John has been a devoted hockey (冰球) enthusiast. In the past around two decades back, John, a part of the local junior league team, The Rapid, was an influential ice hockey competitor in his hometown, even with a considerable group of admirers. However, a knee injury in his teenage years ended his hopes of a career on the ice.
Years passed, and John grew into a successful businessman, but his love for hockey never disappeared. One day, he stumbled upon an opportunity to review his childhood passion. The Rapid was organizing a charity (慈善) game to raise money for the town’s youth sports program. John reached out to the team’s manager, Mr Smith, with a special request. He wanted to suit up and play as the goaltender (守门员) for one period of the game, just for the fun of it and to encourage the younger players. Mr Smith was delighted and quickly arranged for John to join the team for the day.
The news that John would take part in the game spread like wildfire in the town, and the stadium was packed with excited supporters. On the big day, John put on his old, a bit worn but still cherished hockey equipment (装备). He stepped onto the ice, feeling a rush of emotions that he hadn’t felt in decades. The crowd burst into cheers as he faced the first shot, and with each save, the energy grew. After the game, John surprised everyone by donating his game-worn equipment and a generous check to the local youth sports program. “I may not have been able to become a professional,” he said, “but I’m happy to give back and help these kids chase their dreams.”

An international group of electronic music composers is taking beats from the dance club to jungles and forests and back, all to help save nature's greatest singers. A Guide to the Birdsong of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean is a new album that includes the sounds of endangered birds. The album will come out next month, whose proceeds will go directly towards efforts to save birds.
The whole project was born out of this idea of trying to combine birdsong, electronic music and conservation. A Guide to the Birdsong of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean was organized by activist, music producer, Robin Perkins. He invited artists from each of the endangered birds 'homelands to build their own songs around the birds’ songs. There are contributions from ten artists in eight different countries.
First single Black Catbird was created by The Garifuna Collective, from Belize. Al Obando, guitarist and producer of the group, always took in national parks and viewed birds when on the road with the band. “There are no trails, and there are no signs there to tell you about what you reseeing,” Obando says. “So we're trying to do something for the birds and nature tourism.”
Another musician who responded to Robin's call is Tamara Montenegro, an artist from Nicaragua. She was shocked to hear of the serious situation of the Guardabarranco after being approached: “This beautiful creature I grew up adoring also faced the influence of the systematic human activities”. In response, she created a song inspired by this bird and the challenges it faces to live naturally.
The new album is the second edition, following on from A Guide to the Birdsong of South America, produced by Robin in 2015. That first album has raised, to date, over $15,000 benefitting conservation projects in South America. As with the first album, all of the money from the sales of the new album will support specific organizations, including Birds Caribbean.

Recently, 14-year-old Harini Logan won the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States. She correctly spelled 22 words during 90 seconds. Most Americans, however, would find it difficult to spell any of these words!
From an early age, native English speakers know there are clear differences between how words are pronounced and how they are spelled. But they do not know that the difference is unique to English among major languages. Languages like Italian or Finnish can be spelled more easily because each letter matches to one sound. Students studying these languages can have 90 percent reading accuracy (正确率) after the first year.
In English, many letters have two or more sounds. This is why even after years of learning, students of English are still far below Italian or Finnish students in reading accuracy.
English started as a Germanic language. It is most closely connected to German and Dutch, especially in grammar and basic vocabulary. During the Norman attack in the 12th century, Old English was spoken but French was used in government and legal documents. As a result, more French and Latin words entered the English language.
The printing machine was invented in the late 1400s. This helped to establish English spelling and strengthen the connection between how English is spoken and how it is written. The English of today is how the language was written at the time.
However, the spoken language started to change in the 1500s with the pronunciation of all long vowels (元音), especially in southern England. For example, the word “bite” was pronounced closer to “beet” in 1400, before changing through the years to its present sound. The effect was that the English language had old spellings, but new sounds.
English has 26 letters, but over 44 different sounds depending on the difference of spoken English. There are several sounds from only one letter. For example, the letter “C” can sound like an “S” as in “city. ” And it also sounds like a “K” as in “cat. ”
