Yang Li, a native Miao woman passionate about embroidery, owns a folk culture products shop that sells Miao embroidery, batik cloth, and silver jewelry. At first, the small shop struggled as there were many similar products on the market. Yang realized the need for a unique brand to stand out from the competition. During a hike in Fanjing Mountain in July 2011, Yang accidentally cut her hand on a thorny leaf. This gave her an idea; “There are leaf-vein bookmarks and leaf-vein paintings. Why has nobody created leaf-vein embroidery yet ”
Obviously, the reason behind this is that embroidering on leaves requires delicate skills that few possess. Yang Li collected thousands of leaves from Fanjing Mountain and processed them by steaming, boiling, and tanning them to expose their veins. While the leaves become soft, they are also extremely fragile. The biggest challenge was improving the flexibility of the leaves. After consulting local expert Shen Min, she learned that soaking them in acidic water could make them tough enough for embroidery.
Through continuous learning and practice, she succeeded in creating her first piece of leaf-vein embroidery, which perfectly combines traditional embroidery patterns with the natural textures of the leaves. By adding traditional designs from the Miao, Tujia, and Dong ethnic groups, she produced art that exhibits a unique aesthetic appeal of traditional embroidery with contemporary craftsmanship. Yang notes that typically, only those with decades of embroidery experience can independently complete the entire leaf-embroidery process, which is fewer than 20 people in Tongren from 2011 to now.
Two years later, Yang opened an embroidery processing factory and offered jobs to more than 500 laid-off female workers, rural women, and people with disabilities. “Guizhou is a province with a large number of ethnic groups and has a long history of ethnic embroidery skills,” she says. “I will keep doing the leaf-vein embroidery for the rest of my life because it is meaningful.”

He writes about trees, ecosystems, roots and the many creatures who live in and among them in a fresh, lively way. He believes forests and trees make decisions about their survival, protect and look after their young.
For readers, some of this language is familiar, and some may know that this style has been a source of derision (嘲笑) in the past. However, it’s this down-to-earth, conversational style that makes the book come to life and makes complex science accessible. He explains processes, such as the way trees access and use sugars at different times of the year, in simple, everyday terms.
Wohlleben writes in a calm style, but he can’t hide his anger with the way people today — including many environmentalists — now “think of trees as little more than biological storage units for carbon dioxide either while they are alive or when they are dead”. This narrow perspective ignores the vast beneficial effects that forests generate for global temperature management. His claims and criticisms are backed by emerging science and new research, as well as practical observations of how the presence of forests changes the landscape nearby.

There are many things that are opposed by Robert F. Kennedy junior, America’s health secretary, and his supporters. One that really upsets them is seed oils. In their telling, the oils are “toxic”. Now some American fast-food chains have swapped the oils for other fats. Is the stuff as bad as they make out
Seed oils are extracted from corn, soyabean, sunflower and other seeds. Critics worry most about two things. The first is that harmful chemicals used in oil processing may end up in the finished product. The second is the oils’ content of omega-6 fatty acids. This type of fat, opponents claim, causes cancer, heart attacks and obesity. On both counts, the scientific evidence says otherwise.
A chief concern for seed-oil opponents is that linoleic acid (亚油酸) , the main omega-6 fat in seed oils, can turn into inflammatory (炎症的) compounds in the body. Yet it is also broken down into some anti-inflammatory compounds. That makes it hard to work out whether it is pro- or anti-inflammatory overall. In trials, increasing participants’ consumption of linoleic acid had no effect on inflammatory markers in their bodies. There are also clear benefits: seed oils are high in healthy polyunsaturated (多不饱和的) fats, meaning that choosing them over saturated fats like butter lowers cholesterol levels, which cuts the risk of heart attacks.
Long-term observational studies reach equally reassuring conclusions. A recent one found that those following diets high in vegetable oils lived longer, healthier lives than those whose diets were low in vegetable oils. An earlier study, published by the World Health Organisation, found that higher intake of omega-6 fats was linked with lower death rates.
In short, seed oils are unlikely to cause harm — in fact, they are probably good for you, especially if they are consumed in moderation and supplemented by other, healthy fats.
