Like so many other ABCs (American-born Chinese) and younger first and second-generation Chinese immigrants (移民), sisters Sarah and Kaitlin Leung reached a point in their adult lives when they started to long for the Chinese food they’d grown up on, but found it really difficult to learn how to prepare it. There was such a “representation gap” as Sarah put it, in terms of what kinds of cuisines were noticeably featured in those early days of TV celebrity chefs and the newly emerging food blogosphere (博客圈).
As it turns out, though, the Leungs were uniquely positioned to do something about it. Bill, the father, had spent years cooking beef at his family’s Chinese American takeout restaurant. Judy, the mom, was born and raised in Shanghai and had deep knowledge about traditional Shanghainese cooking. Meanwhile, the two sisters had grown up in the New Jersey suburbs, eating their parents’ food, but also growing in America’s own food-obsessed culture.
So, in 2013, the Leungs started The Woks of Life. What distinguished their blog from others was that the intergenerational heritage of knowledge that the Leungs were so eager for was baked right into the concept — The four family members took turns posting recipes, each sharing their own favorites, tapping into their own areas of expert knowledge.
Kaitlin is proud that The Woks of Life follows along the line of pioneers — folks like Joyce Chen, Martin Yan and Ming Tsai, who first started to bring Chinese home cooking into the mainstream in the US. “We feel proud that we have made a meaningful mark over the past decade, showing that there’s a huge demand for these recipes,” she says. “It’s about representation, yes, but there’s also a huge demand. Asian Americans look to reconnect with the food of their heritage.”

When you see someone take that first sip of freshly made milk tea, their face looks like pure joy. Today, millions of people enjoy this experience. Across the world, customers stormed to their favorite spots to meet with friends and enjoy sips of these tasty drinks.
In the early 2000s, though, milk tea was just coming on the scene. The few brands that had successfully established themselves in the industry were dearly concerned: Would milk tea just be another fashion food Sure, people are enjoying it today, but would they still be in a year, or five years And with so much new excitement for this product, would people be able to tell various milk tea companies apart These are the questions that Serenitea a Manila-based milk tea company, faced in 2014. While successfully opening 60 stores, they found themselves in a strategic fog, which led them to research into the deep, unexplored psychology of milk tea.
Serenitea partnered with an agency, CIA Bootleg Manila (CBM) that specializes in digging into the deep consumer “why”. The agency conducted a series of intensive, psychological-based techniques in its market research. Specifically, they probed the consumers deeper, emotional connections to milk tea, including their earliest childhood memories of milk and tea.
What they found was that milk tea was a complex topic. Their research revealed that milk tea produced three consistent psychological responses. People connected to milk through the idea of nurturing (滋养): They fondly remembered their childhood and being cared for by their mothers. Next, consumers connected tea to its healing effects. They would recall receiving tea when they had stomachache or seeing their parents drinking herbal tea for health reasons. Lastly, they associated milk tea itself with teenage fun: a guilty pleasure of their youth.
They had uncovered the three psychological cornerstones (基石) of the milk tea experience: nurturing, healing, and teenage fun. This set of insights was crucial. By integrating them into the core of their brand strategy, they struck out an entirely new path.

Since time immemorial, people have been searching for the fountain of youth. Surprisingly, the dream of human immortality is, according to some scientists, not so far out of reach.
Professor Brian Cox, Google’s Ray Kurzweil, and Tesla head Elon Musk all agree on not only the possibility of human immortality but also that it is not too far away. The solution, they say, is something called the “technological singularity”.
The singularity is a combination of humankind with computers, namely uploading the contents of one’s brain onto a hard drive. In that way, a person’s consciousness can stay alive after a physical body gets worse. This is based on the idea that a human brain is simply a machine, and there is, according to Professor Cox, “no reason at all why we cannot simulate (模拟) human intelligence” using a computer.
Although Professor Cox did not say when the singularity would occur, Google’s Ray Kurzweil predicts that the singularity will happen as early as 2045. By 2100, he says, human body parts will be replaceable by machine parts. Further by uploading our brains onto a computer, we will be able to toy with it, and become “able to expand the scope of our intelligence a billion-fold (十亿倍)”.
Elon Musk agreed with the assessments of the other scientists, even going so far as saying that the chances that we are not in a computer simulation right now are “one in billions”.
Google is preparing for a future where you can download personalities onto robots. For example, you might be able to download onto your robot a celebrity personality, or the personality of your late grandmother.
The search engine giant filed a patent (专利) for this download process recently. So they definitely believe that the singularity is just around the corner. All you have to do is hold on until 2045, and soon you can effectively live in the cloud.

Our School Celebrated the 110th Anniversary of Its Founding
On December 7th, our school held the 110th anniversary celebrations on campus.
Many alumni, teachers and students took part in various activities. There was the school fair where we exchanged goods with love. Besides, we enjoyed the Youth Concert and the wonderful Evening Gala.
