Anyone who has felt that spark of joy when a favourite song comes on the radio at just the right moment—or wept along with a singer expressing heartache—will understand the emotional resonance (共鸣) of music. But now,a growing body of scientific evidence is actually demonstrating that music can be medicine, too.
In a review of 400 research papers looking into the neurochemistry of music,Daniel Levitin,a psychologist and neuroscientist in Montreal, found that playing and listening to music had clear mental and physical health benefits.
One 2007 study from a team of Spanish researchers found that listening to music before surgery had the same effect in reducing pre-operative anxiety as taking diazepam(安定)—an important finding,as anxiety before major surgery can affect post-operative pain and recovery time.Another Spanish study, conducted in 2018,found that patients participating in a music therapy(音乐疗法)programme experienced significant decreases in tiredness, anxiety and breathing difficulties,as well as an increase in feelings of well-being.
The Center for Music and Medicine in Baltimore is taking music into the “precision medicine”(精准医疗)field. The Center is the brainchild of Dr.Alexander Pantelyat, who specialises in movement disorders like Parkinson's disease.Applying this kind of treatment to movement disorders is relatively new; previously,it was mainly the field of cancer therapies.Pantelyat explains,“Amazingly there is an understanding in the field of music medicine that there can be tailored interventions by using music that a person actually likes, that speaks to them culturally, personally or autobiographically.”
Kerry Devlin, the Center's senior music therapist, says there can be folks experiencing intensive symptoms, like a decline in their ability to verbally communicate.Music, she notes, can sometimes help such patients find ways to respond again.“I've had the honour of making music with people and all of a sudden they're coming up with new words. It turns into this beautiful unexpected moment. It's a powerful thing to witness someone find themselves again for a moment, and a song is the vehicle for that shift.”

Modern research on body language—often called non-verbal behavior—began in the 1960s and 1970s with studies that aimed to demonstrate the universality (普遍性) of facial expressions of emotion. That work was inspired,in part,by Charles Darwin's study “The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals (1872)”. But it had received little attention for around a century, according to non-verbal communication expert David Matsumoto.
Then modern researchers examined how the brain reacts to facial expressions, and how babies copy facial and hand gestures. And scientists have also realized the complexity of body language.
Much research has suggested that body language is often hard to interpret,or understand. But for years some advisers and experts have been using their knowledge in many practical areas.
“I help people influence others and enhance the perceived trustworthiness and credibility (可靠性) of their message by refining their non-verbal communication,” said Mark Bowden. He is the author of Winning Body Language,a guide for readers including business people and famous people. He focuses on where a person faces their body and how much space they take up,as well as their gestures.
Some experts also say they can use those signals to interpret hidden emotions.Joe Navarro is the author of What Every Body Is Saying. It is a book about reading a person's mind from their non-verbal behavior. It's easy to spot a speaker's lip movements when he faces a question he doesn't like,Joe said.
While the work of these experts attracts large audiences, many scientists are unsure whether their methods are reliable.“Our facial expressions show certain types of emotional states,” Matsumoto said.So do some body movements.“But people do all kinds of things with their bodies,” he said.Your raised eyebrow could express doubt—but it might also signal discomfort or surprise. The same hand gesture could mean different things in different cultures,he said.
