The world is a noisy place, filled with various sounds that often make it hard to focus. With support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Mounya Elhilali is helping us listen more effectively — not just to conversations but also to the important sounds used to diagnose (诊断) disease and the signs that help people with hearing challenges move safely in their surroundings. Elhilali is leading efforts to make stethoscopes (听诊器) intelligent, improve speech recognition in noisy environments, and push the limits of how technology can improve our ability to understand what we hear.
In 2022, Elhilali, together with her colleagues, developed a smart digital stethoscope. “Traditional stethoscopes, while widely used, are often unreliable due to noise, the need for expert interpretation, and subjective variability,” she says. “Our research introduces new, advanced listening technology that combines artificial intelligence (AI) with new sensing materials to make diagnoses more reliable.”
This advanced stethoscope uses a special material that can be adjusted to reduce or block out some background noises, making lung sounds clearer. It also uses AI, including models of the airways and neural networks, to study breathing sounds. Elhilali and her team trained their algorithm (算法) on over 1,500 patients across Asia and Africa.
This technology is currently being used in clinical studies in Bangladesh, Malawi, South Africa, and Guatemala, as well as in the pediatric emergency room at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. A version of the device, now called Feelix, has received FDA approval and is being marketed by the Baltimore spinoff Sonavi Labs.
“This technology is already making a difference. It is being used in rural clinics, mobile health units, and large hospitals to assist emergency responders and health care providers around the world in providing time-saving, cost-effective pulmonary assessments (肺部评估), especially in areas with limited access to imaging tools like X-rays and ultrasounds,” Elhilali said.
