A Bet with My Friend
As the exam day loomed closer，my mind was a chaotic mess． The bet with my friend about treating the one who got a better result to a meal kept echoing in my head． Driven by vanity，I yearned to win so badly that I could almost taste the victory． As the crucial exam，which would determine our academic progress for the semester，drew near，the atmosphere in the classroom was thick with tension． It was as if a heavy fog of anxiety had settled over every desk and chair．
My friend，sitting beside me，was fully absorbed in intense preparations． Every spare moment was seized to review piles of notes and textbooks． With a focused look，he flipped through pages quickly，his eyes scanning each line with precision． He scribbled down key points in a small notebook，underlined important concepts with a bright-colored pen，and repeatedly recited formulas in a low voice，as if trying to engrave them into his memory． His determination was evident，and he left no stone unturned in the pursuit of good grades．
In stark contrast，I sat there，twiddling my thumbs． Despite the approaching test，I couldn't bring myself to study seriously． Thoughts of winning the bet due to some stroke of luck occupied my mind． I had made a bet with another classmate that I could pass the exam without much study．
I watched my friend's frantic efforts with a mix of envy and complacency． I envied his self-discipline but also felt complacent，thinking that perhaps fate would smile upon me without much effort on my part．
The night before the exam，while my friend was engaged in a final review session，poring over his notes and doing last-minute calculations，I chose to idle away the time． I browsed through my phone aimlessly，scrolling through various social media feeds． I watched some mindless videos that offered momentary entertainment but no real value． I even took a long nap，all while convincing myself that I'd be able to win it． I naively believed that my natural intelligence would be enough to get me through the exam unscathed．

In my opinion, money should be viewed as a tool rather than an ultimate goal． We should use it wisely to enrich our lives and help others, rather than let it control us． Ultimately, a fulfilling life comes from experiences, love, and kindness, not just wealth．

As soon as the test papers were distributed, panic surged within me． The questions seemed daunting, and I struggled to recall the knowledge I should have learned． Glancing at my friend, I saw him confidently writing answers． Regret for my laziness set in, but I knew I had to make the best of it． With a deep breath, I focused on the paper, trying to piece together what I could． After the results were announced, I unsurprisingly didn't win the bet． But my friend, being the kind person he is, didn't gloat． Instead, he patted me on the back and said we should still go to the restaurant as planned．
Walking into the restaurant, I felt a sense of liberation． I sincerely congratulated my friend, saying, “You really nailed it! Your hard work paid off big time, and I'm so happy for you．” My friend smiled warmly and replied, “Thanks! But remember, this isn't about just winning a bet． Success comes from putting in the real effort． Next time, if you prepare like I did, I'm sure you'll get great results too．” His words were like a guiding light, and I knew I had a new resolution． From then on, I'd no longer rely on luck but working hard to earn my own victories． Over the delicious meal, we laughed and talked, and our friendship grew even stronger．
