Before then, the only transport links between Mombasa, Kenya’s main port, and Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, were rough roads and an old railway line built in 1901.

Yes, the China-Laos Railway (中老铁路). It connects Kunming to Vientiane. It has helped Laos become a land-linked country instead of a land-locked one. It brings tourists and trade.
I heard about the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway (雅万高铁) in Indonesia. It was also built with Chinese help. It makes travel between the two cities much faster.
