We talked with June Galloway about her new book Get off on the Right Foot: Don’t Let the Wrong Gesture Ruin (破坏) Your Day.
Host: In your book, why are gestures (手势) so important
June: Well, gestures and other body language have different meanings in different places. What you consider friendly or polite could be thought to be impolite in another culture.
Host: Can greeting someone in the wrong way lead to misunderstanding
June: In some places, yes. A light handshake, which is usual in some countries, seems unfriendly to a North American.
Host: What other gestures can cause misunderstanding
June: Take the gesture “Come here” for example. In North America, people gesture with the palm up. But in southern Europe, that gesture means “goodbye”.
Host: There must be some gestures used everywhere, right Like the thumbs-up gesture for “great”
June: Sorry. That’s very rude in Australia and the Middle East. That is why it’s important to know about body language and cultural differences. I’ve described many of these cultural differences in my book, so my readers won’t get off on the wrong foot.

There has long been a discussion: Is it better to shower in the morning or at night Some say a morning shower helps wake you up, while others believe a night shower helps you relax. As a microbiologist, I have a clear answer.
Showering helps remove dirt, oil and sweat (汗). It keeps you clean and reduces body smell. Different from popular ideas, sweat itself has no smell. The bad smell comes from bacteria (细菌) on your skin when they feed on sweat.
Showering at night washes away sweat, oil and bacteria, so you leave less on your bed sheets. But you still sweat at night, feeding bacteria. You may wake up a little smelly, and sheets get dirty again. Bacteria on sheets can also return to your clean skin while you sleep. Besides, you lose dead skin cells (细胞) at night, and dust mites (尘螨) eat them and produce waste, which may cause health problems.
Morning showers wash off night sweat, dead cells and bacteria from sheets. They leave you cleaner when you put on fresh clothes and reduce sweat for bacteria. In this way, you stay clean and energetic longer during the day.
Shower time is a personal choice, but I care about bacteria—the fewer, the better. Remember to wash your sheets at least once a week, or the cleaning effect will be mostly lost.
33. What makes the body smell
A.The skin cells. B.The sweat. C.The dust mites. D.The bacteria.
34. What can we infer about showering at night from Paragraph 3
A.It might kill dust mites in the morning. B.It stops you from losing dead skin cells.
C.It makes you sweat less when you sleep. D.It helps keep bed sheets clean at the beginning.
35. What’s the best title of the passage
A.Hot or Cold: Secret of Taking Showers B.How Showers Keep People Healthy
C.Morning or Night: The Best Shower Time D.Why Showers Keep Your Body Clean
