Day 1
Protect Wild Animals
Wild animals are our good friends on Earth. But many kinds of wild animals are in great danger now. People cut down lots of forests to build houses and factories, so wild animals lose their homes. Some people kill wild animals for their fur or meat, and many baby animals can’t grow up safely. If we don’t take action soon, we will never see these lovely animals in the future.
Last month, our English teacher Ms. Wang told us to start a small animal protection group in our class. We discussed and made three simple rules for everyone to follow. First, we should never buy things made of wild animal fur, such as fur coats and animal tooth necklaces. Second, when we visit zoos, we can’t feed the animals with snacks or knock on the glass of animal houses. Third, if we see someone hurt wild animals outside, we need to call the animal protection hotline at once.
Last Saturday, our group went to the city zoo to hand out posters we drew by ourselves. On the posters, we drew pandas, tigers, elephants and koalas, with big words “Love Wild Animals, Protect Our Home”. Many visitors stopped to read our posters and took photos. An old man told us he would tell his grandchildren not to hurt small birds in the yard. A little girl said she would stop eating wild animal meat after seeing our pictures.
We also wrote a short English article about animal protection and posted it on our class WeChat group. Many parents left messages to praise us. One parent said he would take his child to watch animal protection videos every weekend.

When you hear a bird singing or a cat crying, do you know their feelings Do you know what they are saying Scientists are now learning how animals talk to others. It is very interesting!
A study in 2024 showed that dogs could tell their needs in a special way after learning. Scientists taught the dogs to use a word board. When the dogs used it, the board could make a sound, like “play”, “eat” or “outside”. At first, many people thought the dogs were just following the scientists’ orders. But the study found that dogs could even put some easy words together, like “play outside”, to show their needs.
________ In 2025, some scientists studied a kind of bonobo (倭黑猩猩). They are much like people. They make different sounds to send signals. For example, the loud and high sound means “Let’s do that.” The small and short sound means “Look at me.” When they put both sounds together, it means “Let’s do what I am doing”. Keeping a guide dog needs lots of love and hard work. When they are small baby dogs, kind volunteer (志愿者) families take them home and look after them for more than one year. During this time, the dogs learn easy rules and get used to living with people. Later, the special trainers teach them useful skills that blind people need most. For example, they learn to stop on busy streets, stay away from dangerous holes and find safe places on buses. Also, the teachers make sure these dogs can keep quiet when they see big noisy groups of people or hear sudden loud (大声的) noises.
Many blind people say guide dogs are not just animals. They are true friends that bring freedom and warmth. They could never go shopping or visit parks by themselves before, but now their guide dogs walk in front of them carefully. That’s why many blind people see their guide dogs as their families.

In a long-running race called a marathon (马拉松), there are some special runners called “rabbits”. They are not there to win, but to help other runners do their best.
There are about 10 to 15 “rabbits” in one race. Each rabbit leads one group and runs at the same speed (速度) so the group can finish at a good time. They usually carry a balloon with a time on it, like”3 hours”. This tells the runners in the group: “Follow me, and you will finish the race around this time!”
They help you keep the right speed. It is hard to know how fast to run in a long race. If you run too fast at the start, you may get tired too early. If you run too slowly, you can hardly finish on time. The rabbits know the best speed, so you can just follow them.
They also encourage you. Running a marathon is very tiring. When you want to give up, the rabbits will cheer (鼓劲) for you. And they share some simple running skills along the way to help you keep going. Many runners say they run better with a rabbit beside them.
All in all, it is not easy to be a rabbit. You must be a very good runner. But even more importantly, you must be able to run at the same speed from the start to the end. Only then can you really help other runners finish their race well.

However, as Green grew up, things changed. His wild nature began to show. He cried loudly at night and needed a large space to run. Li knew clearly that the city was not a good home for a wolf. To help him return to the wild, Li made a hard choice. She left her comfortable city life and moved to the grassland with Green.
For seven months, Li lived there and acted as Green’s teacher. She taught him how to catch small animals for food and how to live safely outside. Finally, a wild wolf family accepted Green. He became wild and free again. He was the first human-raised wolf to successfully go back to nature.
Green’s story has touched many people’s hearts. “I love him,” Li said, “so I must let him go. For a wolf, freedom is more important than a safe life in a small room.” From this experience, Li learned a great lesson: true love is not about keeping one under control, but giving freedom.

The red panda’s body is very interesting. They have thick, soft fur to keep warm in cold mountains. Their tails are not just for show—they use them to keep steady when climbing trees! They also have sharp claws (利爪) that help them climb up and down trees easily. And did you know that red pandas have a false thumb (伪拇指) It helps them hold onto bamboo (竹子), their favourite food.

At first, people only used hawthorns to make tanghulu. Now we can also see tanghulu with grapes, strawberries and oranges.

You must watch the fire well—too hot will burn the sugar, too cool can’t make hard sugar coats. When the sugar turns golden yellow, roll the fruit sticks in sugar quickly. At last, put the sticks on clean oil paper to cool down for ten minutes. The sugar coat will become crisp and sweet.

Doing exercise is also important. Running for a few minutes after school, playing basketball with friends, or even walking to school—all these can help us sleep better and feel less tired. It’s like charging our bodies with energy!
Sleeping enough is a secret to health. We need about 8 to 9 hours of sleep every night. Going to bed early and getting up on time makes us fresh in the morning. No more staying up late to play games—our bodies need rest to grow.
Smiling and staying happy is part of a healthy life too. Talk with family when we feel sad, and play with friends when we are bored. A happy heart helps us stay active.
