“Same time next week ” Pete, a licensed counselor, asked a troubled teenage boy in his counseling (咨询)
office.
Pete counseled both teens and adults. The adults lived long enough to be motivated to change. But most of the
kids didn’t even want to be there. Many had rough home lives and unhealthy friendships. For them, the process of
change was very slow and scary. “Could a single hour a week in my office really make a difference ” he thought.
Recalling his first job in a Pennsylvania wilderness therapy (治疗) school, where at-risk teens gained inner
strength and built healthy bonds through month-long forest adventures, Pete conceived a creative solution: Montana’
s scenic outdoors might help teens grow. He then founded a nonprofit organization, Big Sky Youth Empowerment,
and launched fundraising campaigns with the support of local outdoor enthusiasts.
Pete organized the program into two parts. “Tuesdays after school, we’ll have workshops,” he told the first
five Big Sky participants — three boys and two girls. “On the weekends, we’ll head outside.” Pete designed
workshop sessions about goal setting, communication skills and emotional regulation. Then Saturdays, it was off to
the slopes for snowboarding lessons with donated equipment.
The program was a huge success. Encouraged, Pete expanded the workshops to include life skills like
financial literacy, cooking, resume writing and job interview experience and extended the fun to include rock
climbing and mountain biking.
Twenty-five years on, Big Sky Youth Empowerment has grown beyond Pete’s wildest dreams. More than 100

Across the planet, scientists are observing ecosystems lose the colours that once defined them. Coral reefs turn
white, forests fade to yellow-brown, and birds’ feathers dull. These changes may seem simply pretty, but colour is
far more than beauty, especially under heat and atmospheric stress. It’s a biological signal and an indicator of
ecosystem health.
One of the clearest examples comes from coral reefs. Their coexisting algae are responsible for their vivid
colors, but due to long-lasting heat stress, corals drive out these algae, turning them white. High temperatures
weaken corals and can cause massive death. When reefs lose colour they also lose function, becoming easier to
pick up disease and fail to provide shelter for fish.
On land, colour loss often begins with drought. Forests and grasslands are green because of chlorophyll (叶绿

素), which enables plants to capture carbon and regulate water and energy exchange. However, “heat and drought
raise the atmosphere’s ‘thirst’, forcing plants to close their stomata (气孔),” explains Terrer, an MIT ecologist.
“This shuts down photosynthesis (光合作用), chlorophyll breaks down, tree tops thin and forests lose their
greenness — an early warning of deeper ecological change.” Terrer notes that the Amazon’s carbon sink has
weakened in regions hit by repeated droughts and fires.
Colour changes occur in birds, whose feather carries plenty of information. “For birds, colour is a
communication system,” says Mary, who specialises in evolutionary biology. “They use it to attract mates, hide
from predators, deceive opponents and find food.” In some species, human-changed habitats appear to dull those
signals.
Yet these changes are not uniformly discouraging. Colour often returns when stress is reduced and ecosystems
are given time to recover. After California’s long droughts, many forests and grasslands have rapidly regained their
greenness following years with stronger rainfall. Even the dullest natural landscapes can brighten when pressure
eases.

shooting. This isn’t just a home gardening issue: commercial nurseries face the same problem. That’s why growers
have long searched for effective solutions. But could an old-school technique support our 2026 gardening

Chemical growth regulators are one answer, helping produce stronger plants. However, many substances aren’
t available to home gardeners. Fortunately, research has shown that mechanical stimulation — simply rubbing,
shaking or stroking seedlings — is also remarkably effective. This is all down to a principle: plants adjust their
growth patterns in response to forces such as touch, wind, rain or vibration, by growing thicker stems and overall
shorter, stronger plants. Although scientists are still unravelling exactly how plants sense and translate these
signals, numerous studies demonstrate mechanically stimulated seedlings are not only structurally stronger, but also
more resistant to threats like pests and drought.
This works for many common garden species like tomatoes and petunias. Experiments using fans, vibrating
benches or even a sheet of paper brushed across the leaves have shown these interventions can reduce excessive
stem stretching by 20% to 50%.
But here’s the best part: while commercial producers have been using machines to deliver physical stimulation
since the 1970s, it is easy to mimic at home. Trials have shown that gently stroking seedlings as little as 10 times,
just once a day, is enough to cause the effect. You can do this with an old envelope, a soft feather duster or even
your hands. Just 10 seconds a day pays off!
