A. cultivating B. delayers C. temptation D. effectively E. motivational F. energized G. scheduling H. favorable I. identify J. vision K. monitored
It is tempting, when your shiny New Year’s resolutions start to collapse, to tell yourself that self-control simply isn’t your strong point. “Oh well,” you might say, surrendering to the desire for a large glass of beer. “No willpower, that’s my problem.”
But, according to a body of scientific research, willpower is not a talent that a lucky few are born with. It is a skill to be practised. “Willpower is a dynamic fluctuation resource.” explains Frank Ryan, consultant clinical psychologist and author of Willpower for dummies. “Our level of willpower fluctuates according to our motivation in any given situation. Everybody can learn to use their willpower more ____21____.”
Even if you are not trying to turn over a new leaf for the new year, ____22____ willpower is a good idea, as the psychologist Walter Mischel demonstrated in the 1960s and 70s. In his famous study, a group of four-year-olds were offered the choice of one sweet treat now, or two if they could wait 15 minutes. Their performance was then ____23____ into adulthood. The “high ____24____ ” went on to achieve greater academic success, better health and lower divorce rates.
“To maximize our chances of sticking to resolutions,” Ryan says, “we should ____25____ our willpower profile. For example: some people are more impulsive than others. That does come down to personality.”
Introverts tend to get ____26____ by thoughts and ideas. So, if that’s you, you should find it easier to get motivated by an inner ____27____ than extroverts who get fired up by people and social approval. For introverts, ____28____ time to reflect on your progress, such as keeping a diary can be helpful. For extroverts, signing up for a group such as Parkrun or Weight Watchers where everyone has common goal can help you to strengthen your resolve, as can sharing even small progress with others.
“You need to learn the core skills to cope with triggers and cues that activate your reward-seeking response,” Ryan adds. “It’s about coping with ____29____ which often comes from the environment, the people, places or things that act as ____30____ magnets to challenge your willpower.” In other words, if you are trying to avoid cake, it is probably best to find a route home that serves the artisanal doughnuts.
四、完形填空
Many people learn at an early age to associate the color red with danger. So might it make sense to print medication ____31____ in red ink And since the color blue is known to call to mind the freedom of open skies, might it help artists to ____32____ in a studio painted in that color According to new research into how the brain reacts to ____33____, the answer to both of these questions is yes. The study revealed that the color red seems to improve a subject’s attention to ____34____, while blue appears to stimulate creativity—all without the subject realizing that his or her brain is being influenced.
“People are not ____35____ this effect at all,” marveled the study’s lead researcher Juliet Zhu, who studies the effects of environmental cues on behavior. To study the brain’s response to specific colors, Zhu’s team administered a series of ____36____ tests to college students. For most of the tests, the students were placed in front of a computer screen that was colored either red or blue.
The researchers found that when the screen was red, subjects performed better on detail-oriented tasks. In one test, ____37____, students were asked to memorize a list of words. Zhu found that students who studied the list displayed on a red screen were able to recall more words than students who studied the list on a ____38____ screen.
In other tests, creative abilities seemed to be ____39____ by looking at the color blue. For instance, the students were asked to brainstorm potential uses for bricks. Students sitting in front of blue screens tended to come up with ideas that were ____40____, such as “make a paperweight” and “build a pet scratching post.” Students sitting in front of a red screen, on the other hand, were more likely to list ____41____ uses for bricks, such as “build a house.”
Researchers concluded from the tests that seeing red causes people to take the extra time to think ____42____ when performing detail-oriented tasks, such as ____43____, proofreading— and, of course, reading those all-important warning labels. ____44____ most people learn early in their development that red signifies potential danger, Zhu said, seeing red perhaps helps people to slow down in order to perform at their best in a potentially risky situation. Seeing blue, on the other hand, produces images of the sky, freedom and peace. Perhaps these images, researchers supposed, ____45____ feelings. “It’s really this learned association with these colors that drives these different motivations,” Zhu said.
31. A.instructions B.symptoms C.warnings D.treatments
32. A.create B.relax C.decorate D.design
33. A.skies B.medication C.colors D.paint

The train was speeding onward and the plains of Texas were pouring eastward.
A newly married pair had boarded this coach at San Antonio. The man’s face was reddened from many days in the wind and sun, and a direct result of his new black clothes was that from time to time he looked down respectfully at his clothes. He sat with a hand on each knee, like a man waiting in a barber’s shop. The glance she devoted to other passengers were shy. The bride was not pretty. She wore a dress of blue cashmere. She continually twisted her head to regard her puff sleeves. They embarrassed her. The blushes (脸红)caused by the careless glances of some passengers as she had entered the car were strange to see.
They were evidently very happy. “Ever been in a parlor-car (特等火车)before ” he asked, smiling with delight.
“No,” she answered; “I never was. It’s fine, ain’t it ”
“Great! And then after a while we’ll go forward to the dinner. Fresh meal in the world. Charge a dollar. ”
“Oh, do they ” cried the bride. “Charge a dollar Why,that’s too much — for us — ain’t it, Jack ”
Later he explained to her about the trains. “You see, it’s a thousand miles from one end of Texas to the other; and this runs right across it, and never stops but four times.” He had the pride of an owner. He pointed out to her the dazzling fittings of the coach; and in truth her eyes opened wider and she watched the sea-green velvet(丝绒), the shining bronze, silver, and glass, the wood that glowed as darkly brilliant as the surface of a pool of oil. At one end a bronze statue held a support for a separated room, and on the ceiling were frescos(壁画)in olive and silver.
To the minds of the pair, their surroundings reflected the glory of their marriage that morning in San Antonio: this was the environment of their new estate; and the man’s face in particular shone with an elation (得意)that made him appear ridiculous to the Negro porter. This porter at times surveyed them with an amused and superior grin. On other occasions he bullied them with skill in ways that did not make it easy to them that they were being bullied. He oppressed them. But of this oppression they had small knowledge, and infrequently, a number of travelers covered them with stares of derisive (嘲讽的)enjoyment.
At last they went to the dining-car. Two rows of Negro waiters, in glowing white suits, surveyed their entrance with the interest. The pair fell to the seats of a waiter who happened to feel pleasure in steering them through their meal. He viewed them with the manner of a fatherly guide, his face radiant with kindness. The service, coupled with the ordinary deference(毕恭毕敬), was rare to them. And yet, as they returned to their coach, they showed in their faces a sense of escape.

Science advances fastest when data and conclusions are shared as quickly as possible. Yet it is common practice for medical researchers to conceal results for months or years until research is published in an academic journal. Even then, the data supporting a study are often not revealed.
The motive to withhold findings is powerful. Journal papers are the key measure of a scientist’s productivity. To win research money and get promoted, scientists need to increase an impressive list of publications. Yet the delays in spreading knowledge have the capacity to do real harm. Nor are elite journals the guardians of quality that they often claim to be. The number of papers so flawed that they need to be retracted has risen sharply in the past two decades. Studies in elite journals (such as Nature and Science) are no statistically stronger than those in lesser journals.
Science should not, and need not, be restrained by journal publication. Three sensible reforms would ensure that researchers’ results could be communicated to more people more quickly, without any decline in quality. Step one is for the organizations that finance research to demand that scientists put their academic papers, along with their experimental data, in publicly accessible “databases” before they are sent to a journal. That would allow other researchers to make use of the findings without delay. Those opposing such “preprints” argue that they allow work of poor quality to grow wildly because it has not yet been peer-reviewed. That may surprise physicists and mathematicians, who have been posting work to arXiv, a preprint database, for more than 25 years with no ill effects.
Step two is to improve the process of peer review itself. Journals currently administer a system of organizing anonymous peer reviewers to pass judgment on new research — a fact they use, in part, to justify their sky — high subscription prices. But this process tends to be abused. At its worst, groups of researchers are suspected of guaranteeing favorable reviews for each other’s work. Better that reviewers are named and that the reviews are published. The Gates foundation has announced its support for an online database where such open peer review of papers takes place. The database was launched last year by the Welcome Trust, meaning that the world’s two largest medical charities have thrown their weight behind it. Others should follow.
Finally, science needs to stop relying so much on journal publication as the only recognized qualification for researchers and the only path to career progression. Tools exist that report how often a preprint has been viewed, for example, or whether a clinical data set has been cited in guidelines for doctors. A handful of firms are using artificial intelligence to assess the scientific importance of research, disregarding how it has been spread. Such approaches need encouragement. Journals may lose out, but science itself will benefit.
53. The passage primarily argues ________.
A.why scientists should timely make public their information with other peers
B.how a reliable system that promotes fast sharing of academic outcomes can be established
C.how the scientific circle ensures the quality of those research papers published in journals
D.what the difference is between the studies posted to preprint databases and the elite journals
54. Which of the following is NOT the reason why scientists hold back their findings
A.They want to climb up the career ladders.
B.They want to show their capacity of yielding great researches.
C.They want to ensure the scientific validity before releasing them.
D.They want to get funded for their study.
55. What can help reduce academics’ dependence on journal publication
A.Using tools to report the frequency of a preprint being viewed.
B.Firms using advanced technology to produce research.
C.Citing doctors’ guideline in processing a clinical data.
D.Finding methods to assess the way those studies are shared or spread.
56. Which one of the following statements will the author most probably agree with
A.Full trust can be put in elite journals like Science and Nature.
B.The prospect of scientific journals undoubtedly outweighs that of science.
C.The popularity of preprint will inevitably bring about a careless academic world.
D.Organizations ought to employ an open measure to conduct the peer review.
六选四(Rhythm of Life)
Choosing the right time to sleep, the correct moment to make decisions the best hour to eat — and even go into hospital — could be your key to perfect health.
Centuries after man discovered the rhythms of the planets and the cycles of crops, scientists have learned that we too live by precise rhythms that govern everything from our basic bodily functions to mental skills. Man is a prisoner of time.
But it’s not just the experts who are switching on to the way our bodies work. ____57____ Prince Charles consults a chart which tells him when he will be at his peak on a physical, emotional and intellectual level. Boxer Frank Bruno is another who charts his bio-rhythms to plan for big fights.
____58____ Sleep, blood pressure, hormone levels and heartbeat all follow their own clocks which may bear only slight relation to our man-made 24-hour cycle. Research shows that in laboratory experiments when social signals and, most importantly, light indicators such as dawn are taken away, people lose touch with the 24-hour clock and sleeping patterns change. Temperature and heartbeat cycles lengthen and settle into “days” lasting about 25 hours.
In the real world, light and dark keep adjusting internal clock to the 24-hour day. But the best indicator of performance is body temperature. As it falls from a 10 pm. high of 37. 2C to a pre-dawn low of 36. 1C, mental functions fall too. ____59____
The most famous example is the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island in the US. The three operators in the control room worked alternating weeks of day, evening and night shifts. ____60____ Investigators believe this caused the workers to overlook a warning light and fail to close an open valve.
Finding the secret of what makes us tick has long fascinated scientists and work done over the last decade has yielded important clues. The aim is to help us become more efficient. There is already evidence suggesting that the time when medicine is given to patients affects how well it works.
A.The rhythm of life is a slight best.
B.Experts say every aspect of human bodies is influenced by daily rhythms.
C.Jenny Hope claims to have tested her body clocks to the limit.
D.This is a key reason why shift work can cause so many problems.
E.Many people study the state of their bio-rhythms before making their daily plan.
F.Such a dangerous combination never gave their bodies’ natural rhythms a chance to settle down.
六、概要写作
61. Directions:Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.
According to an official report on youth violence.“In our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence.”Given that this is the case, why aren’t students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems, drive cars, or stay physically fit
First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. It is reported that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult. For example, a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence.
If the conflict occurs, students can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution: stay calm.
Once the student feels calmer. He or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well. Rude words and accusations only add fuel to the emotional fire while soft words can put out the fire before it explodes out of control.
After that, they can use another key strategy for conflict resolution. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side: and the other person should listen without interrupting. Afterwards, the listener can ask non-threatening questions to clarify the speaker’s position. Then the two people should change roles.
Finally, students need to consider what they are hearing. An argument doesn’t mean trying to figure out the fault of the other person but means understanding what the real issue is. As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller.

八、书信写作范文
Dear Director,
I am Wang Hua, a resident of our community. I am writing to express my opinion on the plan to improve our neighbourhood. Among the three choices, I strongly recommend building a community reading room.
First of all, a reading room provides a quiet space for residents of all ages. Children can finish their homework there instead of playing games at home. The elderly can read newspapers and magazines to kill spare time. Besides, reading helps cultivate good habits and enrich people’s inner world. What’s more, it will bring neighbours closer, as reading-sharing activities can be held regularly in the room.
I sincerely hope my suggestion will be taken into consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Wang Hua
